A microRNA Approach to Discriminate Cortical Low Bone Turnover in Renal Osteodystrophy.

A main obstacle to diagnose and manage renal osteodystrophy (ROD) is the identification of intracortical bone turnover type (low, normal, high). The gold standard, tetracycline-labeled transiliac crest bone biopsy, is impractical to obtain in most patients. The Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes Guidelines recommend PTH and bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BSAP) for the diagnosis of turnover type. However, PTH and BSAP have insufficient diagnostic accuracy to differentiate low from non-low turnover and were validated for trabecular turnover. We hypothesized that four circulating micro

Gluteal muscles primary hydatid cyst after cortical bone destruction in the sacrum.

INTRODUCTION: Hydatid disease is caused by infection of Echinococcus Granulosus. Usually Hydatid Cysts occur in the liver and lungs. Presenting hydatid cysts in bone without hepatic affectation is rare and occurs in 0.5-2% of cases. Hence, this rare case makes the diagnosis difficult for the clinicians and, as a result, misdiagnosis of sacral Echinococcosis is common. PRESENTATION OF CASE: The authors report on a 47-year male with primary sacral hydatidosis and 34 years of recurrence. He was admitted with compressive neurological symptoms like tingling pain, numbness, sciatica and foot drop.

No Signature of Osteocytic Osteolysis in Cortical Bone from Lactating NMRI Mice.

The roles of osteocytes in bone homeostasis have garnered increasing attention since it has been realized that osteocytes communicate with other organs. It has long been debated whether and/or to which degree osteocytes can break down the bone matrix surrounding them in a process called osteocytic osteolysis. Osteocytic osteolysis has been indicated to be induced by a number of skeletal challenges including lactation in CD1 and C57BL/6 mice, whereas immobilization-induced osteocytic osteolysis is still a matter of controversy. Motivated by the wish to understand this process better, we studied

Cortical Bone Loss in a Spontaneous Murine Model of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.

Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by loss of T- and B-cell tolerance to autoantigens, are at increased risk for osteoporosis and fractures. Mice deficient in Fc gamma receptor IIb (FcγRIIB) exhibit spontaneous SLE and its restoration rescues the disease. To determine whether deleting FcγRIIB affects cortical bone mass and mechanical properties, we analyzed cortical bone phenotype of FcγRIIB knockouts at different ages. FACS analysis revealed that 6-month-old FcγRIIB-/- mice had increased B220lowCD138+ cells, markers of plasma cells,

Clinically relevant doses of vitamin A decrease cortical bone mass in mice.

Excess vitamin A has been associated with decreased cortical bone thickness and increased fracture risk. While most studies in rodents have employed high dosages of vitamin A for short periods of time, we investigated the bone phenotype in mice after longer exposure to more clinically relevant doses. For 1, 4 and 10 weeks, mice were fed a control diet (4.5 µg retinyl acetate/g chow), a diet modeled from the human upper tolerable limit (UTL; 20 µg retinyl acetate/g chow) and a diet three times UTL (supplemented; 60 µg retinyl acetate/g chow). Time-dependent decreases in periosteal circumference

Post-traumatic transient cortical blindness in a child with occipital bone fracture.

Cortical blindness as sequelae of trauma has been reported in literature but mostly in the setting of occipital cortex or visual tract damages. We present a case of transient cortical blindness in a child following a closed head injury with a non-displaced occipital bone fracture and underlying occipital lobe contusion. We discuss the pathophysiology behind Post-traumatic transient cortical blindness, relevant investigations, and current management.

Propagation of time-reversed Lamb waves in bovine cortical bone in vitro.

The present study aims to investigate the propagation of time-reversed Lamb waves in bovine cortical bone in vitro. The time-reversed Lamb waves were successfully launched at 200 kHz in 18 bovine tibiae through a time reversal process of Lamb waves. The group velocities of the time-reversed Lamb waves in the bovine tibiae were measured using the axial transmission technique. They showed a significant correlation with the cortical thickness and tended to follow the theoretical group velocity of the lowest order antisymmetrical Lamb wave fairly well, consistent with the behavior of the slow guid

Cortical bone response to the presence of load-bearing percutaneous osseointegrated prostheses.

Although the current percutaneous osseointegrated (OI) prosthetic attachment systems are novel clinical treatments for patients with limb loss, there have only been limited translational studies undertaken to date. To bridge this knowledge gap, from a larger study group of 86 animals that were implanted with a novel percutaneous OI implant construct, 33 sheep were randomly selected from the 0-, 3-, 6-, 9- and 12-month groups for histomorphometric analyses of periprosthetic cortical bone tissue. At necropsy, implanted and nonimplanted limbs were harvested and processed for the evaluation of cor

Lateral cortical bone thickness of human mandibles in region of mental foramen.

PURPOSE: We sought to verify the cortical thickness and presence of tooth roots and inferior alveolar canal where miniplates are placed using the Champy technique to treat parasymphyseal fractures between the canine and premolar. We also studied these anatomic features at the same level anteriorly and posteriorly to the mental foramen. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 80 dry, normal adult dentate human hemimandibles (40 male and 40 female) were studied. Verification was performed at 3 levels-above (S), below (I), and at the same height as the mental foramen (F). At each level, the thickness

Measuring metacarpal cortical bone by digital x-ray radiogrammetry: a step forward?

