BACKGROUND: Women living with HIV (WLHIV) experience high rates of unmet contraceptive need and unintended pregnancy. Contraceptive method-specific continuation rates and associated factors are critical for guiding providers tasked with both reproductive health (RH) and HIV care. We conducted this systematic review to determine whether contraceptive continuation rates differ between WLHIV and uninfected women and, for WLHIV, whether differences are impacted by method type, antiretroviral therapy use or other factors.
METHODS: We searched Ovid MEDLINE, POPLINE and PubMed.gov for studies publis

Little is known about oncology provider recommendations regarding best practices in contraception use during cancer treatment and through survivorship for adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer patients. This review examined the literature to identify related studies on contraception recommendations, counseling discussions, and methods of contraception in the AYA oncology population. A literature review was conducted using PubMed, including all peer-reviewed journals with no publication date exclusions. A systematic review of the literature was conducted using combinations of the following ph

OBJECTIVE: Afghanistan is one of the countries with the highest prevalence of spousal violence (56%) and a low prevalence of contraceptive use (23%), yet there is no study assessing how spousal violence is related to contraceptive use, and what methods are most used by women. Therefore, this study examined the association between the number of types of spousal violence and contraceptive use.
METHOD: Using data from 18,985 Afghan married women, aged 15 to 49, who responded to the 2015 Afghanistan Demographic and Health Survey, the current contraceptive method was grouped into five categories:

In this paper I present data on risky sexual behavior and condom use among a sample of 100 adult women who attended a family planning clinic in an urban area of the United States. Although the women in this study protected themselves from pregnancy by using contraception, they engaged in sexual behaviors that put them at risk for sexually transmitted human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), including unprotected oral, anal, and vaginal intercourse, and sex with risky partners. Alcohol and drug use were also common among the women in this sample. Almost half of the participants reported a history of

The first visit for contraception essentially aims at listening and providing information and counseling. The choice of the contraceptive methods takes into account the contra-indications of the method as well as the patient personnel history, the type of demand, the needs and the fears. For young women, the most preferred choice is the combined pills, very effective and with minima sides effects but other methods (IUD, barrier methods) should be kept in mind. Observance requires proper information and reassurance on side effects particularly on menstruation disorders (amenorrhea, spotting) to

BACKGROUND: The contraceptive pill is widely used. An accurate knowledge is necessary for correct use.
OBJECTIVE: This study sheds light on adolescents' knowledge, attitude and behavior in regard to contraceptive use, in the year 2014. The goal is to provide general practitioners (GP) with information about the potential gaps in knowledge concerning contraceptive use in order to give better counseling and prevent high-risk behavior in adolescents.
METHODS: A quantitative descriptive study was carried out among 14-25-year-old female and male adolescents. Data were collected through a web-base

There is unmet contraceptive need among Haitian immigrants and Haitian-American women (Haitian women). The study explored associations of three measures of acculturation with contraceptive/reproductive health history among Haitian women residing in the Little Haiti community of Miami. This was a cross-sectional, exploratory study among 57 Haitian women. We conducted descriptive univariate analyses, then bivariate analyses to investigate the association of acculturation with reproductive health risk behavior including contraceptive use, tampon use, and parity, as well as interest in a female-in

INTRODUCTION: Almost half of all pregnancies in the United States are unintentional, unplanned, or mistimed. Most unplanned pregnancies result from inconsistent, incorrect, or nonuse of a contraceptive method. Diminished sexual function and pleasure may be a barrier to using hormonal contraception.
AIM: This study explores sexual function and behaviors of women in relation to the use of hormonal vs. nonhormonal methods of contraception.
METHODS: Data were collected as part of an online health and sexuality study of women.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Main outcomes variables assess frequencies in

BACKGROUND: Research has shown that mobile phone contraceptive behavioral interventions can increase knowledge and use of contraception, but other studies have failed to demonstrate a beneficial effect. The objective of this trial was to estimate the effect of a contraceptive behavioral intervention delivered by mobile phone text message on young Palestinian women's attitudes towards effective contraception.
METHODS: We conducted a randomized controlled trial among women aged 18-24 years living in the West Bank, who were not using an effective method of contraception. The intervention group r

