Industrial effluent-derived Acinetobacter sp. PbS1A2 as a bioremediator against lead toxicity in Labeo rohita.

UNLABELLED: Lead pollution is recognized as a major global environmental problem that poses a serious threat to ecological integrity and environmental sustainability. The current study shows the bioremedial potential of Pb-resistant Acinetobacter sp. PbS1A2 in Labeo rohita. The fish were divided into three experimental treatments, namely, Control (T0), Pb only (T1), and Pb + Acinetobacter sp. (T2). The treatment T2 was particularly exposed to a concentration of 1.5 × 108 CFU/mL of Acinetobacter sp. along with Pb (1 mg L-1) for a period of 30 days. The results revealed that Acinetobacter sp. Pb

Effects of exposure to 17α-methyltestosterone on hepatic lipid metabolism in Gobiocypris rarus.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of 17α-Methyltestosterone (MT) on hepatic lipid metabolism in Gobiocypris rarus. G. rarus was exposed to varying concentrations of MT (0, 25, 50, and 100 ng/L) for durations of 7, 14, and 21 d. Biochemical and transcriptomic analyses were conducted using methods, such as ELISA, RT-qPCR, Western Blotting, and RNA-seq, to decipher the key signals and molecular mechanisms triggered by MT in vivo. The results revealed that MT induced hepatomegaly in G. rarus and markedly increased the hepatic steatosis index (HSI). After 14 d of exposure, significant inc

Effects of Dietary Cholesterol Regulation on Spermatogenesis of Gobiocypris rarus Rare Minnow.

Cholesterol is an important component of cell membranes, and also a precursor for the synthesis of sex hormones, playing an important role in reproduction. However, few studies have focused on cholesterol and reproductive health. To investigate the toxic effects of different cholesterol levels on the spermatogenesis of rare minnows, we regulate the cholesterol content in fish by feeding them a high-cholesterol diet and cholesterol inhibitor pravastatin, and cholesterol levels, sex hormone (T and 11KT) levels, testis histology, sperm morphology and function, and the expression of genes related

Epitheliocystis caused by a novel Chlamydia emerging in Spinibarbus denticulatus in China.

Epitheliocystis is an emerging and global aquaculture disease caused by a diverse range of bacteria of the order Chlamydiales. Here we report a case of epitheliocystis caused by a novel Chlamydia bacterium, which resulted in 40% mortality in cultured cyprinids (Spinibarbus denticulatus). The affected fish exhibited lethargy, were observed swimming near the oxygen pump and subsequently died. Histopathology analysis revealed that lesions were concentrated mainly on the gills. The epithelial cells of the damaged gill lamellae showed hyperplasia, fusion and adhesion, and were characterized by infl

Preliminary genetic evidence of two different populations of Opisthorchis viverrini in Lao PDR.

Opisthorchis viverrini is a major public health concern in Southeast Asia. Various reports have suggested that this parasite may represent a species complex, with genetic structure in the region perhaps being dictated by geographical factors and different species of intermediate hosts. We used four microsatellite loci to analyze O. viverrini adult worms originating from six species of cyprinid fish in Thailand and Lao PDR. Two distinct O. viverrini populations were observed. In Ban Phai, Thailand, only one subgroup occurred, hosted by two different fish species. Both subgroups occurred in fish

Transparent Tiger barb Puntius tetrazona, a fish model for in vivo analysis of nocardial infection.

Nocardiosis afflicts multiple species of cultured fish, resulting in substantial economic losses to the aquaculture industry, however, lack of detailed knowledge on disease pathogenesis has hampered the development of effective prevention and control strategies. In this study, we injected a green fluorescent protein (GFP)-labeled Nocardia seriolae strain into a transparent mutant strain of Tiger barb (Puntius tetrazona) to monitor tissue pathogen accumulation and tissue damage in vivo, and to clarify the relationship between pathogenic processes and overt symptoms. GFP-labeled bacteria were ph

A new species of Dactylogyrus (Monogenea: Dactylogyridae) parasitic on an endangered freshwater fish, Rhodeus atremius atremius, endemic to Japan.

A new dactylogyrid monogenean Dactylogyrus bicorniculus sp. nov. is described from the gills of the kazetoge bitterling, Rhodeus atremius atremius (Jordan and Thompson, 1914), an endemic species in Japan, from Saga Prefecture, northern Kyūshū. D. bicorniculus sp. nov. resembles Dactylogyrus bicornis Malevitskaja, 1941 and Dactylogyrus lophogonus Zhang and Ji, 1980 because they have two common features, a large V-shaped ventral bar and well-developed second marginal hooks. However, the new species is distinguished from these congeners by a shorter penis and an accessory piece. A phylogenetic an

Gonadogenesis and annual reproductive cycles of an endangered cyprinid fish, the lake minnow Eupallasella percnurus (Pallas, 1814).

