AusTraits, a curated plant trait database for the Australian flora.

We introduce the AusTraits database - a compilation of values of plant traits for taxa in the Australian flora (hereafter AusTraits). AusTraits synthesises data on 448 traits across 28,640 taxa from field campaigns, published literature, taxonomic monographs, and individual taxon descriptions. Traits vary in scope from physiological measures of performance (e.g. photosynthetic gas exchange, water-use efficiency) to morphological attributes (e.g. leaf area, seed mass, plant height) which link to aspects of ecological variation. AusTraits contains curated and harmonised individual- and species-l

Factors affecting access to administrative health data for research in Canada: a study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: In Canada, most provinces have established administrative health data repositories to facilitate access to these data for research. Anecdotally, researchers have described delays and substantial inter-provincial variations in the timeliness of data access approvals and receipt of data. Currently, the reasons for these delays and variations in timeliness are not well understood. This paper provides a study protocol for (1) identifying the factors affecting access to administrative health data for research within select Canadian provinces, and (2) comparing factors across provinces

A graph-based cell tracking algorithm with few manually tunable parameters and automated segmentation error correction.

Automatic cell segmentation and tracking enables to gain quantitative insights into the processes driving cell migration. To investigate new data with minimal manual effort, cell tracking algorithms should be easy to apply and reduce manual curation time by providing automatic correction of segmentation errors. Current cell tracking algorithms, however, are either easy to apply to new data sets but lack automatic segmentation error correction, or have a vast set of parameters that needs either manual tuning or annotated data for parameter tuning. In this work, we propose a tracking algorithm w

Predictive modeling of spread in adult-onset isolated dystonia: Key properties and effect of tremor inclusion.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Several clinical and demographic factors relate to anatomic spread of adult-onset isolated dystonia, but a predictive model is still lacking. The aims of this study were: (i) to develop and validate a predictive model of anatomic spread of adult-onset isolated dystonia; and (ii) to evaluate whether presence of tremor associated with dystonia influences model predictions of spread. METHODS: Adult-onset isolated dystonia participants with focal onset from the Dystonia Coalition Natural History Project database were included. We developed two prediction models, one with d

Older Individuals Convicted of Sexual Offenses: A Literature Review.

The population of older individuals convicted of sexual offenses (OSOs) is rapidly increasing. However, we have little understanding of their characteristics (e.g., demographic, psychological, individual, offense, and risk) and needs. To identify any similarities or differences that are unique to older individuals convicted of sexual offending, it is important to compare such characteristics across the adult lifespan. Therefore, the aim of this systematic review was to specify and synthesize the current knowledge of characteristics across the adult lifespan of the population of individuals con

Use of Hand Therapy After Distal Radius Fracture: A National Perspective.

PURPOSE: To assess whether certain distal radius fracture (DRF) patients, such as opioid users or complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) patients, receive more hand therapy. METHODS: Using the IBM MarketScan Research Databases from January 1, 2012, to December 31, 2016, we identified a cohort of DRF patients and created 4 subgroups of interest: frequent follow-up patients, persistent opioid users, prior opioid users, and patients with CRPS. We measured rates and demographic characteristics associated with therapy use in our populations of interest. RESULTS: In this cohort of 87,313 patients,

[A heart sound classification method based on joint decision of extreme gradient boosting and deep neural network].

Heart sound is one of the common medical signals for diagnosing cardiovascular diseases. This paper studies the binary classification between normal or abnormal heart sounds, and proposes a heart sound classification algorithm based on the joint decision of extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) and deep neural network, achieving a further improvement in feature extraction and model accuracy. First, the preprocessed heart sound recordings are segmented into four status, and five categories of features are extracted from the signals based on segmentation. The first four categories of features are

An Automated Syphilis Serology Record Search and Review Algorithm to Prioritize Investigations by Health Departments.

BACKGROUND: Reactive syphilis serologies are investigated by health departments to determine if they represent new infection, reinfection, or treatment failure. Serologies prioritized for investigation based on nontreponemal test titer and age (using a "reactor grid") undergo manual record search and review. We developed a computerized algorithm that automates the record search and review. METHODS: We developed and tested the algorithm using a Florida Department of Health data set containing serologies reported January 2016 to December 2018 and previous records linked to each individual. Terrorism-Related Chemical, Biological, Radiation, and Nuclear Attacks: A Historical Global Comparison Influencing the Emergence of Counter-Terrorism Medicine.

BACKGROUND: Terrorist attacks are growing in complexity, increasing concerns around the use of chemical, biological, radiation, and nuclear (CBRN) agents. This has led to increasing interest in Counter-Terrorism Medicine (CTM) as a Disaster Medicine (DM) sub-specialty. This study aims to provide the epidemiology of CBRN use in terrorism, to detail specific agents used, and to develop training programs for responders. METHODS: The open-source Global Terrorism Database (GTD) was searched for all CBRN attacks from January 1, 1970 through December 31, 2018. Attacks were included if they fulfilled

Grouping attributes zero-shot learning for tongue constitution recognition.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) considers that the personal constitution determines the occurrence trend and therapeutic effects of certain diseases, which can be recognized by machine learning through tongue images. However, current machine learning methods are confronted with two challenges. First, there are not some larger tongue image databases available. Second, they do not use the domain knowledge of TCM, so that the imbalance of constitution categories cannot be solved. Therefore, this paper proposes a new constitution recognition method based on the zero-shot learning with the knowl

Assessing Genitourinary Cancer Clinical Trial Accrual Sufficiency Using Archived Trial Data.

PURPOSE: Clinical trials often fail to reach their anticipated end points, most frequently because of poor accrual. Prior studies have analyzed trial termination, but it has not been easy to assess accrual estimates using international databases such as ClinicalTrials.gov because of limitations in accessing accrual information. Specifically, it is not easy to extract both anticipated and actual accrual of clinical trials. We designed a new algorithmic approach to extracting trial accrual data from ClinicalTrials.gov and used it to estimate the sufficiency of patient accrual onto genitourinary

A bibliometric analysis of Intrauterine Growth Restriction research.

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is not a new subject in pregnancy. Nevertheless, this concept has newly begun to be integrated into pregnancy studies. We recognized articles that were published in English from 1977 to 2019 through electronic searches of the Web of Science™ database. The WoS database was searched for all published articles that compared preeclampsia from 1977 to January 2020. About 1469 documents in obstetrics and gynecology areas were analyzed in WoS database. VOSviewer software was employed to visualize the networks. The survey resulted in a 1469 published documents fr
