At-risk behaviors with regard to HIV and addiction among women in prison.

The bulk of studies pertaining to addiction among delinquents have been conducted on male subjects. However, the few studies examining female inmates show that a significant proportion of them present an addictive disorder. Furthermore, the HIV infection rate is higher among these women than among incarcerated men. This study attempts to verify if women presenting a combination of criminal and addictive behaviors are at a higher risk of developing an earlier and a more severe delinquency than other delinquent women. Another goal is to determine whether women showing this comorbidity present a

Linking parental incarceration and family dynamics associated with intergenerational transmission: A life-course perspective.

Children experiencing parental incarceration face numerous additional disadvantages, but researchers have often relied on these other co-occurring factors primarily as controls. In this article, we focus on the intimate links between crime and incarceration, as well as on the broader family context within which parental incarceration often unfolds. Thus, parents' drug use and criminal behavior that precedes and may follow incarceration periods may be ongoing stressors that directly affect child well-being. We also use our analyses to foreground mechanisms associated with social learning theori

Comparison of the sociodemographic, clinical and offense-related data of delusional disorder patients with and without a criminal history.

This study investigates the relationship of delusional disorder and its subtypes to criminal and violent behavior by comparing the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of patients with and without a criminal history and identifying predictors of crime. The records of 346 patients with a delusional disorder diagnosis were retrospectively evaluated using a sociodemographic data form, a crime violence rating scale and the Overt Aggression Scale (OAS). The results show that homicide and attempted homicide were committed more frequently by patients with jealous delusions, whereas verbal as

The neurocognitive profiles of justice involved people with foetal alcohol spectrum disorder: A systematic review.

Foetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is highly prevalent in criminal justice settings. Despite increased awareness of the neurocognitive deficits among justice-involved individuals with FASD, no systematic evaluation of the literature in the field has been conducted to date. We aimed to conduct a systematic review of the literature on the neurocognitive profiles of justice-involved individuals with FASD, by searching five key electronic databases, dissertations database, and Google scholar, up to January 2021. The findings indicate that when contrasted with comparison groups, justice-involv

Recidivism and predictors of recidivism among female high level persistent offenders after a special court order for persistent offenders in the Netherlands.

Previous research has shown that female persistent offenders have multiple psychiatric and psychosocial problems, such as substance use disorders, other mental disorders, financial problems and housing problems. The present study examined recidivism and predictors of recidivism in a sample of 74 Dutch female high level persistent offenders who had been subjected to a special court order for persistent offenders, called ISD [Inrichting Stelselmatige Daders]. The criminal records were studied to gain insight in the criminal charges against women after release from the ISD. Results showed that 43

The Impact of Juvenile Sex Offending on the Adult Criminal Career.

Although past studies demonstrated the heterogeneity of the criminal career patterns of juveniles with sexual offenses (JSOs), such studies did not directly assess whether JSOs have different adult offending outcomes compared with juvenile nonsex offenders. Using data on a subsample of males from the Incarcerated Serious and Violent Young Offender Study, JSOs (n = 78), juveniles with violent offenses (JVOs; n = 550), and juveniles with nonviolent offenses (JNVOs; n = 281) were compared across a variety of adult offending outcomes. JSOs were not associated with a specific trajectory of general

The role of co-occurring disorders in criminal recidivism and psychiatric recovery among adults with opioid use disorder and criminal-legal involvement: A statewide retrospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) in the criminal-legal system commonly present co-occurring mental health disorders. However, evidence-based treatment for high-risk populations such as those with co-occurring disorders is often unavailable within jails and prisons. Coordination of timely and affordable access to behavioral health treatment following incarceration is critical to address the multidimensional needs of people with co-occurring needs. However, the role of co-occurring disorders among adults with OUD and criminal-legal involvement who are accessing community-

Gender-specific mental and behavioral outcomes among physically abused high-risk seventh-grade youths.

OBJECTIVE: Research has shown that physical abuse during childhood (early PA) is associated with various mental and behavioral problems in adolescence. However, there is little research on the differences in these associations by gender among youths residing in high-risk communities. This study investigated gender differences in the relationship between early PA and various internalizing (e.g., thoughts of suicide or victimization) and externalizing (e.g., perpetration of violence) behaviors. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted using survey data (collected in 2004) provided by 1,48

Epilepsy and violence: historical misconceptions, scientific evidence, and legal realities.

