Does maritime Antarctic permafrost harbor environmental fungi with pathogenic potential?

We assessed the potentially pathogenic fungi present in Antarctic permafrost and the overlying active layer on King George, Robert, Livingston and Deception Islands in the South Shetland Islands archipelago, maritime Antarctica. Permafrost and active layer sub-samples were incubated at 37 °C to select fungi able to grow inside the human body. A total of 67 fungal isolates were obtained, 27 from the permafrost and 40 from the active layer. These represented 18 taxa of the genera Alternaria, Aspergillus, Curvularia, Penicillium, Rhodotorula and Talaromyces. The majority of fungi detected occurre

Foliar Application of Bacillus thuringiensis Regulates Soil Physicochemical Properties and Microbial Ecological Functions in Tea Plantations.

Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is widely employed as a biological control agent against pests in tea plantations, yet its impacts on soil health and microbial ecology remain insufficiently understood. This study investigated the effects of two Bt application regimes, namely moderate-frequency conventional Bt application (Bt1, 3 sprays over 21 days) and high-frequency intensive Bt application (Bt2, 6 sprays over 42 days), on soil physicochemical properties, enzyme activities, and microbial community structure and function in tea soils. The moderate-frequency conventional Bt1 significantly improved

Invasive fungal dermatitis in the < or = 1000-gram neonate.

OBJECTIVE: In 1991, we noted the emergence amongst our extremely low birth weight neonates of a new clinical entity, invasive fungal dermatitis, characterized by erosive, crusting lesions and a high rate of subsequent systemic fungal infection. We sought to define this condition and examine potential risk factors. METHODS: Sixteen neonates with invasive fungal dermatitis were seen during a 2-year period in three Baylor College of Medicine affiliated intensive care nurseries. Seven were confirmed cases, with skin biopsy evidence of invasion beyond the stratum corneum. Nine had a consistent cli

Allergic fungal sinusitis: pathophysiology, diagnosis and management.

Allergic fungal sinusitis (AFS) is a noninvasive form of fungal rhinosinusitis with an incidence of between 6 and 9% of all rhinosinusitis requiring surgery. Regional variation in incidence has been reported, with the southern and southwestern US particularly endemic. Patients with AFS commonly present with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps, inhalant atopy, elevated total serum immunoglobulin E (IgE), and sinus-obstructing inspissates of a characteristic extramucosal 'peanut buttery' visco-elastic eosinophil-rich material called 'allergic mucin' that contains sparse numbers of fungal hy

Unraveling the tripartite interaction of volatile compounds of Streptomyces rochei with grain mold pathogens infecting sorghum.

Sorghum is a major grain crop used in traditional meals and health drinks, and as an efficient fuel. However, its productivity, value, germination, and usability are affected by grain mold, which is a severe problem in sorghum production systems, which reduces the yield of harvested grains for consumer use. The organic approach to the management of the disease is essential and will increase consumer demand. Bioactive molecules like mVOC (volatile organic compound) identification are used to unravel the molecules responsible for antifungal activity. The Streptomyces rochei strain (ASH) has been

Fungal Disease Prevention in Seedlings of Rice (Oryza sativa) and Other Grasses by Growth-Promoting Seed-Associated Endophytic Bacteria from Invasive Phragmites australis.

Non-cultivated plants carry microbial endophytes that may be used to enhance development and disease resistance of crop species where growth-promoting and protective microbes may have been lost. During seedling establishment, seedlings may be infected by several fungal pathogens that are seed or soil borne. Several species of Fusarium, Pythium and other water moulds cause seed rots during germination. Fusarium blights of seedlings are also very common and significantly affect seedling development. In the present study we screened nine endophytic bacteria isolated from the seeds of invasive Phr

Antifungal activity of bio-active cell-free culture extracts and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) synthesised by endophytic fungal isolates of Garden Nasturtium.

Antimicrobial resistance in fungal pathogens (both human and plant) is increasing alarmingly, leading to massive economic crises. The existing anti-fungal agents are becoming ineffective, and the situation worsens on a logarithmic scale. Novel antifungals from unique natural sources are highly sought to cope sustainably with the situation. Metabolites from endophytic microbes are the best-fitted alternatives in this case. Endophytes are the untapped sources of 'plants' internal microbial population' and are promising sources of effective bio-therapeutic agents. Fungal endophytes were isolated