It was proposed that the lack of insight into the risk-taking behavior of many sexually active women who do not want to get pregnant may reflect the lack of an adequate framework from which to investigate the problem. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between contraceptive effectiveness and several cognitive factors. The sample consisted of 155 single women, 15.3-25.7 years of age, from a Planned Parenthood clinic and an abortion clinic. Contraceptive effectiveness, operationally defined as the number of unplanned pregnancies in a woman's history, was significantly and

BACKGROUND: Contraception decision-making is a vital aspect of sexual and reproductive health, with individuals weighing various factors when choosing their current contraceptive methods. Method discontinuation is common and should not be viewed as an endpoint but rather as a starting point for selecting the next contraceptive option. However, there is a limited understanding of what former contraceptive pill users seek after discontinuation.
METHODS: This study examined the decision-making process and experiences of former oral contraceptive users (N = 19) who transitioned to alternative met

Contraception compliance is still an issue among teenagers, contributing in no lesser extent to high levels of adolescent pregnancies. This article reviews some of the factors that contribute to the inconsistency of contraceptive use and higher levels of noncompliance by adolescents, among them the impact of age, knowledge, and availability of contraceptive options. Attention is also paid to cultural and behavioral aspects, including the partner's attitude, professional attitudes, the user-provider relationship, and information. Some strategies aimed at enhancing compliance are discussed.

Implanon NXT was introduced in South Africa (SA) in 2014 to expand the contraceptive method mix. While studies have explored patterns of implant use, data on contraceptive choice following implant removal is limited. Here, we describe contraceptive choice among 120 women requesting Implanon NXT removal, between 2017 and 2018, at an urban reproductive health clinic in Durban, SA. Among women who used the implant for three years (n=91), >50% chose to reinsert Implanon NXT. Reasons for choosing to reinsert included satisfaction with the implant, the desire for a long-acting method and having had

Reproductive health disparities disproportionately affect adolescents of color in the United States, particularly in contraceptive access, utilization, and knowledge. Because parents strongly shape adolescents' contraceptive behaviors, understanding their perspectives is essential for addressing inequities. This scoping review synthesized evidence on parental attitudes toward adolescent contraception in racially and ethnically diverse communities to inform culturally responsive interventions. Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, seven databases were systematically searched for U.S.-based, peer rev

The study's objectives were to estimate the occurrence of bridging, that is, the degree to which women that had not been using contraceptive methods began to use them in the month following the use of emergency contraception, and to estimate the rates of contraceptive discontinuity before and after the use of emergency contraception. Data collection occurred through a retrospective daily history on the use of methods in the 30 days before and after the use of emergency contraception, with 2,051 users of primary health care units in São Paulo, Aracaju (Sergipe), and Cuiabá (Mato Grosso), Brazil

Recent data suggest increasing rates of emergency contraception (EC) use in Ghana, particularly in urban areas. In 2018, we collected survey data from 3,703 sexually experienced women aged 16-44 years living in low-income settlements of Accra. We estimated the prevalence of lifetime and current EC use. Multivariate logistic regression was used to assess factors associated with current use of EC. Retrospective monthly calendar data on contraceptive use were analyzed to identify patterns of EC use, including repeat and continuous use, and uptake of other contraceptive methods in the months follo

Self-concept and autonomy are typically negotiated during adolescence, a time when many females also become sexually active. Nonuse and discontinuation of contraceptives by teenagers place them at high risk for pregnancy. The present study explores the relationship between these psychological factors and contraceptive noncompliance during adolescence. Fifty-five adolescent females beginning a contraceptive regimen were entered into the study. Compliance at four months after the initiation of an oral contraceptive was associated with scoring high on the Behavior Subscale of the Piers-Harris Sel

INTRODUCTION: We conducted an assessment in Malawi, Nepal, Niger, and Uganda to document access-related reasons for not using contraceptive methods during the COVID-19 pandemic that led to unintended pregnancies, describe use of modern contraception among women in potential need of contraception compared to before the pandemic, examine method choice, and describe barriers to contraceptive access and use.
METHODS: Between December 2020 and May 2021, we conducted an opt-in phone survey with 21,692 women, followed by an outbound survey with 5,124 women who used modern nonpermanent contraceptive
