Use of beneficial microorganisms in bean cultivation: strategies employed to increase productivity.

The common bean is of great importance for human nutrition worldwide as its grain is a cheap source of protein, but it has a high-cost production system due to the use of synthetic inputs such as nitrogen fertilizers and pest and disease control products. An alternative to promote the sustainability of the production system and increase crop productivity is the use of co-inoculation of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) to reduce and/or replace the use of nitrogen fertilizers and pest and disease control products. Since 2010, Brazil has stood out on the international stage with resear

Evaluation of 1,2-diacyl-3-acetyl triacylglycerol production in Yarrowia lipolytica.

Plants produce many high-value oleochemical molecules. While oil-crop agriculture is performed at industrial scales, suitable land is not available to meet global oleochemical demand. Worse, establishing new oil-crop farms often comes with the environmental cost of tropical deforestation. The field of metabolic engineering offers tools to transplant oleochemical metabolism into tractable hosts while simultaneously providing access to molecules produced by non-agricultural plants. Here, we evaluate strategies for rewiring metabolism in the oleaginous yeast Yarrowia lipolytica to synthesize a fo

Herbicidal Secondary Metabolites from Actinomycetes: Structure Diversity, Modes of Action, and Their Roles in the Development of Herbicides.

Weeds had caused significant loss for crop production in the process of agriculture. Herbicides have played an important role in securing crop production. However, the high reliance on herbicides has led to environmental issues as well as the evolution of herbicide resistance. Thus, there is an urgent need for new herbicides with safer toxicological profiles and novel modes of action. Actinomycetes produce very diverse bioactive compounds, of which some show potent biopesticidal activity. The herbicidal secondary metabolites from actinomycetes can be classified into several groups, such as ami

Control Strategies of Plant Viruses Using Spray-Induced Gene Silencing.

Plant viruses severely limit global crop productivity, yet no pesticide-like antiviral agents are currently available for effective control. Double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) technologies, acting through RNA interference, provide a sequence-specific and non-transgenic strategy to suppress viral replication and have emerged as promising non-transgenic solutions for crop protection. Spray-induced gene silencing (SIGS), which applies externally produced dsRNA through foliar sprays, seed treatments, or root uptake, provides practical advantages over genetic modification, including rapid deployment, envi

Global management of saline soils to boost crop yields and halve nitrogen losses.

Global soil salinity threatens food security and accelerates environmental degradation. However, the dual impacts of salinization on crop productivity and nitrogen dynamics have not been comprehensively quantified. Here we developed a spatially explicit nitrogen budget for global saline croplands and applied a pairwise comparison framework to assess salinity-induced changes in crop yields and reactive nitrogen (Nr) losses. We find that soil salinity raises nitrogen inputs by 13%, reduces nitrogen harvest by 7% and amplifies Nr losses by 61%. Our synthesis of ten categories of salinity-manageme

SPAS-Dataset-BD: Dataset for smart precision agriculture system in Bangladesh.

Precision agriculture harnesses data-driven techniques to optimize crop production, resource use, and sustainability. However, low-income countries like Bangladesh face a shortage of localized, high-quality datasets that reflect regional agroclimatic conditions and cropping practices. To address this gap, we present SPAS-Dataset-BD, a robust dataset compiled through a hybrid approach: secondary extraction from the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) 2022 Yearbook and primary on-field surveys of 223 farmers across ten diverse districts. The dataset comprises 4191 records over 73 crop types, w

Biochar: A Sustainable Solution for Mitigating Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Enhancing Soil Productivity-A Review.

Greenhouse gases (GHGs) resulting from human activities significantly impact crop production and agricultural sustainability, necessitating innovative solutions to mitigate their effects. One promising approach is employing biochar for GHG mitigation, providing a potential means to offset emissions and enhance crop productivity sustainably. We conducted a comprehensive review by sourcing reputable academic research from various search engines, focusing on terms such as biochar, methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrous oxide (N2O), GHG, soil organic carbon, agricultural land and cropland. East meets west: regional impact on agrochemical discovery and innovation.

The efficient production of the food needed to nourish an expanding global population continues to fuel the demand for new crop protection compounds. This task is made all the more difficult by the need to meet increasingly demanding grower, consumer and regulatory constraints. The discovery and development of new synthetic organic crop protection compounds has been largely the responsibility of the agrochemical industry in Europe, Japan and the USA, with government-funded academic research often playing a crucial role in the early stages of the invention and testing of novel activity. The way

Next-generation CRISPR systems and advanced delivery paradigms for precision crop improvement: a comparative case study in sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.).

