Alcoholic liver injury (ALI) is a prevalent and severe form of liver disease that lacks specific therapies, relying instead on supportive care. In ALI, gut epithelial tight junction proteins are compromised, leading to increased intestinal permeability and the translocation of endotoxins, such as lipopolysaccharides (LPS), into the bloodstream, thereby aggravating liver injury. The plant Sicyos angulatus (SA), part of the Cucurbitaceae family, is recognized for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects but has not yet been studied for potential efficacy in mitigating ALI. In this study, we

Vitamin E (tocopherol) is a crucial antioxidant for both human health and plant adaptation to abiotic stress. Its biosynthesis relies on phytol, a moiety largely derived from chlorophyll degradation by members of the α/β hydrolase (ABH) superfamily. While genes like CLDs, PPH, and VTE7 have been characterized in model plants, their functions in melon (Cucumis melo L.) remain unknown. Here, we performed a genome-wide analysis and identified five ABH family genes in melon: CmCLD1/2/3, CmPPH, and CmVTE7. Phylogenetic and motif analyses revealed both functional conservation and diversification wit

Biological control of plant diseases has gained acceptance in recent years. Bacillus subtilis UMAF6639 is an antagonistic strain specifically selected for the efficient control of the cucurbit powdery mildew fungus Podosphaera fusca, which is a major threat to cucurbits worldwide. The antagonistic activity relies on the production of the antifungal compounds iturin and fengycin. In a previous study, we found that UMAF6639 was able to induce systemic resistance (ISR) in melon and provide additional protection against powdery mildew. In the present work, we further investigated in detail this se

Mogroside, the main component of Siraitia grosvenorii (Swingle) C. Jeffrey (Cucurbitaceae) is a natural product with hypoglycemic and intestinal microbiota regulating properties. However, whether the alteration of intestinal microbiota is associated with the antidiabetic effect of mogroside remains poorly understood. This study investigated the mechanism underlying the hypoglycemic effect of mogroside in regulating intestinal flora and attenuating metabolic endotoxemia. Kunming mice with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) induced by high-fat diet and intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin we

Ginsenoside-Rh2 and cucurbitacin-B (CuB) are secondary metabolites of Ginseng (Panax ginseng) and Cucurbitaceae plants respectively. We assessed the anticryptosporidial activity of these two functional compounds in a cell culture model of cryptosporidiosis. The highest concentration of each compound that was not toxic to the host cells was used to assess the activity against C. parvum during infection/invasion and growth in HCT-8 cell monolayers. Monolayers were infected with pre-excysted C. parvum oocysts. Infected monolayers were incubated at 37 °C for 24 h and 48 h in the presence of differ

BACKGROUND: Antacids, anticholinergic drugs, histamine H2- receptor antagonists and irreversible proton pump inhibitors have been used for the treatment of gastric ulcers. However, prolonged use of these drugs may lead to series of adverse effects such as diarrhea, headache, rash, hypertension, muscular and joint pain. Therefore, there is an urgent need of more effective and safer treatments with fewer side effects. The aim of the present study was to scientifically evaluate the gastroprotective activity of fractions of the hot water extract of Trichosanthes cucumerina Linn (Family: Cucurbitac

Trichosanthin (TCS) is a toxic protein isolated from a Chinese herbal medicine, the root tuber of Trichosanthes kirilowii Maximowicz of the Curcurbitaceae family. It is now used in China to terminate early and mid-trimester pregnancies. The ribosome inactivating property is thought to be account for its toxicity; it can inactivate the eukaryotic ribosome through its RNA N-glycosidase activity. The interactions of TCS with biological membrane is thought to be essential for its physiological effect, for it must get across the membrane before it can enter the cytoplasm and exert its RIP function.

Zeugodacus tau (Walker) is a polyphagous invasive tephritid capable of cross-family host shifts from ancestral Cucurbitaceae crops to phylogenetically divergent commercial fruits, causing severe horticultural economic losses. As an obligate fruit-boring pest, Z. tau largely relies on larval metabolic plasticity to achieve successful colonization of novel hosts during host shifts. However, few matched fruit-larva metabolomic studies integrate host chemistry to larval physiology, hindering sustainable pest control development. We performed untargeted LC-MS metabolomics on matched fruit and third

OBJECTIVES: Pumpkin and its seeds are increasingly consumed by children for their potential health benefits. Each day, approximately 30% of teenagers consume nuts and seeds, including pumpkin seeds. However, there is some evidence that pumpkin seeds may exert allergenic effects and induce severe life-threatening anaphylaxis. Allergy to melon, cucumber, and zucchini, which belong to the same Cucurbitaceae family as pumpkin, are well known, opposite to pumpkin allergy. Few descriptions of allergic reactions associated with pumpkin have been published, especially in children. To date, three cases
