Mark-recapture studies on the Culiseta (Diptera: Culicidae) vectors of eastern equine encephalitis virus.

Natural populations of Culiseta melanura (Coquillett) and Cs. morsitans (Theobald) were marked and released at three sites associated with the Toad Harbor-Big Bay Swamp eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus focus in central New York. Collections of Culiseta from surveillance sites within 12.8 km of the release sites were screened for marked specimens. A total of 172 marked specimens were recaptured. The majority of recaptured mosquitoes were collected at sites associated with the swamp complex, but some were collected at seven of the eight recapture sites, up to 9.8 km from a release site. T

Geographic distribution and environmental associations of Psorophora mexicana (Diptera: Culicidae) in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico.

Psorophora mexicana (Bellardi) is a rare mosquito species with limited information on its taxonomy, geographic distribution, and ecological preferences. In Mexico, presence records are scarce and largely outdated, particularly in the Yucatan Peninsula. Here, we document the current distribution of Ps. mexicana based on collections conducted between 2017 and 2025 across 14 localities in Campeche, Quintana Roo, and Yucatan states, including the first confirmed record for Quintana Roo. Specimens were identified morphologically and genetically using the mitochondrial region cytochrome c oxidase I

Effects of Chlorella sorokiniana KU.B2 microalga on the development of Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae) larvae.

Culex quinquefasciatus (Say) is a significant vector of lymphatic filariasis and arboviruses. Current control strategies rely heavily on chemical insecticides, highlighting the need for alternative and environmentally sustainable approaches. This study evaluated the effects of the microalga Chlorella sorokiniana KU.B2 on the development of Cx. quinquefasciatus larvae. Larvae were reared on microalgal-rabbit food diets: a control (100% rabbit food) and four treatments with increasing proportions of C. sorokiniana suspension (25 microalgae [Al], 50Al, 75Al, and 100Al). Additional rabbit food-onl

Coustani Group mosquito (Diptera: Culicidae) diversity and malaria transmission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

BACKGROUND: The Democratic Republic of Congo is one of the countries with the heaviest burdens of malaria. To ensure that vector control tools, particularly insecticide-treated nets, remain effective as a prevention tool, entomological surveillance has been conducted throughout the country. In one location, early biting was noted by a majority of mosquitoes, morphologically identified as Anopheles paludis, a species in the Coustani Group, which had previously been found to transmit malaria in this country. The aim of this study was to better understand the Coustani Group species diversity, bio

Effectiveness and biochemical impact of ozone gas and silica nanoparticles on Culex pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae).

Culex pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae) is a vector of many serious human diseases, and its control by the heavy use of chemical insecticides has led to the evolution of insecticide resistance and high environmental risks. Many safe alternatives, such as ozone gas (O3) and silica nanoparticles (silica NPs) can reduce these risks. Therefore, O3 and silica NPs were applied to 3rd larval instars of Cx. pipiens at different concentrations (100, 200, and 400 ppm) for different exposure times (1, 2, 3, and 5 min for O3 and 24, 48, and 72 h for silica NPs). The activity of some vital antioxidant enzymes a

Population structure and invasion history of Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) in Southeast Asia and Australasia.

The dengue mosquito, Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus, 1762), is a highly invasive and medically significant vector of dengue, yellow fever, chikungunya and Zika viruses, whose global spread can be attributed to increased globalization in the 15th through 20th century. Records of the invasion history of Ae. aegypti across Southeast Asia are sparse and there is little knowledge regarding the invasion routes that the species exploited to gain a foothold in the Indo-Pacific. Likewise, a broad and geographically thorough investigation of Ae. aegypti population genetics in the Indo-Pacific is lacking, despi

Evidence of Uranotaenia sapphirina (Diptera: Culicidae) feeding on annelid worms in the Northeastern United States.

Mosquito host-feeding behavior is an important parameter for determining the vector potential of mosquito species in a given locale. Despite the recent discovery of Uranotaenia sapphirina Osten Sacken feeding on annelid hosts in Florida, host association studies for this mosquito species in the United States remain limited. To investigate the blood-feeding pattern of Ur. sapphirina in the northeastern United States, mosquitoes were collected from Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Jersey using CDC miniature light traps, peat fiber resting boxes, gravid traps, and backpack aspirators. The Invasion and Encapsulation of the Entomopathogenic Nematode, Steinernema abbasi, in Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) Larvae.

The Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, is of crucial concern to the public and veterinary health because of its vector role in transmission of several mosquito-borne diseases. Over the past decades, entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) have been used to control important agricultural insect pests and are considered to be effective against mosquitoes as well. The objectives of this study were to investigate the mosquitocidal effects of Steinernema abbasi to Ae. albopictus and the encapsulation processes of invading nematodes in the mosquito host. In this study, we found that S. abbasi was pat

Environmental Drivers of Seasonal Patterns of Host Utilization by Culiseta melanura (Diptera: Culicidae) in Florida.

Field studies were carried out in four Florida counties to investigate winter and spring ecology of host use by Culiseta melanura (Coquillet), the primary vector of eastern equine encephalomyelitis virus (EEEV) in North America. Bloodmeal analysis by PCR was used to identify 233 host bloodmeals, which mainly originated from birds (78.5%) and reptiles (17.2%), primarily Anolis spp. lizards. Across counties, the percentage of bloodmeals from reptiles (7-37% depending upon county) increased with increasing day length and temperature in the spring. Multiple logistic regression revealed that differ

The Seasonality and Ecology of the Anopheles gambiae complex (Dipetra: Culicidae) in Liberia Using Molecular Identification.

Members of the Anopheles gambiae sensu lato (Giles) complex define a group of seven morphologically indistinguishable species, including the principal malaria vectors in Sub-Saharan Africa. Members of this complex differ in behavior and ability to transmit malaria; hence, precise identification of member species is critical to monitoring and evaluating malaria threat levels. We collected mosquitoes from five counties in Liberia every other month from May 2011 until May 2012, using various trapping techniques. A. gambiae complex members were identified using molecular techniques based on differ

Effect of lambda cyhalothrin and temephos on detoxification enzyme systems in Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae).

Mosquitoes serve as vector for transmitting diseases. Among mosquitoes, Culex quinquefasciatus transmits lymphatic filariasis, yellow fever Japanese encephalitis etc. Application of chemical insecticides is still the best option for vector control programmes. Continuous use of these chemicals on mosquito reduces its effects. The present study determined the baseline susceptibility of Cx. quinquefasciatus in response to λ-cyhalothrin and temephos treatments. In addition, the biochemical mechanisms and zymogram analysis involved in insecticide detoxification among larval mosquitoes were studied.

Changes in Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) populations in New Jersey and implications for arbovirus transmission.

The Asian tiger mosquito Aedes albopictus (Skuse) was first detected in New Jersey in 1995 during mosquito surveillance operations in Monmouth County. We tracked statewide changes in populations of the Asian tiger mosquito and its association with West Nile virus from 2003 to 2007. Ae. albopictus population abundance has increased in New Jersey since 2003, primarily along the urban corridor between New York City and Philadelphia, and they are now expanding their range further into suburban and rural areas of the state. Ae. albopictus has invaded all counties of New Jersey except for two northw