Novel, climate-resilient, high-yielding crop varieties are urgently needed to address food security concerns for the world's growing population. Genome editing techniques have enabled the development of new crop varieties more cheaply, easily, and quickly than conventional breeding methods. A key concern with transgenic crops is producing transgene-free varieties. Transgene-free crops can be developed using new plant breeding technologies and can play a pivotal role in sustainable agriculture. Several techniques can bypass traditional methods for producing edited plants by using hypercompact n

A model-guided holistic review of exploiting natural variation of photosynthesis traits in crop improvement.

Breeding for improved leaf photosynthesis is considered as a viable approach to increase crop yield. Whether it should be improved in combination with other traits has not been assessed critically. Based on the quantitative crop model GECROS that interconnects various traits to crop productivity, we review natural variation in relevant traits, from biochemical aspects of leaf photosynthesis to morpho-physiological crop characteristics. While large phenotypic variations (sometimes >2-fold) for leaf photosynthesis and its underlying biochemical parameters were reported, few quantitative trait lo

Integrated crop-livestock farming systems influence the incidence of Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes, Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli, and indicator bacteria on fresh produce.

Concerns remain about foodborne pathogen contamination risks to integrated crop-livestock farm (ICLF) fresh produce due to farm animal proximity to crop fields and use of biological soil amendments of animal origin (BSAAO). This study aimed to evaluate the extent of microbial contamination in Maryland's Eastern Shore ICLFs and compare results with those from corresponding samples from crop-only farms (COFs), farmers' markets, and supermarkets. Altogether, 1,782 soil, animal reservoir, water, and produce samples from ICLFs, COFs, farmers' markets, and supermarkets were analyzed following standa

Light intensity and production parameters of phytocenoses cultivated on soil-like substrate under controlled [correction of controled] environment conditions.

To increase the degree of closure of biological life support systems of a new generation, we used vermicomposting to involve inedible phytomass in the intra-system mass exchange. The resulting product was a soil-like substrate, which was quite suitable for growing plants (Manukovsky et al. 1996, 1997). However, the soil like substrate can be regarded as a candidate for inclusion in a system only after a comprehensive examination of its physical, chemical, and other characteristics. An important criterion is the ability of the soil-like substrate to supply the necessary mineral elements to the

Plant diversity modifies multi-trophic interactions in croplands, grasslands and forests.

Multitrophic interactions can strongly influence the structure and functioning of ecosystems, but how plant diversity influences the direction and predictability of multitrophic interactions across agricultural and natural ecosystems remains unclear. Using 149 field studies across five continents, we found that, on average, increasing plant diversity tended to exert differential top-down and bottom-up effects in croplands versus grasslands and forests. Organic and nonorganic croplands exhibited 846 and 148% higher invertebrate natural enemy-to-herbivore abundance ratios under increased plant d

Comparative ergonomic assessment of manual harvesting of un-lodged and lodged paddy crops post-tropical cyclone in India.

OBJECTIVE: In recent times, increased rainfall from tropical cyclones due to climate change affects the agricultural sector, mainly the paddy fields. High windspeed with excessive rain causes lodging of paddy crops, which is difficult to harvest. Mechanized harvesting systems are ineffective in this situation due to waterlogging in the fields. Manual harvesting with a traditional sickle is the only way to harvest lodged crops to save food security crises and economic losses. Collecting the lodged paddy stems lying on the ground for harvesting manually is time-consuming and harvesters need to m

How does fertilizer management strategy in soilless blueberry cultivation change the phytochemical profile and phenoloxidases activity during fruit ripening?

BACKGROUND: Highbush blueberry fruits have attracted a lot of attention from consumers due to their exquisite taste and considerable quantities of bioactive compounds. This premium-class foodstuff also contains antioxidant enzymes (phenoloxidases) implicated in the degradation of polyphenols that lead to discoloration and loss of antioxidant activity during fruit ripening. Despite substantial progress in research focused on fruit quality, unanswered questions remain about the effect of fertilizer strategy in soilless blueberry cultivation on the phytochemical content and phenoloxidases activit
