Vertical deceleration injuries: a comparative study of the injury patterns of 101 patients after accidental and intentional high falls.

We analysed the pattern of injury of 101 adult patients who were treated in our Trauma Center after a fall from an average height of 7.2 m between 1987 and 1990. In 62 patients the fall was accidental, and 39 jumped with suicidal intent. The most common injuries were fractures of the thoracic and lumbar spine (83.0 per cent) especially of the thoracolumbar junction. The pattern of limb injuries is towards a significant preference of the metaphyseal and epiphyseal parts of the bones of the distal joints (wrist, elbow, ankle, subtalar). Fractures of the diaphyseal areas and the proximal joints (

Ligation of cervical lymphatic vessels decelerates blood clearance and worsens outcomes after experimental subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is characterized by the extravasation of blood into the subarachnoid space, in which erythrocyte lysis is the primary contributor to cell death and brain injuries. New evidence has indicated that meningeal lymphatic vessels (mLVs) are essential in guiding fluid and macromolecular waste from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) into deep cervical lymph nodes (dCLNs). However, the role of mLVs in clearing erythrocytes after SAH has not been completely elucidated. Hence, we conducted a cross-species study. Autologous blood was injected into the subarachnoid space of rabbits and

Early monocyte modulation by the non-erythropoietic peptide ARA 290 decelerates AD-like pathology progression.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology is characterized by amyloid-β (Aβ) deposition and tau hyper-phosphorylation, accompanied by a progressive cognitive decline. Monocytes have been recently shown to play a major role in modulating Aβ pathology, and thereby have been pointed as potential therapeutic targets. However, the main challenge remains in identifying clinically relevant interventions that could modulate monocyte immune functions in absence of undesired off-target effects. Erythropoietin (EPO), a key regulator of erythrocyte production, has been shown to possess immunomodulatory potential

The effects of "decelerated" rehabilitation following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction on a hyperelastic female adolescent: a case study.

Current concepts in postoperative anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction management include participation in an "accelerated" rehabilitation program. There are no published reports examining the effects of accelerated or conservative rehabilitation on subjects with generalized ligamentous hyperelasticity. The purpose of this case study was to examine the effects of a conservative or "decelerated" rehabilitation program on the functional outcome of a hyperelastic female adolescent athlete following ACL reconstruction. The subject was a 15-year-old female basketball player who sustained

The lactate sensor NDRG3 decelerates ER-to-Golgi transport through interaction with the long isoform of syntaxin-5.

BET1, GOSR2, and STX5 variants can cause fatal inherited diseases, including epilepsies, muscular dystrophy, and multisystemic disorders. Together with Sec22b, they form a SNARE complex that mediates fusion of ER-derived vesicles with the ER-Golgi-intermediate compartment and the cis-Golgi. The Sec1/Munc18 protein SCFD1/Sly1 accelerates ER-to-Golgi SNARE complex assembly and membrane fusion, but much less is known about downregulation of ER-to-Golgi trafficking under cellular stress conditions. Here, we identify the lactate and hypoxia sensor protein NDRG3 as a binding partner of the ER-to-Gol

Sprints, Decelerations and Turns Most Commonly Precede Goals in Soccer: Analysis of 6 FIFA World Cups.

This study investigated actions preceding goals in male and female players across 6 FIFA World Cups. This is the first longitudinal, multi-sex analysis of goal actions using world-class data, extending validity and findings beyond the current evidence base (domestic, single-sex studies). In total, 2995 actions preceding goals from open-play were analysed across the last 6 men's' and women's FIFA world cups (2014-2023) using the modified Bloomfield method. Additionally, possible longitudinal (tournament cycle), sex, and role-based (i.e., scorer vs. assister) differences were examined using Baye

The clinical relevance of the decelerating effect of angiotensin receptor blockers on aortic growth in Marfan patients; a Bayesian perspective.

BACKGROUND: Marfan Syndrome (MFS) often leads to thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA), for which angiotensin (II) receptor blockers (ARBs) are prescribed to reduce aneurysm growth. Although recent pooled analyses demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in aortic growth with ARBs under a frequentist framework, the clinical relevance of this effect remains uncertain. Moreover, ARB therapy is notably burdensome for patients due to significant side-effects. Therefore, this study re-analyses randomised ARB versus comparator trials in MFS patients, under a Bayesian statistical framework. METHO

The Correlation Between the Total Decelerations and Accelerations Areas and Cord Blood pH in Women with Low-Risk Pregnancies.

Fetal acidosis among low-risk pregnancies is not common; however, identifying those at risk for this complication antenatally is of great interest. We aimed to assess the correlation between the total decelerations area during the last 120 min of fetal monitoring prior to delivery and neonatal acidemia in low-risk pregnancies and whether the total acceleration area has a protective effect in the presence of decelerations. A retrospective cohort study was conducted among women with term low-risk pregnancies. A researcher blinded to fetal outcomes interpreted electronic fetal monitor patterns du

Coenzyme Q10 exhibits anti-inflammatory and immune-modulatory thereby decelerating the occurrence of experimental cerebral malaria.