In this study, gonadogenesis, the effect of temperature (15, 20 and 25°C) on sex differentiation, and annual changes in the gonads of mature lake minnow Eupallasella percnurus (Pallas, 1814) were determined. The lake minnow was found to be a primary gonochoristic fish species, where gonads are formed directly in the ovaries or testes. The morphological differentiation of gonads was initiated 35days post hatch (DPH) when two types of gonadal anlages were visible: a pear-shaped gonad attached by a single mesentery string and a spindle-shaped gonad attached on both sides to the peritoneum. Gonado

Dynamics and effects of Ligula intestinalis (L.) infection in the native fish Barbus callensis Valenciennes, 1842 in Algeria.

The dynamics of the emergence, duration, and decline phases in epizootic cycles are well known for humans and some crops, but they are poorly understood for host-parasite systems in the wild. Parasites may be particularly insidious as they are often introduced unintentionally, simultaneously with their hosts, and later transferred to species in the new location. Here we investigate the epizootic dynamics of the tapeworm Ligula intestinalis in the Hamiz reservoir, Algeria, and explore its effects on the cyprinid fish Barbus callensis. Regular sampling was conducted from October 2005 to February

Comparison of infectivity, metacercarial burden and host mortality induced by Opisthorchis viverrini sensu lato cercariae from Lao PDR compared with Thailand in cyprinid fish, Barbonymus gonionotus.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies indicate that Opisthorchis viverrini sensu lato (s.l.) is a species complex with strong associations to geographical regions, i.e., specific wetlands. The present study was conducted to compare the infectivity, establishment and metacercarial burden and survival of the fish host following exposure to O. viverrini s.l. cercariae isolates from two different river wetlands. METHODS: Experimental infections were performed by exposing fish (silver barb, Barbonymus gonionotus) individually to 0 (control) and 100 O. viverrini s.l. cercariae originating from the Songkram

Acute toxicity of runoff from sealcoated pavement to Ceriodaphnia dubia and Pimephales promelas.

Runoff from coal-tar-based (CT) sealcoated pavement is a source of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and N-heterocycles to surface waters. We investigated acute toxicity of simulated runoff collected from 5 h to 111 days after application of CT sealcoat and from 4 h to 36 days after application of asphalt-based sealcoat containing about 7% CT sealcoat (AS/CT-blend). Ceriodaphnia dubia (cladocerans) and Pimephales promelas (fathead minnows) were exposed in the laboratory to undiluted and 1:10 diluted runoff for 48 h, then transferred to control water and exposed to 4 h of ultraviolet radi

Histopathological and ultrastructural studies of the tapeworm Monobothrium wageneri (Caryophyllidea) in the intestinal tract of tench Tinca tinca.

Monobothrium wageneri is a monozoic caryophyllidean tapeworm of tench Tinca tinca. The pathological changes caused by this parasite within the intestinal tract of wild tench are described for the first time. Parasites were found attached to the anterior third of the intestine in tight clusters comprising up to 109 tapeworms. Infection was associated with the formation of raised inflammatory swellings surrounding the parasites. This host response, combined with the deep penetration of the scolex into the gut wall, formed a very firm seat of parasite attachment. Histopathological changes were ch

Seasonal variation of Opisthorchis viverrini infection in cyprinoid fish in north-east Thailand: implications for parasite control and food safety.

Reported is the seasonal pattern of Opisthorchis viverrini metacercariae in cyprinoid fish in north-east Thailand. Samples of fish were collected in 1991-92 at monthly intervals from two areas-Khon Kaen Province, where the opisthorchiasis transmission rate was high, and Mahasarakham Province, where the rate was low. Metacercarial loads in both study areas had similar seasonal patterns. High burdens occurred in the late rainy season and winter (July to January) with low burdens during the summer (March to June). The average burden for Puntius leiacanthus in Khon Kaen was 1.68 metacercariae per

[Evoked potentials in the optic tectum of the carp brain upon electric stimulation of the facial nerve].

The evoked potentials in the carp tectum opticum in response to stimulation of the afferent pathway for chemical nonolfactory reception, the facial nerve, are positive deflections of 5-25 ms latency which do not reverse during microelectrode submersion. According to the evoked potential amplitude and latent period 7 active zones were distingnished in the ipsilateral tectum differing from each other either in one or in both parameters. The dependence of the response evoked by facial nerve stimulation in the tectum opticum on the impulsation from the medulla is proved by the difference in latenc
