Traditional Amerindian cultivators combine directional and ideotypic selection for sustainable management of cassava genetic diversity.

Plant domestication provides striking examples of rapid evolution. Yet, it involves more complex processes than plain directional selection. Understanding the dynamics of diversity in traditional agroecosystems is both a fundamental goal in evolutionary biology and a practical goal in conservation. We studied how Amerindian cultivators maintain dynamically evolving gene pools in cassava. Farmers purposely maintain diversity in the form of phenotypically distinct, clonally propagated landraces. Landrace gene pools are continuously renewed by incorporating seedlings issued from spontaneous sexua

[Variola: the history of a museal present plague].

Smallpox, once a major menace of humankind, is the only endemic anthroponosis that has completely disappeared due to organized human action. The history of variola and of the rationales of prevention and control associated with ancient variolation, modern vaccination and the surrounding research enterprises and sanitary regimes provide paradigmatic examples of the involvement of medical thought and scientific dynamics with natural and cultural necessities and technological evolution. Taking the form of a broad historiographic sketch this is discussed not only based on representative literature

[Mini-Mental State Examination:a useful method for the evaluation of the cognitive status of patients by the clinician. Consensual French version].

UNLABELLED: A PRACTICAL TOOL: Screening for cognitive deficiency has been considerably improved by the use of a standardized tool, the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). The MMSE only takes a few minutes and furnishes quantitative data for comparison between patients and to follow the evolution of a given patient. AN IMPORTANT ROLE: The MMSE is particularly useful for screening for dementia and states of mental confusion. It should be used systematically for elderly subjects, not only in the neurology setting, but also in geriatrics, psychiatrics and internal medicine. INTERPRETATION: The

Social phobia: an update.

The literature on social phobia is reviewed in this article. Social phobia has undergone considerable diagnostic evolution to reach its present form in DSM-IV. Its differential diagnosis includes panic disorder with agoraphobia, avoidant personality disorder, depression, and "shyness." Cross-cultural issues are important to consider because the disorder may manifest differently in different cultures and social settings. It is common, with a lifetime prevalence of 13.3% in the United States according to recent epidemiological studies. Underrecognition of social phobia remains an issue of concer

The women's movement and older women's health: issues and policy implications.

Since women are an increasing proportion of the older population, the health issues that affect older Americans must be regarded in large part as women's issues. Women experience aging differently from men. The advantage in life expectancy of women over men is not always a boon. Older women have substantially lower incomes and higher poverty rates, are more likely to be widowed and living alone, and depend more on entitlement and social service programs. This paper traces the evolution of the women's movement and identifies some of the health care problems of older women in terms of psychologi

Women medical missionaries in Kashmir from the late 1800s to the early 1900s.

Female medical missionaries significantly contributed to the advancement of healthcare practices in colonial Kashmir, especially in women's healthcare, nursing, midwifery, and medical outreach. This article analyzes the role of female medical missionaries in the development of institutional healthcare in Kashmir from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth centuries. It inquires how missionary women navigated local social and cultural obstacles, including gender norms and purdah regulations, to enhance access to medical care for Kashmiri women. The study examines the convergence of medicine

Two telomere-to-telomere Nelumbo genome assemblies reveal domestication history and empower precision breeding.

Lotus (Nelumbo) is an ancient aquatic plant of major ecological, economic, and cultural importance, yet its genomic architecture and domestication history remain incompletely resolved. Here, we generate telomere-to-telomere reference genomes for the two extant species, Asian lotus (N. nucifera) and American lotus (N. lutea). Comparative genomics analysis reveals divergence in centromeric regions and chromosomal structural variation between the two species. Population analysis of 832 globally distributed lotus accessions supports tropical Asia as the primary dispersal cradle of Asian lotus. We

[HIV-Related Stigma and Discrimination in Spain: Seven Years of the Social Pact for Non-Discrimination and Equal Treatment Associated with HIV].

The stigma and discrimination associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection constitute one of the main challenges for controlling the HIV pandemic globally. Despite biomedical advances that have turned HIV infection into a manageable chronic condition in contexts with access to treatment, the social and cultural dimensions of HIV continue to affect fundamental rights and the quality of life of people living with HIV, thereby hindering the achievement of the goal of eliminating AIDS as a Public Health threat by 2030. In Spain, the institutional response to this issue has evolved

The Moral Brain: a Neuropsychiatric Perspective on Moral Behavior and Motivation.

This review explores the interplay between neurobiological, psychological, and social factors that underpin moral behavior and motivation. Integrating insights from neuropsychiatry, it examines the roles of key brain regions such as the prefrontal cortex, amygdala, and anterior cingulate cortex, as well as neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, in shaping moral reasoning and ethical decision-making. The historical evolution of moral motivation theories, from ancient philosophy to modern psychological and neurobiological perspectives, provides a foundation for understanding intrinsic an

Low Prevalence of Reporting of Participant Race and Ethnicity in Gastroenterology Research Publications.

INTRODUCTION: Empirical information on the evolution of reporting race and ethnicity information in gastroenterology research is lacking. To facilitate understanding of where improvements are needed to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion in gastroenterology research, we aimed to evaluate reporting and representation by race and ethnicity in studies published in flagship US-based gastroenterology journals over 20 years. METHODS: We manually reviewed reporting and representation by race and ethnicity in all original research articles published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology a

Testing evolutionary hypotheses about human biological adaptation using cross-cultural comparison.