Cerebral Malaria (CM) is associated with the complex neurological syndrome, whose pathology is mediated by severe inflammatory processes following infection with Plasmodium falciparum. Coenzyme-Q10 (Co-Q10) is a potent anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and anti-apoptotic agent with numerous clinical applications. The aim of this study was to elucidate the role of oral administration of Co-Q10 on the initiation or regulation of inflammatory immune response during experimental cerebral malaria (ECM). For this purpose, the pre-clinical effect of Co-Q10 was evaluated in C57BL/6 J mice infected with

Silicate Ions Derived from Calcium Silicate Extract Decelerate Ang II-Induced Cardiac Remodeling.

BACKGROUND: Pathological cardiac hypertrophy is one of the main activators of heart failure. Currently, no drug can completely reverse or inhibit the development of pathological cardiac hypertrophy. To this end, we proposed a silicate ion therapy based on extract derived from calcium silicate (CS) bioceramics for the treatment of angiotensin II (Ang II) induced cardiac hypertrophy. METHODS: In this study, the Ang II induced cardiac hypertrophy mouse model was established, and the silicate ion extract was injected to mice intravenously. The cardiac function was evaluated by using a high-resolu

Exploratory field trial of motorcycle autonomous emergency braking (MAEB): Considerations on the acceptability of unexpected automatic decelerations.

OBJECTIVE: Autonomous emergency braking (AEB) acts to slow down a vehicle when an unavoidable impending collision is detected. In addition to documented benefits when applied to passenger cars, AEB has also shown potential when applied to motorcycles (MAEB). However, the feasibility of MAEB as practically applied to motorcycles in the real world is not well understood. METHODS: In this study we performed a field trial involving 16 riders on a test motorcycle subjected to automatic decelerations, thus simulating MAEB activation. The tests were conducted along a rectilinear path at nominal spee

The impact of non-significant variable decelerations appearing in the latent phase on delivery mode: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Variable decelerations are the most frequent fetal heart rate changes that are related to labor. The objective of the study was to estimate the impact of non-significant variable decelerations (NSV) appearing during the latent phase of labor on delivery mode and neonatal outcome. METHODS: Women at term, who were in the latent phase of labor and had a singleton pregnancy, were prospectively included. Women were divided into three groups. All had a fetal heart rate tracing with normal baseline and variability. The study group was composed of women who had in addition NSV, Category I

Primary vagally mediated decelerations in heart rate during tonic rapid eye movement sleep in cats.

Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep results in profound state-dependent alterations in heart rate. The present study describes a novel phenomenon of a primary deceleration in heart rate that is not preceded or followed by increases in heart rate or arterial blood pressure and occurs primarily during tonic REM sleep. The goals were to characterize the primary decelerations and to provide insights on the underlying central and peripheral autonomic mechanisms. Cats were chronically implanted with electrodes to record electroencephalogram, pontogeniculooccipital wave activity in lateral geniculate nucl

Intermittent v continuous ischemia decelerates adenylate breakdown and prevents norepinephrine release in reperfused rabbit heart.

Myocardium tolerates intermittent ischemia followed by short reperfusions better than continuous ischemia of the same duration. We attempted to delineate the differential mechanism(s) involved in intermittent v continuous ischemia. Isolated, paced rabbit hearts were perfused at 22 ml/min. Coronary flow was stopped intermittently 12 x for 2 or 4 min, with 3-min reperfusions (total reperfusion period: 36 min). In two other groups, flow was stopped continuously for 24 or 36 min followed by a flat 36-min reperfusion. Following the first intermittent 2-min ischemia, adenosine efflux increased ninef

Short-term fetal heart rate variation, decelerations, and umbilical flow velocity waveforms before labor.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the value of computerized antepartum measurements of short-term fetal heart rate (FHR) variation and decelerations as a predictor of outcome, and to compare these with measurements of the umbilical artery flow velocity waveform. METHODS: Data were collected from 3563 high-risk patients for measurements of FHR variables (15,702 records) and outcome (intrauterine death or metabolic acidemia on delivery). Detailed analyses were made on 89 patients with one or more records in which short-term FHR variation was 3 milliseconds or less. Umbilical artery flow velocity waveform

Children with developmental dyslexia show elevated parasympathetic nervous system activity at rest and greater cardiac deceleration during an empathy task.

Reading difficulties are the hallmark feature of dyslexia, but less is known about other areas of functioning. Previously, we found children with dyslexia exhibited heightened emotional reactivity, which correlated with better social skills. Whether emotional differences in dyslexia extend to the parasympathetic nervous system-an autonomic branch critical for attention, social engagement, and empathy-is unknown. Here, we measured autonomic nervous system activity in 24 children with dyslexia and 24 children without dyslexia, aged 7 - 12, at rest and during a film-based empathy task. At rest, c

Relationship Between Adverse Neonatal Outcomes and Diastolic Deceleration Area on Fetal MCA Doppler in Patients with Late Fetal Growth Restriction.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the predictive value of the Diastolic Deceleration Area (DDA), a novel Doppler ultrasound parameter, in detecting adverse neonatal outcomes in fetuses with late-onset fetal growth restriction (FGR). While Doppler parameters such as cerebroplacental ratio (CPR), umbilicocerebral ratio (UCR), and cerebralplacentaluterine ratio (CPUR) are commonly used for fetal monitoring, their predictive power varies. Given the importance of cerebral blood flow redistribution in fetal adaptation to hypoxia, we investigated whether DDA could serve as a reliable indicator o
