In the marine environment, natural reef habitats are amongst the most threatened by human activities. Although reef-based ecotourism can benefit local economies, dive tourism can damage sensitive habitats. One solution to managing conflicts between the economic value of diving and its ecological threats is the deployment of artificial reefs near popular dive sites. We surveyed recreational divers to assess divers' use, preference, and perceptions of diving artificial versus natural sites. We found that more divers prefer to dive in natural than artificial habitats, with associated biodiversity

Coral disease is playing a significant role in structuring today's coral reef communities. While monitoring programs document declines associated with coral disease, there is a lack of tools that can test hypotheses of disease incidence and control. Here, we describe a modeling tool developed to test hypotheses about the spread and impact of white plague disease in diverse coral populations distributed across heterogeneous reef landscapes. The model Simulation of Infected Corals (SICO) was based on the dynamics of white plague over the course of 6 yr of monitoring on the fore-reefs of Little C

The Maldivian Archipelago is home to valuable coral reefs that have been extensively studied for their ecological diversity. However, the diversity of the microbiome in Maldivian corals remains largely unexplored. In this study, the microbiota compositions (including both algal endosymbionts and bacteria) were investigated for the first time across various coral morphotypes sampled in May 2022 from four Maldivian atolls (Ari, North Malé, South Malé, and Rasdhoo). Coral and gorgonian specimens were collected via scuba diving at reef sites located on both ocean-exposed reefs and lagoon sites, ac

Habitat selection can determine the distribution and performance of individuals if the precision with which sites are chosen corresponds with exposure to risks or resources. Contrastingly, facilitation can allow persistence of individuals arriving by chance and potentially maladapted to local abiotic conditions. For marine organisms, selection of a permanent attachment site at the end of their larval stage or the presence of a facilitator can be a critical determinant of recruitment success. In coral reef ecosystems, it is well known that settling planula larvae of reef-building corals use coa

We documented the prevalence of diseases, syndromes and partial mortality in colonies of the Montastraea annularis species complex on 3 reefs, and tested the assumption that a higher prevalence of these parameters occurs when reefs are closer to point-sources of pollution. One reef was isolated from the impact of local factors with the exception of fishing, 1 potentially influenced by local industrial pollutants, and 1 influenced by local urban pollution. Two reefs were surveyed in 1996 and again in 2001 and 1 in 1998 and again in 2001. In 2001, colonies on all reefs had a high prevalence of t

Coral reef aorta is described as rock-hard calcifications usually localized in the visceral part of the aorta. Rare cases of acquired coarctation of the descending aorta due to coral reefs have been mentioned in the literature. A more uncommon entity is the coral reef of the aortic arch. We are presenting a rare case of a 55-year old woman referred to our vascular department for bilateral lower limb claudication associated with resistant hypertension and anisotension. A thoracoabdominal computed tomography scan was subsequently performed and showed a preocclusive calcified lesion located at th

Recent in-situ observations within a tropical coral reef have revealed novel polygonal patterns of the calcifying green alga Halimeda. The observed patterns showed no evidence of a matching exogenous template in structural reef morphology, distribution of biological competitors for space, or other environmental factors, suggesting that pattern formation is consistent with endogenous, nonlinear dynamics. A simplified, spatially explicit numerical model is proposed that simulates a feedback whereby Halimeda preferentially grows in regions less conducive to the growth of corals (when corals are t

Ecosystem responses to disturbance depend on the nature of the perturbation and the ecological legacies left behind, making it critical to understand how climate-driven changes in disturbance regimes modify resilience properties of ecosystems. For coral reefs, recent increases in severe marine heat waves now co-occur with powerful storms, the historic agent of disturbance. While storms kill coral and remove their skeletons, heat waves bleach and kill corals but leave their skeletons intact. Here, we explored how the material legacy of dead coral skeletons modifies two key ecological processes

Corals in turbid environments may be more resilient to thermal stress than their clear-water counterparts, yet the physiological trade-offs affecting corals subject to multiple stressors are still poorly understood. During the summer of 2023, corals reefs in the Dampier Archipelago (Western Australia) experienced high temperatures and heat stress (>31.5 °C and 14.4 degree heating weeks), reduced pH (>0.1 unit decline), and a ∼30% increase in light attenuation, providing a natural laboratory to assess coral metabolic responses to multiple stressors. We determined photosynthesis, respiration, an

Remote reefs off southwest Puerto Rico have experienced recent losses in live coral cover of 30 to 80%, primarily due to the decline of Montastraea annularis and M. faveolata from disease and bleaching. These species were formerly the largest, oldest, and most abundant corals on these reefs, constituting over 65% of the living coral cover and 40 to 80% of the total number of colonies. From 1998 to 2001, outbreaks of yellow band disease (YBD) and white plague (WP) affected 30 to 60% of the M. annularis (complex) colonies. Disease prevalence declined beginning in 2002, and then increased immedia