Changes in metacarpal cortical bone mineral density (BMD) using digital x-ray radiogrammetry were studied in patients with early rheumatoid arthritis. After 1, 2, and 5 years, large BMD losses were found: -1.7%, -2.8%, and -5.6%, respectively. Elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate and anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide levels were independent predictors of bone loss, indicating that the largest amount of bone loss was found in patients with severe inflammation and high production of auto-antibodies, who are known to be at the highest risk of developing radiological bone damage. Studies are ne

Reduced bone cortical thickness in boys with autism or autism spectrum disorder.

Bone development, casein-free diet use, supplements, and medications were assessed for 75 boys with autism or autism spectrum disorder, ages 4-8 years. Second metacarpal bone cortical thickness (BCT), measured on hand-wrist radiographs, and % deviations in BCT from reference medians were derived. BCT increased with age, but % deviations evidenced a progressive fall-off (p = .02): +3.1 +/- 4.7%, -6.5 +/- 4.0%, -16.6 +/- 3.4%, -19.4 +/- 3.7%,-24.1 +/- 4.4%, at ages 4-8, respectively, adjusting for height. The 12% of the boys on casein-free diets had an overall % deviation of -18.9 +/- 3.7%, near

Case-control study on self-reported osteoporotic fractures and mandibular cortical bone.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this case-control study was to determine whether the radiographic appearance of the mandibular cortical bone in patients who were elderly and noninstitutionalized was related to a self-reported history of osteoporotic fractures. STUDY DESIGN: Patients who had a billing statement at the School of Dentistry dated between 1993 and 1996, who were older than 60, and who had a panoramic radiograph were invited to be interviewed regarding fracture history (circumstances and year of fracture) and risk factors for osteoporosis. Cases (n = 93) were individuals reporting osteo

Rib biopsy technique for cortical bone evaluation in rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta).

Old World primates are often studied to model human skeletal physiology. An important advantage of monkeys over other animal models (i.e., rodents) is the presence of cortical bone Haversian remodeling. Seventy-five female rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) were subjected to bone biopsy. With monkeys in lateral decubitus position, the tenth rib was surgically exposed and freed from periosteum by use of careful sharp and blunt dissection. The rib section was resected, using bone cutters, and the surgical wound was closed. This procedure was repeated for the contralateral rib at a later time point

Defatted, gas-sterilised cortical bone allograft for posterior lumbar interbody vertebral fusion.

In posterior lumbar interbody vertebral fusion operations, variously sized, rectangular shaped, defatted, freeze-dried, gas-sterilised cortical bone allografts were used in combination with cancellous bone autografts from excised posterior elements. Single-level fusion, with or without internal fixation, was undertaken in 38 patients aged 50 years or less with disc herniation or a failed discectomy (the younger group) and in 33 women aged 60 years or more with degenerative spondylolisthesis (the older group). Of the various observable indicators of union, changes in the allograft-host interfac

Decreased cortical bone thickness in spontaneously non-insulin-dependent diabetic GK rats.

We studied the occurrence of osteopenia, as reflected by decreased cortical bone thickness, in a nonobese animal model of hereditary non-insulin-dependent diabetes with long duration, i.e., 8-month-old Goto-Kakizaki (GK) rats. In addition, motor nerve-conduction velocity was measured in the GK rats. Age- and weight-matched Wistar rats served as controls. The GK rats displayed marked glucose intolerance, as compared to control rats, in an intraperitoneal glucose tolerance test. Decreased cortical bone thickness by approximately 15%, was evident in X-ray analysis of metatarsal bones (p < 0.001)

Reconstruction of cortical bone remodeling in untreated primary hyperparathyroidism and following surgery.

Iliac crest bone biopsies from 39 patients (23 women, 16 men) with untreated primary hyperparathyroidism (PHP) were examined. Static histomorphometric parameters for cortical bone was compared with values obtained from 39 age- and sex-matched normal controls. Thirty-five of the patients were double-labeled with tetracycline before biopsy. The cortical remodeling cycle was reconstructed in these patients and compared with 24 sex-matched but younger normal controls. In 9 patients, a second intact bone biopsy was obtained 6-12 months after successful surgery for PHP. In these patients, pre- and p

Plasma proteins present in human cortical bone: enrichment of the alpha2HS-glycoprotein.

The spectrum of plasma proteins present in human cortical bone and permanent dentine has been determined. One plasma glycoprotein, the alpha2HS-glycoprotein, was found to be present at a high concentration in both bone and dentine and was shown to be concentrated in the mineralized tissues with respect to the other plasma proteins by factors of between 30 and 100. In this respect the alpha2HS-glycoprotein is analogous to the G2B-glycoprotein and alpha-glycoprotein of bovine and rabbit b one, respectively. The binding of alpha2HS-glycoprotein and albumin to calcium phosphates generated within s

A statistical shape model of the human sternum including cortical bone thickness.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding population-level variation in bone size and shape is important for general biomechanics, clinical assessments, and for developing heterogeneous human body models used in safety restraint design. Thoracic injuries are common in severe motor vehicle crashes, and although rib fractures are frequently studied, sternal fractures also occur in these scenarios. This study aimed to investigate how demographic factors-sex, age, stature, and BMI-relate to variations in sternal size, shape, and cortical thickness, all important factors for fracture tolerance. METHODS: Compute
