Application of the GARC Data Logger-a custom-developed data collection device-to capture and monitor mass dog vaccination campaigns in Namibia.

Domestic dogs are responsible for 99% of all cases of human rabies and thus, mass dog vaccination has been demonstrated to be the most effective approach towards the elimination of dog-mediated human rabies. Namibia demonstrated the feasibility of this approach by applying government-led strategic rabies vaccination campaigns to reduce both human and dog rabies incidences in the Northern Communal Areas of Namibia since 2016. The lessons learnt using paper-based form for data capturing and management of mass dog vaccination campaign during the pilot and roll out phase of the project (2016-2018)

Use of routinely collected health data in randomised clinical trials: comparison of trial-specific death data in the BOSS trial with NHS Digital data.

BACKGROUND: A promising approach to reduce the increasing costs of clinical trials is the use of routinely collected health data as participant data. However, the quality of this data could limit its usability as trial participant data. METHODS: The BOSS trial is a randomised controlled trial comparing regular endoscopies versus endoscopies at need in patients with Barrett's oesophagus with primary endpoint death. Data on death and cancer collected every 2 years after randomisation (trial-specific data) were compared to data received annually (all patients on one date) from the routinely coll

The collection of speech data for the assessment of cognition remotely: Balancing ethical and practical challenges.

Speech biomarkers could form a critical step in improving the accessibility, scalability, and early detection of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. However, ethical and practical challenges remain across regulatory and cultural contexts. In this paper, we briefly review the challenges in adopting speech biomarkers, relate our experiences globally to recent advances in the neurodegenerative field, and consider how speech assessments could be integrated into clinical care. Insights from high- and low- and middle-income countries (Taiwan, Ghana, Colombia, Brazil, Greece, UK, and US) demon

A systematic review of literature on substance use in nightlife settings utilizing in situ data collection.

BACKGROUND: Nightlife environments, including nightclubs, bars, and entertainment districts, are associated with elevated substance use and related harms. In situ nightlife studies offer an opportunity to capture real-time data on substance use from targeted populations. Despite the growing number of studies, no systematic review has yet been conducted on this topic. Therefore, the aim of this systematic review is to explore empirical in situ research in nightlife settings, with a focus on substance use. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted across four databases (WOS, PsycInfo, PubMed,

A national study of substance use: Demonstrated use of recommendations for best practice online data collection.

OBJECTIVES: Since the COVID-19 pandemic, more researchers have used to online data collection to recruit participants to research studies. However, one perceived limitation of online data collection is a belief that it results in lower quality data due to the introduction of bots or misrepresentation by participants to qualify for study compensation. The current study demonstrates that following recommendations for online data collection results in quick collection of a high-quality, diverse, multi-state sample. METHODS: The current study followed recommendations for best practice, advertisin

Prison health data collection: Transforming prisons from public health risks to opportunities for global health equity.

Despite the health challenges inherent to prison settings and their implications for public health and global health equity, in most countries we know almost nothing about the health status of people deprived of liberty, nor the prison healthcare services in place to respond to their health needs. Over 11 million people are imprisoned globally on any given day, and an estimated 30 million people are released from prisons into the community each year. Prisons concentrate some of the world's most medically and socially vulnerable populations, yet prison healthcare services are typically under-re

Biases in the collection of blood alcohol data for adult major trauma patients in Victoria, Australia.

BACKGROUND: In-hospital alcohol testing provides an opportunity to implement prevention strategies for patients with high risk of experiencing repeated alcohol-related injuries. However, barriers to alcohol testing in emergency settings can prevent patients from being tested. In this study, we aimed to understand potential biases in current data on the completion of blood alcohol tests for major trauma patients at hospitals in Victoria, Australia. METHODS: Victorian State Trauma Registry data on all adult major trauma patients from 1 January 2018 to 31 December 2021 were used. Characteristics

EWET: Data collection and interface for the genetic analysis of Echinococcus multilocularis based on EmsB microsatellite.

Evolution and dispersion history on Earth of organisms can best be studied through biological markers in molecular epidemiological studies. The biological diversity of the cestode Echinococcus multilocularis was investigated in different cladistic approaches. First the morphological aspects were explored in connection with its ecology. More recently, molecular aspects were investigated to better understand the nature of the variations observed among isolates. The study of the tandemly repeated multilocus microsatellite EmsB allowed us to attain a high genetic diversity level where other classi

Assessing the Validity of Automated Webcrawlers as Data Collection Tools to Investigate Online Child Sexual Exploitation.

The distribution of child sexual exploitation (CE) material has been aided by the growth of the Internet. The graphic nature and prevalence of the material has made researching and combating difficult. Although used to study online CE distribution, automated data collection tools (e.g., webcrawlers) have yet to be shown effective at targeting only relevant data. Using CE-related image and keyword criteria, we compare networks starting from CE websites to those from similar non-CE sexuality websites and dissimilar sports websites. Our results provide evidence that (a) webcrawlers have the poten

Improving antimicrobial prescribing in Irish primary care through electronic data collection and surveillance: a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: The increase in the spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in bacterial pathogens and limited availability of new antimicrobials places immense pressure on general practitioners (GPs) to prescribe appropriately. Currently, electronic antimicrobial prescribing data is not routinely collected from GPs in Ireland for surveillance purposes to assess regional specific fluctuations or trends in antimicrobial prescribing. The current study aimed to address this issue by assessing the feasibility of remotely extracting antimicrobial prescribing data from primary care practices in Ireland

[Drinking water data collection and information system in North Rhine-Westphalia. Integration of water supply zones].

To comply with the drinking water regulation act of 2001 and as basis for reports to the European Community, North Rhine-Westphalia has defined water supply zones and collected the necessary data from local health authorities. The software used for drinking water surveillance by the local health authorities and on state level has been adapted to the new requirements. In principle, a supply zone in NRW means a region where the water comes from one water-works. Under certain conditions exceptions are possible. 53 out of 54 local health authorities supplied data about water supply zones up to sum

Collecting, detecting, and handling non-wear intervals in longitudinal light exposure data.

In field studies using wearable light loggers, participants often need to remove the devices, resulting in non-wear intervals of varying and unknown duration. Accurate detection of these intervals is an essential step during data pre-processing. Here, we deployed a multi-modal approach to collect non-wear time during a longitudinal light exposure collection campaign and systematically compare non-wear detection strategies. Healthy participants (n = 26; mean age 28 ± 5 years, 14F) wore a near-corneal plane light logger for 1 week and reported non-wear events in three ways: pressing an "event ma