Tropical reefs are in global decline with seaweeds commonly replacing corals. Negative associations between macroalgae and corals are well documented, but the mechanisms involved, the dynamics of the interactions, and variance in effects of different macroalgal-coral pairings are poorly investigated. We assessed the frequency, magnitude, and dynamics of macroalgal-coral competition involving allelopathic and non-allelopathic macroalgae on three, spatially grouped pairs of no-take Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and non-MPAs in Fiji. In non-MPAs, biomass of herbivorous fishes was 70-80% lower, ma

Reefs in the Northern Straits of Malacca are exposed to low-light conditions mainly due to sedimentation. Corals can be found in the urban reefs of Pulau Kendi (PK) and Pulau Songsong (PS) despite being exposed to low-light stress. Rapid Light Curve (RLC) measurements were performed in situ using a Diving Pulse Amplitude Modulated (PAM) fluorometer to investigate the photoacclimation of hard corals in the turbid waters of the non-protected reefs in PK and PS. The photosynthetic responses of corals suggested two distinct patterns of photoacclimation which are preferential dynamic non-photochemi

Marine anthropogenic eutrophication from nutrient and metal inputs has been linked to shifts in reef communities, benefitting fast-growing organisms that can outcompete corals. In 2015, the collapse of a mining dam in Brazil containing iron (Fe) waste reached the Southwestern Atlantic (SWA) Ocean and adjacent environments, but its effects on competitive interactions of corals are still unknown. We assessed the impacts of seawater enrichment with dissolved Fe on benthic competition with three reef-building corals (Siderastrea sp., Millepora alcicornis, Mussismilia harttii) against a common macr

Marine heatwaves in 2024 drove record-breaking sea surface temperatures (SSTs) across the Japanese coast, generating the highest Degree Heating Weeks (DHW), which quantifies the accumulation of thermal stress, observed in the past four decades. Here, we quantify thermal stress and coral bleaching responses across a latitudinal gradient spanning subtropical reef systems and non-reef temperate regions (24°-35°N). DHW exceeded 8 °C-weeks at all sites and reached extreme levels of 17-19 °C-weeks at high latitudes. This unprecedented heat stress triggered widespread mass coral bleaching across both

Allelopathy has been recently suggested as a mechanism by which macroalgae may outcompete corals in damaged reefs. Members of the brown algal genus Lobophora are commonly observed in close contact with scleractinian corals and have been considered responsible for negative effects of macroalgae to scleractinian corals. Recent field assays have suggested the potential role of chemical mediators in this interaction. We performed in situ bioassays testing the allelopathy of crude extracts and isolated compounds of several Lobophora species, naturally associated or not with corals, against four cor

On Caribbean coral reefs, losses of two key groups of grazers, herbivorous fishes and Diadema antillarum, coincided with dramatic increases in macroalgae, which have contributed to decreases in the resilience of these coral reefs and continued low coral cover. In some locations, herbivorous reef fishes and D. antillarum populations have begun to recover, and reductions in macroalgal cover and abundance have followed. Harder to determine, and perhaps more important, are the combined grazing effects of herbivorous fishes and D. antillarum on the structure of macroalgal communities. Surprisingly

Coral reefs are threatened throughout the world. A major factor contributing to their decline is outbreaks and propagation of coral diseases. Due to the complexity of coral-associated microbe communities, little is understood in terms of disease agents, hosts and vectors. It is known that compromised health in corals is correlated with shifts in bacterial assemblages colonizing coral mucus and tissue. However, general disease patterns remain, to a large extent, ambiguous as comparative studies over species, regions, or diseases are scarce. Here, we compare bacterial assemblages of samples from

Competition is an important determinant of assemblage structure and population regulation, often resulting in decreased growth, fecundity or survival. In corals, most studies testing for an effect of competition on demographic traits, such as growth, have been experimental and often impose very high levels of competition upon colonies. To more realistically assess the role of competition on coral traits, multispecies studies in the wild are required. Here, we use 5 yr of data that includes 11 coral species on the reef crest at Lizard Island on the Great Barrier Reef to quantify the effect of c

Geographic assessments of coral/octocoral diseases affecting major reef-building genera and abundant reef species are important to understand their local and geographic spatial-temporal variability and their impact. The status and spatial variability of major Caribbean coral/octocoral diseases affecting important reef-building coral (Montastraea, Diploria, Siderastrea, Stephanocoenia, Porites, and Agaricia) and common, widespread octocoral genera (Gorgonia and Pseudopterogorgia) was assessed along 4 permanent 10 x 2 m band-transects in each of 3 depth habitats (<4, 5-12 and >15 m) on 2 reefs i

Underwater survey was conducted to assess the accumulation and impact of marine debris in the reef areas of Gulf of Mannar in southeast India. A combination of roving diver technique and belt transect method was applied for the assessment, which was conducted during the period between February 2018 and March 2019. An estimated total reef area of 1152 m2 has been affected by marine debris. Abandoned fishing nets were found to constitute the major portion of 43.17 ± 5.48% of the marine debris. Live corals were found to be dominant substrates for marine debris with 39.11%. The average prevalence
