Molecular understanding of sulphuric acid-amine particle nucleation in the atmosphere.

Nucleation of aerosol particles from trace atmospheric vapours is thought to provide up to half of global cloud condensation nuclei. Aerosols can cause a net cooling of climate by scattering sunlight and by leading to smaller but more numerous cloud droplets, which makes clouds brighter and extends their lifetimes. Atmospheric aerosols derived from human activities are thought to have compensated for a large fraction of the warming caused by greenhouse gases. However, despite its importance for climate, atmospheric nucleation is poorly understood. Recently, it has been shown that sulphuric aci

Biomarker response to galactic cosmic ray-induced NOx and the methane greenhouse effect in the atmosphere of an Earth-like planet orbiting an M dwarf star.

Planets orbiting in the habitable zone of M dwarf stars are subject to high levels of galactic cosmic rays (GCRs), which produce nitrogen oxides (NOx) in Earth-like atmospheres. We investigate to what extent these NO(Mx) species may modify biomarker compounds such as ozone (O3) and nitrous oxide (N2O), as well as related compounds such as water (H2O) (essential for life) and methane (CH4) (which has both abiotic and biotic sources). Our model results suggest that such signals are robust, changing in the M star world atmospheric column due to GCR NOx effects by up to 20% compared to an M star r

Comparative analysis of leukemia and risk estimation in working age population between provinces of Ecuador.

Leukemia is associated with exposure to radiation, benzene derivatives, and pesticides. Previous research has documented an increase in work-related leukemia in the Latin American Andean region. To date, there are only few studies in Ecuador on the impact of oil exploitation on adjacent indigenous communities. Our study aims to show the impact of leukemia on the working-age population. For the calculation of morbidity and mortality rates, we used hospital discharge and death records from the National Institute of Statistics of Ecuador. These data were collected and adjusted to the correspondin

Biological effects of space radiation on human cells: history, advances and outcomes.

Exposure to radiation is one of the main concerns for space exploration by humans. By focusing deliberately on the works performed on human cells, we endeavored to review, decade by decade, the technological developments and conceptual advances of space radiation biology. Despite considerable efforts, the cancer and the toxicity risks remain to be quantified: 1) the nature and the frequency of secondary heavy ions need to be better characterized in order to estimate their contribution to the dose and to the final biological response; 2) the diversity of radiation history of each astronaut and

Dose estimation for astronauts using adult mesh-type reference computational phantoms.

Astronaut radiation exposure in low Earth orbit is strongly affected by orbital radiation environment, shielding condition, and radiation quality. In this study, a Geant4-based Monte Carlo model coupled with the adult male mesh-type reference computational phantom of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) was developed to estimate organ doses for astronauts in the Chinese Space Station (CSS) orbit. Proton and electron spectra from the Earth's radiation belts (ERB) were calculated using AP9/AE9, and solar-minimum galactic cosmic ray (GCR) spectra were generated using CRE

[Morphologic and cytochemical research aboard the biosatellite "Cosmos-782"].

Organs of rats flown for 19.5 days on board the Cosmos-782 biosatellite were investigated morphologically and cytochemically. After flight, as a result of drastic decrease or loss of static load on the musculeskeletal system in zero-g, the rats developed mineral metabolism changes that morphologically appeared as osteoporosis of spongy bones, their periosteocytic osteolysis, as well as inhibition of red blood cell precursors in bone marrow, atrophy and dystrophy of skeletal muscles. The development of stress-reaction which seemed to increase at certain flight stages (launch and re-entry) and w

Extracellular vesicles-derived microRNAs expression as biomarkers for neurological radiation injury: Risk assessment for space exploration.

Space missions pose threats to the health of the astronauts due to long-term exposure to galactic cosmic rays and solar particle events comprised predominantly of medium to high energy protons, energetic helium ions, and energetic high atomic number particles (HZEs). While the tissue-specific effects of radiation have been studied extensively, the changes in exosomal miRNA expression levels in response to acute radiation exposure have not been assessed. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) originate from the host cells and contain nucleic acid and proteins that can modify the physiology of the receivi

NCRP Vision for the Future and Program Area Committee Activities.

