3-year-olds engage in joint action, but 5-year-olds engage in joint ideation.

Collaboration is a foundational element of human social behavior. This can mean joint action, such as hunting deer together, or building a barn together. But it can also mean 'joint ideation', where we collaborate on the creation of plans, beliefs, or theories - we may collaborate on a new plan for community governance, or on a theory about how planets orbit the sun. Here we compare three- and five-year olds' performance on collaborative tasks that required either joint action, or joint ideation. First, children had to play a game that required coordinated physical action while they could watc

The dynamic consequences of cooperation and competition in small-world networks.

We present a study of the social dynamics among cooperative and competitive actors interacting on a complex network that has a small-world topology. In this model, the state of each actor depends on its previous state in time, its inertia to change, and the influence of its neighboring actors. Using numerical simulations, we determine how the distribution of final states of the actors and measures of the distances between the values of the actors at local and global levels, depend on the number of cooperative to competitive actors and the connectivity of the actors in the network. We find that

Nepotistic cooperation in non-human primate groups.

Darwin was struck by the many similarities between humans and other primates and believed that these similarities were the product of common ancestry. He would be even more impressed by the similarities if he had known what we have learned about primates over the last 50 years. Genetic kinship has emerged as the primary organizing force in the evolution of primate social organization and the patterning of social behaviour in non-human primate groups. There are pronounced nepotistic biases across the primate order, from tiny grey mouse lemurs (Microcebus murinus) that forage alone at night but

The emotional foundations of human prosociality.

Humans are fundamentally cooperative beings whose survival and success depend on prosocial behavior, including with non-kin and strangers. Even young children engage in prosocial behaviors such as helping, sharing, and comforting that are often intrinsically motivated. While evolutionary accounts explain why prosociality emerged, they leave open the proximate question of what motivates individuals, including young children, to engage in costly actions that benefit others. This chapter argues that evolution has equipped humans with affective mechanisms that motivate us to initiate, sustain, and

Anthropogenic noise impairs cooperation in bottlenose dolphins.

Understanding the impact of human disturbance on wildlife populations is of societal importance,1 with anthropogenic noise known to impact a range of taxa, including mammals,2 birds,3 fish,4 and invertebrates.5 While animals are known to use acoustic and other behavioral mechanisms to compensate for increasing noise at the individual level, our understanding of how noise impacts social animals working together remains limited. Here, we investigated the effect of noise on coordination between two bottlenose dolphins performing a cooperative task. We previously demonstrated that the dolphin dyad

Co-production in mental health care, research, and education: A scoping review of barriers and facilitators.

Co-production, a collaborative approach where stakeholders or end users work as equal partners with professionals to design, deliver, and evaluate services or outcomes, is widely adopted in mental health research to promote more effective and inclusive service design. While often used interchangeably with terms like 'co-design' and 'co-creation,' these words actually denote collaborative practice, civic engagement, community involvement, and participation. This scoping review synthesises current research on the barriers and facilitators to applying a co-production approach in mental health, wi

Collaborative Wayfinding: A Critical Review.

Though people can navigate alone, collaborative wayfinding is ubiquitous in human life. Use of GPS devices does not inevitably make it easy to navigate together: conflict in collaborative wayfinding is familiar to most of us, as is failure at it. Yet we know little about how people find their way together. What mechanisms and conditions support effective group dynamics and performance? What difference does a shared history make in grounding communication and decision-making in wayfinding? Only in the last few years have these questions started to be addressed, but recent developments have come

Cooperative goals must be selected by groups before tinkering begins.

While the target paper's proposal dovetails nicely with prominent perspectives on cultural evolution, there are also substantial gaps. In the commentary, we will argue that the target paper's proposal does not adequately take the role of cooperative selection into account.

Exploration of the effects of bidirectional learning in medical education among global health partnerships: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: The flow of learners and healthcare professionals in Global Health remains primarily unilateral with a focus on sending individuals from high-resourced settings to resource-limited settings. There has been increased attention to promote parity in these partnerships through developing bidirectional exchanges where individuals experience the practice of medicine in other environments and are recognized as experts in their fields. This review is aimed at documenting (1) bidirectional initiatives within medical education, (2) integral features of these initiatives, (3) factors that con

Conflict and synergy in health promotion partnerships: a Danish case study.

