The therapeutic effect of wine-processed Corni Fructus on chronic renal failure in rats through the interference with the LPS/IL-1-mediated inhibition of RXR function.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Corni Fructus, derived from the fruit of Cornus officinalis Sieb. et Zucc, is a widely utilized traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) with established efficacy in the treatment of diverse chronic kidney diseases. Crude Corni Fructus (CCF) and wine-processed Corni Fructus (WCF) are the main processed forms of Corni Fructus. Generally, TCM is often used after processing (paozhi). Despite the extensive use of processed TCM, the underlying mechanisms of processing for most TCMs have been unclear so far. AIM OF THE STUDY: In this study, an integrated strategy combined

Ameliorative Effects of Loganin on Arthritis in Chondrocytes and Destabilization of the Medial Meniscus-Induced Animal Model.

Arthritis is a common inflammatory disease that causes pain, stiffness, and joint swelling. Here, we investigated the ameliorative effects of loganin on arthritis in vitro and in vivo. A single bioactive compound was fractionated and isolated from Cornus officinalis (CO) extract to screen for anti-arthritic effects. A single component, loganin, was identified as a candidate. The CO extract and loganin inhibited the expression of factors associated with cartilage degradation, such as cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), matrix metalloproteinase 3 (MMP-3), and matrix metalloproteinase 13 (MMP-13), in inter

Hippocampal neuronal degeneration in the traumatic brain injury mouse: non-trivial effect of scalp incision.

OBJECTIVES: In experimental models of traumatic brain injury (TBI), posttraumatic hippocampal neuronal degeneration in the cornu ammonis 1 (CA1), and/or the cornu ammonis 3 (CA3) regions are regarded as the most notable phenotypic appearances relating to the pathophysiology of human post-concussion syndrome. However, these morphological changes are often also seen in subjects without TBI, namely 'sham' groups. The frequencies and reasons of appearance of hippocampal neuronal degeneration in mice with TBI and/or sham are not clear. METHODS: We compared the frequencies of hippocampal neuronal d

Choriocarcinoma-Driven Uterine Perforation in a Bicornuate Anatomy: An Elusive Encounter.

Choriocarcinoma, an aggressive gestational trophoblastic disease, infrequently manifests with spontaneous uterine perforation. We report the case of a 22-year-old female with five months of amenorrhea presenting with acute abdominal pain. Ultrasound and MRI assessment highlighted a uterine perforation with choriocarcinoma. Subsequent total abdominal hysterectomy revealed choriocarcinoma in the bicornuate uterus with uterine perforation. Histopathological analysis confirmed the diagnosis of choriocarcinoma in the cornu of the uterus. Timely diagnosis is vital to reduce mortality. Notably, chori

Focal lesions of human hippocampal CA1 neurons in transient global amnesia impair place memory.

A critical role in place learning has been attributed to place cells within the cornu ammonis 1 (CA1) sector of the hippocampus in rodents. The role of CA1 cells in the human hippocampus with regard to place learning remains elusive. Using a virtual Morris water maze, we investigated patients with acute transient global amnesia (TGA), a rare self-limiting dysfunction of the hippocampal system. Fourteen individuals with selective and focal lesions in the CA1 sector of the hippocampus showed a profound impairment in place learning. The size of the lesions and the duration of the TGA correlated w

[Fallopian tube recanalization with a catheter system--experience in the use of a balloon catheter].

Fallopian tube obstruction is one of the most difficult problems in the treatment of infertility. This report gives the results of a pilot study on the transcervical recanalization of the occlusive fallopian tube. Selective catheterization of the uterine cornu was applied through a balloon catheter, which was wedged at the internal uterine os. In 16 occlusive fallopian tubes of 11 cases, the catheterization procedure was attempted and accomplished with a 87.5% success rate. Recanalization was successful in 75.0% of the affected tubes. Subsequent pregnancy was confirmed in three cases. This con

Effects of childhood adversity on the volumes of the amygdala subnuclei and hippocampal subfields in individuals with major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Reductions in total hippocampus volume have frequently been reported in MRI studies in major depressive disorder (MDD), but reports of differences in total amygdala volume have been inconsistent. Childhood maltreatment is an important risk factor for MDD in adulthood and may affect the volume of the hippocampus and amygdala. In the present study, we examined associations between the volumes of the amygdala subnuclei and hippocampal subfields and history of childhood maltreatment in participants with MDD. METHODS: We recruited 35 patients who met the DSM-IV criteria for MDD and 35

The Human Hippocampus in Parkinson's Disease: An Integrative Stereological and Proteomic Study.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a prevalent neurodegenerative disease that is pathologically described as a six-stage α-synucleinopathy. In stage 4, α-synuclein reaches the hippocampus, inducing cognitive deficits, from which it progresses to the isocortex, leading to dementia. Among hippocampal fields, cornu ammonis 2 is particularly affected by this α-synucleinopathy and critical for cognitive decline. Volumetric studies using magnetic resonance imaging have produced controversial results, with only some reporting volume loss, whereas stereological data obtained using nonspecific mar

Heritability of hippocampal subfield volumes using a twin and non-twin siblings design.