Physiological data from a range of human populations living in different environments can provide valuable information for testing evolutionary hypotheses about human adaptation. By taking into account the effects of population history, phylogenetic comparative methods can help us determine whether variation results from selection due to particular environmental variables. These selective forces could even be due to cultural traits-which means that gene-culture co-evolution may be occurring. In this paper, we outline two examples of the use of these approaches to test adaptive hypotheses that

Relationships of low density lipoprotein cholesterol with age and other factors: a cross-sectional analysis of the CARDIA study.

Presumed evolution of low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) was studied in a baseline cross-sectional survey of 4955 18-30 year old men and women of various sociodemographic backgrounds. Specifically studied were the influences on LDL-C and the change of LDL-C with age of race, gender, education, diet, physical activity, fatness and fitness. Men increased about 20 mg/dl per 10 years of age, while women increased about 3 mg/dl. Increasing education was found to be associated with higher LDL-C in blacks, but with lower LDL-C in whites. Higher Keys diet score and body mass index were positi

Intrahost variation and evolutionary dynamics of adenoviruses correlate to neutrophils in infected patients.

With deep sequencing of virus genomes within the hosts, intrahost single nucleotide variations (iSNVs) have been used for analyses of virus genome variation and evolution, which is indicated to correlate with viral pathogenesis and disease severity. Little is known about the features of iSNVs among DNA viruses. We performed the epidemiological and laboratory investigation of one outbreak of adenovirus. The whole genomes of viruses in both original oral swabs and cell-cultured virus isolates were deeply sequenced. We identified 737 iSNVs in the viral genomes sequenced from original samples and

Anaerobic and aerobic hydrogen gas formation by the blue-green alga Anabaena cylindrica.

An investigation was made of certain factors involved in the formation of hydrogen gas, both in an anaerobic environment (argon) and in air, by the blue-green alga Anabaena cylindrica. The alga had not been previously adapted under hydrogen gas and hence the hydrogen evolution occurred entirely within the nitrogen-fixing heterocyst cells; organisms grown in a fixed nitrogen source, and which were therefore devoid of heterocysts, did not produce hydrogen under these conditions. Use of the inhibitor dichlorophenyl-dimethyl urea showed that hydrogen formation was directly dependent on photosystem

The Molecular Basis for Antigenic Drift of Human A/H2N2 Influenza Viruses.

Influenza A/H2N2 viruses caused a pandemic in 1957 and continued to circulate in humans until 1968. The antigenic evolution of A/H2N2 viruses over time and the amino acid substitutions responsible for this antigenic evolution are not known. Here, the antigenic diversity of a representative set of human A/H2N2 viruses isolated between 1957 and 1968 was characterized. The antigenic change of influenza A/H2N2 viruses during the 12 years that this virus circulated was modest. Two amino acid substitutions, T128D and N139K, located in the head domain of the H2 hemagglutinin (HA) molecule, were ident

Mutational bias and local genome context constrain adaptive paths in experimental evolution.

Experimental evolution provides a reproducible testing ground for the study of adaptive evolution where the numerous degrees of freedom impacting the trajectory of evolution can be limited to their most controlled form. Evolution in a continuous culture device known as the chemostat further constrains the variables that introduce stochasticity by maintaining constant selective pressure and environmental conditions. Using a multiplexed miniature chemostat setup, we generated a highly parallel set of yeast evolution experiments in glucose-, phosphate-, and sulfate-limited media conditions with a

Telomere-driven karyotypic complexity concurs with p16INK4a inactivation in TP53-competent immortal endothelial cells.

Critically short telomeres promote chromosomal fusions, which in TP53-defective cells initiate the formation of cytogenetic aberrations that are typical of human cancer cells. Expression of the enzyme telomerase stabilizes normal and aberrant chromosomes by maintaining telomere length. However, previous investigations, including our own, have shown that overexpression of telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) does not prevent net telomere shortening in human endothelial cells. In the present study, two mass cultures of hTERT-transduced bone marrow endothelial cells (BMhTERT) and 26 clones we

An autonomous system for multi-objective continuous evolution at scale.

Natural evolution is high-dimensional; organisms adapt to many pressures at once, across substrates, environments, and genetic backgrounds. Yet most directed evolution methods flatten this landscape to a single selection axis, hiding tradeoffs, and limiting what can be learned. Phage-assisted continuous evolution (PACE) is uniquely suited for multivariate selection because horizontal gene transfer couples genotype to propagation and allows the same phage lineage to traverse different selection environments. In practice, implementing this at scale has been prohibitive because each selection dem

Hunters of the Ice Age: The biology of Upper Paleolithic people.

The Upper Paleolithic represents both the phase during which anatomically modern humans appeared and the climax of hunter-gatherer cultures. Demographic expansion into new areas that took place during this period and the diffusion of burial practices resulted in an unprecedented number of well-preserved human remains. This skeletal record, dovetailed with archeological, environmental, and chronological contexts, allows testing of hypotheses regarding biological processes at the population level. In this article, we review key studies about the biology of Upper Paleolithic populations based pri