BACKGROUND: Epilepsy has historically been mischaracterized as a disorder associated with aggression and criminal behavior. Misconceptions dating back to the 19th century, particularly those propagated by Cesare Lombroso, have contributed to persistent stigma and misinformed legal interpretations. METHODS: This narrative review examines the historical, clinical, neuroscientific, and legal literature on the purported link between epilepsy and violent behavior. Key seizure phases-ictal, postictal, and interictal-are analyzed alongside recent findings from psychiatric comorbidity studies and for

Childhood predictors of male criminality: a prospective population-based follow-up study from age 8 to late adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: To study childhood predictors for late adolescence criminality. METHOD: The follow-up sample included 2,713 Finnish boys born in 1981. Information about the 8-year-old boy' problem behavior was obtained from parents, teachers, and the children themselves. The follow-up information about criminal offenses was based on the national police register between the years 1998 and 2001 when the subjects were 16 to 20 years old. RESULTS: According to the national police register, 22.2% of boys had at least one criminal offense other than a minor traffic violation during the 4-year study per

A comparison of male and female dually arrested domestic violence offenders.

This research provides information on dually arrested female defendants in domestic violence cases. The data comes from all heterosexual domestic violence cases resulting in a dual arrest from one large mid-South city during a 28-month period. Information on matched pairs of dually arrested male and female defendants (N = 317) came from multiple sources, including official criminal justice records (arrest reports and local criminal histories) as well as victim/offender interviews with both the arrestee and his/her partner. Comparisons were made between males and females in terms of their demog

Understanding the Relationship between Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) and Criminal Justice: A Systematic Review.

Prenatal alcohol exposure is considered one of the main causes of preventable birth disorders; however, it represents the main form of developmental delay in the world. Among the so-called secondary disabilities related to fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), there is a close connection with criminal behavior. This systematic review aims to provide up-to-date information about the relationship between FASD subjects and criminal justice analyzing different aspects. In light of the results of this review, a further goal is to provide several suggestions in order to reduce the public cost impa

[Problematic gambling and criminal responsibility].

OBJECTIVES: In total, 14% to 30 % of individuals with gambling disorder engage in illegal acts to finance such behavior. This clinical situation could be explained by higher gambling severity, associated substance use disorder, antisocial personality disorder and economic factors (debts, financial problems). The present work focuses, more broadly, on criminal responsibility of problematic gamblers. METHODS: We will discuss this question through different typical situations that medical experts of criminal responsibility may have to face. We will address each of the following cases: 1) isolate

Psychosocial needs of incarcerated veterans with other than honorable discharge characterizations.

The Veterans Health Administration recently expanded eligibility to allow behavioral health care for veterans with "other than honorable" (OTH) discharge characterizations, a group with unique demographic and psychosocial needs, including overrepresentation in criminal-legal contexts. To guide the integration of these veterans into Veterans Health Administration behavioral health care settings, this study offers initial insight into the needs of veterans with OTH involved in the criminal-legal system. Using data from the 2016 Survey of Prison Inmates, analyses compared incarcerated veterans wi

Prevalence of mental health conditions, substance use disorders, suicidal ideation and attempts, and experiences of homelessness among Veterans with criminal-legal involvement: A meta-analysis.

Veterans with histories of criminal-legal system involvement are considered high-priority within Veterans Health Administration (VHA) and criminal-legal settings. Over several decades, a large literature has accumulated to study these Veterans' needs. To consolidate findings, this meta-analysis provides aggregated prevalence estimates of common mental health conditions, substance use disorders, suicidal thoughts and behaviors, and experiences of homelessness among Veterans with current or prior involvement with the United States criminal-legal system. A total of 79 samples encompassing over 1.

Lower autonomic arousal as a risk factor for criminal offending and unintentional injuries among female conscripts.

BACKGROUND: Lower autonomic arousal is a well-known correlate of criminal offending and other risk-taking behaviors in men, but few studies have investigated this association in women. AIM: To test associations between autonomic arousal and criminal offending as well as unintentional injuries among female conscripts. METHODS: All women born 1958-1994 in Sweden who participated in voluntary military conscription (n = 12,499) were identified by linking Swedish population-based registers. Predictors were resting heart rate (RHR) and systolic blood pressure (SBP). Covariates were height, weight,
