OBJECTIVE: The corpus callosum is the major commissural pathway connecting the hemispheres of the human brain. It is particularly important, because various tumors and vascular lesions can be located in and around the corpus callosum, and it is a route through which pass several surgical approaches. Performing accurate surgery in this region and avoiding damage to normal structures require that the neurosurgeon have adequate knowledge of the anatomy of the intricate blood supply to this area.
METHODS: In 20 cadaver brains, the arteries of the corpus callosum were examined under the operating

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine whether and how a true corpus callosum develops in milder cases of holoprosencephaly.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The MR scans of seven patients with holoprosencephaly and a callosum-like structure were reviewed. The anatomy of the callosum-like structure and the pericallosal anatomy were evaluated.
RESULTS: Six of the seven cases had a posterior corpus callosum. The seventh case was indeterminate because lack of myelination prevented confirmation that the callosum-like structure consisted only of white matter. In each case the posterior cor

Prenatal counselling for fetal agenesis of the corpus callosum is difficult as the prognosis until now has been so uncertain. We have reviewed the current world English literature to provide the best probabilistic information for prospective parents. In total, there are 70 cases where the diagnosis was made prenatally. The diagnosis of apparently isolated agenesis of the corpus callosum (in the absence of other sonographically detectable anomalies) appears to carry an excellent prognosis, with an 85 per cent chance of a normal developmental outcome and a 15 per cent risk of handicap. Fetal kar

The agenesis and lipoma of the corpus callosum is a very rare association. We report the case of a 18-years old woman with rare epileptic seizures since the age of 6 years, normal neurological examination, as well as normal electroencephalogram. The brain computed tomography scanning and the magnetic resonance showed the lipoma and the agenesis of the corpus callosum.

In a group of 66 patients (age 24 to 78 years) with the clinical diagnosis of chronic alcoholism the changes in the corpus callosum were evaluated. The period of alcohol abuse varied from 3 to over 30 years. In 57 cases atrophy of the corpus callosum was noted. The trunk was involved most frequently. Myelin sheaths exhibited abnormalities from slight pallor to total destruction. In 19 cases the damage of myelin sheaths was restricted to disseminated, perivascular, spongy degenerations. The vessels were sclerotic, especially periventricular ones exhibited degenerative changes. Perivascular glio

Agenesis of the corpus callosum is a cerebral malformation diagnosed by CT scan. Beside mental retardation, the most frequent clinical manifestation is epilepsy. In a personal study of 26 cases, the authors analysed the clinical features of epileptic seizures observed with this malformation. They put the stress on the paradoxical presence of generalized seizures.

The aim of this study was to investigate how the absence of the corpus callosum affects somesthetic sensation on the axial midline and in proximal and distal body regions. For this purpose, two-point discrimination ability was evaluated in four acallosal subjects, four callosotomized subjects, six IQ-matched subjects and 10 control subjects with average and above average IQ. Sensory thresholds were established in the distal (index, palm), proximal (forearm), cranio-axial (forehead) and axial (dorsal trunk) body regions. The threshold was defined as the smallest separation at which the two poin

MASA syndrome includes mental retardation, adducted thumbs, shuffling gait and aphasia or speech delay. MASA syndrome, X-linked hydrocephalus and X-linked spastic paraplegia have been linked to the same markers on Xq28 and perhaps represent variation in the clinical expression of the same gene or manifestations of different mutant alleles. The present family includes five males in two generations with borderline to mild mental retardation (5/5), speech delay (5/5), spastic paraplegia (5/5), adducted thumbs (2/5) and marked hydrocephalus (1/5). Of these males, four were evaluated by MRI or CT s

The CT findings in 32 cases of DCC are presented classifying them into three groups: Type I: Anatomical changes primarily due to callosal dysgenesis. Type II: Associated central nervous system anomalies. Type III: Incidental findings. The findings were compared with those of others. This study confirms that the CT findings which are of a high diagnostic index are those of Type I changes which include enlargement and elongation of the interventricular foramen, enlargement and continuity of the interhemispheric fissure with the third ventricle, which is invariably enlarged, elevation and anterio

The midsagittal area and other morphological measures were taken on the corpus callosum of four different species of primate: Macaca mulatta, M. fascicularis, Callithrix jacchus, and Saguinus oedipus. The first two species are strongly dimorphic, whereas the New World forms show little dimorphism with regard to overall body size, canines, and brain weight. Neither total corpus callosal area (TOTALCC), or other parts of the corpus callosum (CC) showed any significant sexual dimorphism in any of the primate species sampled. Only in M. mulatta did a sexual dimorphism appear to be significant. In

Recent illustrations by cerebral magnetic resonance imaging of anomalies of the corpus callosum in schizophrenics have kindled renewed interest in this association. We studied 62 patients affected by the Andermann syndrome, a polymalformative familial syndrome combining frequent congenital corpus callosum agenesis, mental retardation, psychotic episodes, peripheral neuropathy, and some dysmorphic features. Twenty of 62 patients presenting with psychosis were compared with 20 nonpsychotic patients matched according to sex and age. The psychotic patients presented an atypical psychosis as define

An 11-year-old female presented with the unusual coexistence of self-induced photogenic epilepsy and an atypical epileptiform ictal EEG pattern evoked by intermittent photic stimulation. The EEG showed irregular 2.5-4 Hz spike-wave and polyspike-wave complexes, strictly localized on the left hemisphere, and associated with impairment of consciousness and myoclonic jerking of the contralateral side of the body. A computer tomographic scan showed agenesis of the corpus callosum. According to the literature on corpus callosum section in uncontrolled epilepsies, we hypothesize that in our patient

A retrospective and prospective analysis of children with a diagnosis of complete absence of the corpus callosum (ACC) at the Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago over a 5-year period was performed. The diagnosis was based on the computed tomography (CT) and/or magnetic resonance (MR) images. From this material, 105 children with a diagnosis of ACC were analyzed on the basis of clinical symptomatology and radiological studies (CT, MR and ultrasound). Eighty-three percent of our children were symptomatic. The most common symptoms and signs were macrocephaly with hydrocephalus and seizures. M

We describe two cases of dysgenesis of the corpus callosum demonstrated by magnetic resonance. The first patient presented with chronic hyponatraemia. Investigation demonstrated re-setting of the osmoreceptor and thirst centres. The calculated threshold for arginine vasopressin (AVP) release was reduced at 252 mosmol/kg while severe thirst was perceived at a plasma osmolality of 260 mosmol/kg. Insulin-induced hypoglycaemia produced an exaggerated AVP response. The second patient presented with hypothermia. The calculated threshold of AVP release was 296 mosmol/kg with increased sensitivity of

The sentence comprehension skills of a 6-year-old girl with callosal agenesis were compared to skills of three other children matched for age and verbal IQ. Sentence-picture matching and acting out tasks were used with reversible active, passive, and center-embedded relative clause sentences. The acallosal subject showed a deficit in syntactic comprehension. The difficulty was due to a failure to assign correct semantic roles to some sentence forms, not to a lack of ability to discriminate among the sentence forms. The data are consistent with a previous report by M. Dennis (1977, In Topics in

Among adult BALB mice fewer than 20% usually have a small or absent corpus callosum (CC) and inheritance is polygenic. In the fetus at the time when the CC normally forms, however, almost all BALB mice show a distinct bulge in the interhemispheric fissure and grossly retarded commissure formation, and inheritance appears to result from two autosomal loci, provided the overall maturity of fetuses is equated. Most fetuses recover from the early defect when the CC axons manage to cross over the hippocampal commissure, and thus there is developmental compensation for a genetic defect rather than a