The hippocampus is composed of distinct subfields linked to diverse functions and disorders. The subfields can be mapped using high-resolution magnetic resonance images, and their volumes can potentially be used as quantitative phenotypes for genetic investigation of hippocampal function. We estimated the heritability of hippocampus subfield volumes of 465 subjects from the Human Connectome Project (twins and non-twin siblings) using two methods. The first used a univariate model to estimate heritability with and without adjustment for total brain volume (TBV) and ipsilateral hippocampal volum

Ablation of Type III Adenylyl Cyclase in Mice Causes Reduced Neuronal Activity, Altered Sleep Pattern, and Depression-like Phenotypes.

BACKGROUND: Although major depressive disorder (MDD) has low heritability, a genome-wide association study in humans has recently implicated type 3 adenylyl cyclase (AC3; ADCY3) in MDD. Moreover, the expression level of AC3 in blood has been considered as a MDD biomarker in humans. Nevertheless, there is a lack of supporting evidence from animal studies. METHODS: We employed multiple approaches to experimentally evaluate if AC3 is a contributing factor for major depression using mouse models lacking the Adcy3 gene. RESULTS: We found that conventional AC3 knockout (KO) mice exhibited phenotyp

Vitamin C deficiency in early postnatal life impairs spatial memory and reduces the number of hippocampal neurons in guinea pigs.

BACKGROUND: The neonatal brain is particularly vulnerable to imbalances in redox homeostasis because of rapid growth and immature antioxidant systems. Vitamin C has been shown to have a key function in the brain, and during states of deficiency it is able to retain higher concentrations of vitamin C than other organs. However, because neurons maintain one of the highest intracellular concentrations of vitamin C in the organism, the brain may still be more sensitive to deficiency despite these preventive measures. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to study the potential link between chronic vitamin

The Phospholipase D2 Knock Out Mouse Has Ectopic Purkinje Cells and Suffers from Early Adult-Onset Anosmia.

Phospholipase D2 (PLD2) is an enzyme that produces phosphatidic acid (PA), a lipid messenger molecule involved in a number of cellular events including, through its membrane curvature properties, endocytosis. The PLD2 knock out (PLD2KO) mouse has been previously reported to be protected from insult in a model of Alzheimer's disease. We have further analysed a PLD2KO mouse using mass spectrophotometry of its lipids and found significant differences in PA species throughout its brain. We have examined the expression pattern of PLD2 which allowed us to define which region of the brain to analyse

Hippocampal volume and shape in pure subcortical vascular dementia.

The purposes of the present study were to explore whether hippocampal atrophy exists in pure subcortical vascular dementia (SVaD) as defined by negative (11)C-Pittsburg compound-B (PiB(-)) positron emission tomography and to compare hippocampal volume and shape between PiB(-) SVaD and PiB positive (PiB(+)) Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia. Hippocampal volume and shape were compared among 40 patients with PiB(-) SVaD, 34 with PiB(+) AD, and 21 elderly with normal cognitive function (NC). The normalized hippocampal volume of PiB(-) SVaD was significantly smaller than NC but larger than that of

BIN1 deficiency enhances ULK3-dependent autophagic flux and reduces dendritic size in mouse hippocampal neurons.

Genome-wide association studies identified variants around the BIN1 (bridging integrator 1) gene locus as prominent risk factors for late-onset Alzheimer disease. In the present study, we decreased the expression of BIN1 in mouse hippocampal neurons to investigate its neuronal function. Bin1 knockdown via RNAi reduced the dendritic arbor size in primary cultured hippocampal neurons as well as in mature Cornu Ammonis 1 excitatory neurons. The AAV-mediated Bin1 RNAi knockdown also generated a significant regional volume loss around the injection sites at the organ level, as revealed by 7-Tesla s

Hippocampal α-synuclein pathology correlates with memory impairment in multiple system atrophy.

Recent post-mortem studies reported 22-37% of patients with multiple system atrophy can develop cognitive impairment. With the aim of identifying associations between cognitive impairment including memory impairment and α-synuclein pathology, 148 consecutive patients with pathologically proven multiple system atrophy were reviewed. Among them, 118 (79.7%) were reported to have had normal cognition in life, whereas the remaining 30 (20.3%) developed cognitive impairment. Twelve of them had pure frontal-subcortical dysfunction, defined as the presence of executive dysfunction, impaired processin

Anatomical studies in the hyoid region of the mouse in term of evolutional importance.

The mouse hyoid region was studied in detail in term of its evolutional importance. A pair of small pyramidal-shaped "epiphyseal cornua" wedged between the body and the caudal cornua. It is suggested that the epiphyseal cornu is an independent element of the hyoid bone, and that it is not homologous with the typical hypohyal in other mammals. Just ventral of the tympanic bulla, there was a stylohyal, on which the "paroccipito-styloideus" and "paroccipitostylohyoideus" muscles (appellations by the authors) were attached. Ossification of the hyoid bone began at the attachments of the hyoid muscl
