Schistosomiasis haematobia: histopathological course determined by cystoscopy in a patient in whom praziquantel treatment failed.

Schistosomiasis haematobia or urinary schistosomiasis is one of the main public health problems in Africa and the Middle East. A single dose of 40 mg praziquantel per kg body weight continues to be the treatment of choice for this infection. The aims of this follow-up were to study the post-treatment course of a patient infected with S. haematobium and not submitted to re-exposure, and to identify complications of the disease and/or therapeutic failure after praziquantel treatment by histopathological analysis. Treatments were repeated under medical supervision to ensure the correct use of the

Efficacy and survival associated with cystoscopy and clot evacuation for radiation or cyclophosphamide induced hemorrhagic cystitis.

PURPOSE: We assessed the outcome of patients with hemorrhagic cystitis severe enough to require cystoscopy and clot evacuation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated the records of 33 patients with cyclophosphamide or radiation induced hemorrhagic cystitis treated with cystoscopy. RESULTS: Mean followup of living patients was 76 months. Of 33 patients 20 (61%) had resolution of hematuria after single cystoscopy unrelated to hemorrhagic cystitis etiology. Only 4 of 11 patients (36%) had resolution after 2 or more cystoscopies, and all were in the radiation induced hemorrhagic cy

The value of cystoscopy and bladder biopsy taken at the time of tension-free vaginal tape insertion.

The primary aim of this study was to determine if a cystoscopy performed at the time of a tension-free vaginal tape (TVT) insertion is useful in finding unexpected pathology. A secondary outcome measure was to assess whether a bladder biopsy and cystoscopy performed during the TVT operation provide useful information about the outcome of surgery. The findings in 100 consecutive women were reviewed. A total of 42 women demonstrated mixed detrusor overactivity (DO) and urodynamic stress incontinence (USI); 32 women had abnormal biopsies. Women with DO were no more likely to have abnormal bladder

Screening cystoscopy and biopsy in patients with neuropathic bladder and chronic suprapubic indwelling catheters: is it valid?

PURPOSE: Screening for bladder malignancy in patients with neuropathic bladder and a chronic indwelling catheter by cystoscopy and biopsy is commonly performed. Despite this practice the test has not been fully validated to date. We analyzed our experience with this screening test and explored its validity when applied to our patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of screening biopsies in 36 patients with neuropathic bladder and a chronic indwelling catheter who had undergone yearly screening from 5 years after catheter insertion. Mean time since suprapubic cat

The role of excretory urography and cystoscopy in the evaluation and management of women with recurrent urinary tract infection.

We examined the roles of excretory urography and cystoscopy in the evaluation and management of 153 otherwise healthy women seen consecutively with recurrent urinary tract infections. The excretory urograms were entirely normal in 89 per cent of the patients; the abnormalities were incidental findings with no influence on subsequent management. These results, combined with the known expense and risks inherent in the use of iodinated radiologic contrast material, suggest that excretory urography be limited to those patients possessing other risk factors. These include a history of unexplained h

Leveraging Deep Learning in Real-Time Intelligent Bladder Tumor Detection During Cystoscopy: A Diagnostic Study.

BACKGROUND: Accurate detection of bladder lesions during cystoscopy is crucial for early tumor diagnosis and recurrence monitoring. However, conventional visual inspection methods have low and inconsistent detection rates. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the HRNetV2 deep learning model for intelligent bladder lesion detection, focusing on its performance at different image resolutions. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We recruited 94 patients undergoing cystoscopy or transurethral resection of bladder tumor and collected 102 white-light cystoscopy videos between July 2022 and July 2023

Enhancing the image quality of blue light cystoscopy through green-hue correction and fogginess removal.

Blue light cystoscopy (BLC) is a guideline-recommended endoscopic tool to detect bladder cancer with high sensitivity. Having clear, high-quality images during cystoscopy is crucial to the sensitive, efficient detection of bladder tumors; yet, important diagnostic information is often missed or poorly visualized in images containing illumination artifacts or impacted by impurities in the bladder. In this study, we introduce computational methods to remove two common artifacts in images from BLC videos: green hue and fogginess. We also evaluate the effect of artifact removal on the perceptual q

Patient tolerability during office cystoscopy and bladder tumor cauterization: a multivariate analysis of risk factors.

OBJECTIVE: Cystoscopy and cauterization performed in the operating room is expensive and exposes patients to anesthesia risks. Patient tolerability during office cystoscopy and cauterization is critical to the office management of bladder cancer (BC) and other urologic diseases. We evaluated the risk factors for pain of flexible cystoscopy in the office-setting with emphasis on a sub-group of BC patients who underwent cauterization. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective analyses of 110 anonymous patient surveys completed after cystoscopy and/or cauterization. Survey information included age, g

Deep learning-based classification of blue light cystoscopy imaging during transurethral resection of bladder tumors.

Bladder cancer is one of the top 10 frequently occurring cancers and leads to most cancer deaths worldwide. Recently, blue light (BL) cystoscopy-based photodynamic diagnosis was introduced as a unique technology to enhance the detection of bladder cancer, particularly for the detection of flat and small lesions. Here, we aim to demonstrate a BL image-based artificial intelligence (AI) diagnostic platform using 216 BL images, that were acquired in four different urological departments and pathologically identified with respect to cancer malignancy, invasiveness, and grading. Thereafter, four pr

Pediatric cystoscopy of male urethral strictures: an accurate and useful preoperative surgical decision making tool.

INTRODUCTION: To evaluate flexible pediatric cystoscopy (FPC) as an adjunctive procedure to retrograde urethrography (RUG) and voiding cystourethrography (VCUG) in the preoperative setting for male urethral strictures. Since imaging interpretation of stricture length and caliber can be difficult at times, we sought to evaluate diagnostic utility of FPC to predict reconstructive surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Reconstructive urology databases at Washington University and Columbia University were queried from 2010-2017. A total of 185 anterior urethroplasty patients met inclusion criteria. All

Intravenous salbutamol treatment for penile erection arising during cystoscopy of cervical spinal cord injury patients.

Two patients with long-standing tetraplegia after spinal cord injury developed reflex penile erection in the operation theatre. One had not received any anaesthesia, and penile erection occurred after introduction of the cystoscope into the urethra, and also autonomic dysreflexia. Intravenous salbutamol, in a dose of 10 micrograms, produced immediate and persistent penile detumescence and salbutamol-induced fall in blood pressure was of therapeutic value. In the second patient, penile erection occurred during general anaesthesia prior to cystoscopy. Immediate and persistent penile detumescence