The National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP) believes that the most critical need for the nation in radiation protection is to train, engage, and retain radiation professionals for the future. Not only is the pipeline shrinking, but for some areas there is no longer a pipe! When the call comes to respond, there may be no one to answer the phone! The NCRP "Where are the Radiation Professionals?" initiative, Council Committee (CC) 2, and this year's annual meeting are to focus our efforts to find solutions and not just reiterate the problems. Our next major initiative is

Persistence of chromosome aberrations in mice acutely exposed to 56Fe+26 ions.

Space exploration has the potential to yield exciting and significant discoveries, but it also brings with it many risks for flight crews. Among the less well studied of these are health effects from space radiation, which includes the highly charged, energetic particles of elements with high atomic numbers that constitute the galactic cosmic rays. In this study, we demonstrated that 1 Gy iron ions acutely administered to mice in vivo resulted in highly complex chromosome damage. We found that all types of aberrations, including dicentrics as well as translocations, insertions and acentric fra

Existence of Dynamic Functional Connectivity Variations of Brain Networks in Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Seizures Through Resting-state Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

BACKGROUND: Long-duration space missions expose astronauts to hazardous radiation, including Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCRs) and Solar Particle Events (SPEs), producing secondary neutrons that penetrate spacecraft. Traditional aluminum shielding is inefficient and generates secondary particles, necessitating lightweight, multifunctional composites for effective radiation protection. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to optimize neutron shielding composites using Cadmium (Cd) and Lithium (Li) compounds within an Unsaturated Polyester Resin (UPS) matrix, targeting maximum attenuation of fast and thermal n

Fine motor deficits exhibited in rat string-pulling behavior following exposure to sleep fragmentation and deep space radiation.

Deep space flight missions will expose astronauts to multiple stressors, including sleep fragmentation and space radiation. There is debate over whether sleep disruptions are an issue in deep space. While these stressors independently impair sensorimotor function, the combined effects on performance are currently unknown. String-pulling behavior involves highly organized bimanual reach-to-grasp and withdraw movements. This behavior was examined under rested wakeful conditions and immediately following one session of sleep fragmentation in Sham and irradiated rats 3 months after exposure (10 cG

Predicted inactivation of viruses of relevance to biodefense by solar radiation.

UV radiation from the sun is the primary germicide in the environment. The goal of this study was to estimate inactivation of viruses by solar exposure. We reviewed published reports on 254-nm UV inactivation and tabulated the sensitivities of a wide variety of viruses, including those with double-stranded DNA, single-stranded DNA, double-stranded RNA, or single-stranded RNA genomes. We calculated D(37) values (fluence producing on average one lethal hit per virion and reducing viable virus to 37%) from all available data. We defined "size-normalized sensitivity" (SnS) by multiplying UV(254) s

Mechanisms of development of morphological changes in mammals aboard biological satellites.

After orbital space flights lasting 19.5--22.5 days, disturbances are observed in mineral metabolism in rats, which are morphologically manifested as osteoporosis of the spongy sections of long hollow skeletal bones, periosteocytic osteolysis of them, atrophy and dystrophy of skeletal muscles, and inhibition of erythroid growth of bone marrow, which occurred and developed in weightlessness as a result of deprivation of motor activity due to removal (or reduction) of static load from the musculoskeletal system. Development of stress reaction, which is apparently intensified at certain stages of

Reactivation of Latent Epstein-Barr Virus: A Comparison after Exposure to Gamma, Proton, Carbon, and Iron Radiation.

Among the many stressors astronauts are exposed to during spaceflight, cosmic radiation may lead to various serious health effects. Specifically, space radiation may contribute to decreased immunity, which has been documented in astronauts during short- and long-duration missions, as evidenced by several changes in cellular immunity and plasma cytokine levels. Reactivation of latent herpes viruses, either directly from radiation of latently infected cells and/or from perturbation of the immune system, may result in disease in astronauts. Epstein‒Barr virus (EBV) is one of the eight human herpe

Ice-core cosmogenic radionuclides support the occurrence of an extreme solar particle storm 5259 BCE (7208 years BP).

A prominent rapid increase in radiocarbon from tree rings has been detected in 5259 BCE (7208 years BP). In this study, we present 10Be and 36Cl data from the NGRIP and the GRIP ice cores from Greenland, and the EDML ice core from Antarctica around the 14C excursion. The ice-core radionuclide data show an increase consistent with the occurrence of an extreme solar energetic particle (SEP) event. The 10Be data show the event was of a similar magnitude as the extreme SEP event of 7176 BCE (9125 years BP), in agreement with previously published 14C data. Using all ice-core radionuclide data, we s