Intersectoral partnerships constitute a central approach in health promotion. By combining different perspectives, knowledge and resources from different sectors, partnerships are important for addressing complex health problems. When successful, intersectoral partnerships create synergy, which is suggested to be a proximal outcome that links partnership functioning to health effects. Nonetheless, partnerships are also difficult and time-consuming and may result in conflicts, hostility and power struggles. Such antagonist outputs are expected to produce negative results. However, conflicts may

The Partnerships for Care Project in Massachusetts: Developing Partnerships and Data Systems to Increase Linkage and Engagement in Care for Individuals Living With HIV.

BACKGROUND: Before implementation of the Massachusetts Partnerships for Care (MA P4C) project, Massachusetts did not routinely provide HIV partner services to newly diagnosed individuals. Identification of individuals disengaged from HIV care and assistance for re-engagement relied on community- and clinic-based HIV medical case management services. Processes to identify individuals out of HIV care used either surveillance or clinic data, but did not combine both. METHODS: The Massachusetts Department of Public Health collaborated with 6 community health centers to implement HIV partner servi

Competitions between prosocial exclusions and punishments in finite populations.

Prosocial punishment has been proved to be a powerful mean to promote cooperation. Recent studies have found that social exclusion, which indeed can be regarded as a kind of punishment, can also support cooperation. However, if prosocial punishment and exclusion are both present, it is still unclear which strategy is more advantageous to curb free-riders. Here we first study the direct competition between different types of punishment and exclusion. We find that pool (peer) exclusion can always outperform pool (peer) punishment both in the optional and in the compulsory public goods game, no m

Inter-regional medical cooperation in the Caribbean : a major asset for the influence of the French medicine.

Martinique was accepted as an associate member by the Council of Ministers of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean State since February 2015. This membership constitutes a major asset in bringing Martiniquais closer to the other Caribbean populations and should play a key role as it relates to regional cooperation especially in the domain of healthcare. Martinique and several Caribbean countries share common health issues such as; dengue, chikungunya virus, Zika Virus leptospirosis, snakebite, severe cardiovascular diseases (CVD), HTLV-1, sickle cell diseases and so on. This medical cooperati

The unselfish gene.

For generations, we have operated on the assumption that human beings are fundamentally selfish, and so we have built systems and organizations around monetary incentives, rewards, and punishments. That hasn't always worked very well. Now the tide is starting to turn. In fields such as evolutionary biology, psychology, sociology, political science, and experimental economics, researchers are seeing evidence that human beings are more cooperative and behave far less selfishly than we have long assumed. The success achieved by such collaborative offerings as Wikipedia, Craigslist, Facebook, and

Bio-inspired indocyanine green supramolecular assemblies for high-contrast NIR-II imaging and cooperative dual-targeting of bladder cancer.

Developing supramolecular strategies that simultaneously regulate photophysical behavior and enable efficient biological targeting of indocyanine green (ICG) remains a major challenge for clinically compatible near-infrared region II (NIR-II) probes, as aggregation-caused quenching and ineffective tumor targeting severely limit their diagnostic potential. Here, inspired by natural light-harvesting complexes that utilize cooperative supramolecular interactions and spatial confinement to regulate chromophore behavior, we report a multi-interaction supramolecular engineering strategy to construct

Drug-biomolecule interactions: bioelectrometric study of the mechanism of carbachol interactions with the cornea and its relation to miotic activity.

The augmentation of carbachol miotic activity attributable to enhanced transcorneal absorption, which results from the action of cationic adjuvants included in ophthalmic vehicles, suggested a study of carbachol-corneal tissue interaction as a further step toward understanding the phenomenon. The present study was performed in vivo using an innocuous electrometric technique. A fixed charge density of the corneal epithelial surface versus carbachol concentration profile was obtained from the electrometric results; it revealed three distinct concentration regions defined by precipitous decreases

Joint evolution of multiple social traits: a kin selection analysis.

General models of the evolution of cooperation, altruism and other social behaviours have focused almost entirely on single traits, whereas it is clear that social traits commonly interact. We develop a general kin-selection framework for the evolution of social behaviours in multiple dimensions. We show that whenever there are interactions among social traits new behaviours can emerge that are not predicted by one-dimensional analyses. For example, a prohibitively costly cooperative trait can ultimately be favoured owing to initial evolution in other (cheaper) social traits that in turn chang
