Assisted reproductive technology use, embryo transfer practices, and birth outcomes after infertility insurance mandates: New Jersey and Connecticut.

OBJECTIVE: To explore whether recently enacted infertility mandates including coverage for assisted reproductive technology (ART) treatment in New Jersey (2001) and Connecticut (2005) increased ART use, improved embryo transfer practices, and decreased multiple birth rates. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study using data from the National ART Surveillance System. We explored trends in ART use, embryo transfer practices and birth outcomes, and compared changes in practices and outcomes during a 2-year period before and after passing the mandate between mandate and non-mandate states. SETTING: N

A population survey of smallpox knowledge, perceptions, and healthcare-seeking behavior surrounding the Iraq invasion--Connecticut 2002-03.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge and perceptions about smallpox would probably influence public behavior following an intentional smallpox release. We assessed public knowledge, perceptions, and related healthcare-seeking behavior in Connecticut during the period of heightened interest in smallpox preparedness surrounding the Iraq invasion. METHODS: Smallpox-related questions were added to Connecticut's Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey, an ongoing statewide adult population-based survey during December 2002-July 2003 and November-December 2003. RESULTS: Among 4,074 respondents, when as

Surgery for congenital heart disease in low-birth weight neonates: a comprehensive statewide Connecticut program to improve outcomes.

Low-birth weight (LBW) remains a significant risk factor in surgery for congenital heart disease (CHD). The timing of surgery and the choice of complete repair vs palliative measures are controversial issues. Delay of surgery to achieve weight gain may result in poorer outcomes. The results of a statewide, cardiac surgery protocol in LBW infants using specific selection criteria for repair vs palliation or delay over a 42-month period are reviewed. From September 1999 through February 2003, 32 low-birth weight infants (1,320 to 2,500 grams) underwent surgery for congenital heart disease in Con

Rocky mountain spotted fever in Connecticut: human cases, spotted-fever group rickettsiae in ticks, and antibodies in mammals.

Three parameters were used in 1976 and 1977 to assess the status of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) in Connecticut--compilation and review of clinical data on suspected human cases for the 13-year period 1965--1977, examination of tick tissues for spotted fever-group rickettsiae by the hemolymph test and direct immunofluorescence, and analyses of mammalian sera for antibodies against Rickettsia rickettsii. There were six presumptive RMSF cases which probably originated in Connecticut. Four of these cases occurred in areas where the American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis, abounds. A tota

Understanding Reasons to Quit or Reduce Vaping and Associations With Quitting Outcomes Among High School Adolescents in Connecticut.

PURPOSE: Understanding youth experiences quitting vaping is important for informing youth-focused e-cigarette cessation interventions to improve public health. This study aims to examine reasons for quitting/reducing vaping and associations with quitting outcomes. METHODS: We surveyed high school students in Connecticut in 2022 using a brief, anonymous online questionnaire assessing e-cigarette use. Adolescents (N = 756; mean age = 15.9, SD = 1.2) who reported lifetime e-cigarette use answered questions about previous experiences trying to quit or reduce vaping, including reasons for quitting

Receipt of opioid use disorder treatments prior to fatal overdoses and comparison to no treatment in Connecticut, 2016-17.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the relative risk of death following exposure to treatments for OUD compared to no treatment. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study we compiled and merged state agency data on accidental and undetermined opioid overdose deaths in 2017 and exposures to OUD treatment in the prior six months to determine incidence rates following exposure to different treatment modalities. These rates were compared to the estimated incidence among those exposed to no treatment to determine relative risk of death for each treatment exposure. RESULTS: Incidence rates for opioid poiso

Changes in the microbiology, epidemiology, and outcomes of candidemia in Connecticut: A comparison between two periods using statewide surveillance.

Using statewide surveillance, we describe candidemia in Connecticut during 1998-2000 and 2019. In 2019, candidemia was more frequently associated with community-onset and non-albicans Candida species and less frequently associated with central vascular catheters, recent surgery, and in-hospital mortality. Understanding changes in candidemia can optimize clinical management and prevention strategies.

Prevalence of Infection and Co-Infection and Presence of Rickettsial Endosymbionts in Ixodes Scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae) in Connecticut, USA.

Ixodes scapularis is currently known to transmit 7 pathogens responsible for Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, tick-borne relapsing fever, ehrlichiosis, and Powassan encephalitis. Ixodes scapularis can also be colonized by endosymbiotic bacteria including those in the genus of Rickettsia. We screened 459 I. scapularis ticks submitted to the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station Tick Testing Laboratory with the objectives to (1) examine differences in infection prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Babesia microti, and Borrelia miyamotoi, (2) evaluate whethe

Antibodies to spirochetes in white-tailed deer and prevalence of infected ticks from foci of Lyme disease in Connecticut.

White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) were examined for the tick, Ixodes dammini, and sera were analyzed for antibodies to spirochetes during 1982. Of the 323 animals inspected in four areas endemic for Lyme disease, 188 (58%) had adult ticks; parasitism ranged from 43% at Haddam to 82% at East Lyme. Direct and indirect fluorescent antibody tests detected spirochetes in 18 of 133 (14%) ticks. Indirect immunofluorescence tests revealed antibodies at titers of 1:64-1:4,096 to this bacterium in 93 (28%) of the 332 sera assayed. There is a close correlation among the distribution of spirochet

Control of immature Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae) on rodent reservoirs of Borrelia burgdorferi in a residential community of southeastern Connecticut.

A 3-yr community-based study was conducted on residential properties on Mason's Island, Mystic, CT, to determine the efficacy of a rodent-targeted acaricide (fipronil) to control immature Ixodes scapularis (Say) on Peromyscus leucopus. Results indicated that modified commercial bait boxes were effective as an acaricide delivery method for reducing nymphal and larval tick infestations on white-footed mice by 68 and 84%, respectively. Passive application of fipronil significantly reduced the infection rate of Borrelia burgdorferi among white-footed mice by 53%. Moreover, the abundance of questin

Investigation of the life cycle and adult morphology of the avian blood fluke Austrobilharzia variglandis (Trematoda: Schistosomatidae) from Connecticut.

This study was undertaken to expand the current knowledge of the life cycle and adult morphology of the avian schistosome Austrobilharzia variglandis, which causes a marine cercarial dermatitis in New England. The specific objectives were to: (1) investigate the seasonality of the infection in the molluscan intermediate host, Ilyanassa obsoleta; (2) determine which bird species are acting as natural definitive hosts for the parasite; and (3) characterize the morphology of the parasite using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). One-thousand individuals of I. obsoleta were collected each month fo

Measuring chronic liver disease mortality using an expanded cause of death definition and medical records in Connecticut, 2004.

AIM: Chronic liver disease (CLD) is a leading cause of death and is defined based on a specific set of underlying cause-of-death codes on death certificates. This conventional approach to measuring CLD mortality underestimates the true mortality burden because it does not consider certain CLD conditions like viral hepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma. We measured how much the conventional CLD mortality case definition will underestimate CLD mortality and described the distribution of CLD etiologies in Connecticut. METHODS: We used 2004 Connecticut death certificates to estimate CLD mortalit
