BACKGROUND: Shared decision-making (SDM), a cornerstone of patient-centered care, is associated with increased patient satisfaction and improved health outcomes. Nurses, as integral members of the health care team, play a pivotal role in SDM by advocating for patients and facilitating communication. However, their involvement in SDM is often constrained by systemic and organizational factors. Identifying the factors that significantly influence nurses' engagement in SDM is essential to advancing SDM practice.
PURPOSE: This study, guided by the theory of planned behavior (TPB), was designed to

OBJECTIVE: Uncertainty about the most appropriate treatment option is the fundamental reason to involve patients in shared decision making (SDM). Clinicians and patients involved in SDM processes both face uncertainty. The various ways in which SDM and uncertainty may intersect, have not yet explicitly been explored. We aimed to a) conceptually describe the various ways in which uncertainty may manifest and affect clinicians and patients during SDM processes, and b) empirically illustrate how uncertainty is expressed and responded to during treatment decision making.
METHODS: A limited-scope,

BACKGROUND: Glioblastomas are highly aggressive brain tumors and tumor recurrence is inevitable. At tumor recurrence, critical decisions about treatment and care have to be made, and in this process, patients and relatives require decision support. This study aimed to investigate how patients with glioblastoma and their relatives experienced the "Decision Helper" (DH) which is a paper-based decision aid designed to guide shared decision making in neurosurgical consultations.
METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 patients and 15 close relatives immediately after the neuros

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Despite the high prevalence of urinary incontinence, many women do not receive care. Urinary incontinence requires multiple personalized decisions across the care continuum. This review examines how shared decision-making and decision science may inform efforts to improve the delivery of patient-centered urinary incontinence care.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent literature describes the complexity of patients' decision-making across multiple stages of the urinary incontinence care continuum, including deciding whether to mention urinary symptoms, to seek an appropriate clinician or

Obstetric medicine is a specialized field providing medical care to women with internal diseases who wish to conceive or whose conditions manifest during pregnancy. It bridges the gap between internal medicine and obstetrics by addressing the medical complexities that arise when the physiological changes of pregnancy unmask or exacerbate pre-existing conditions. In clinical practice, Japanese physicians rely heavily on electronic package inserts, which are notably conservative; approximately 21.6% of drugs are contraindicated for pregnant women in Japan, compared to only 4.3% in Australia. BACKGROUND: Over a quarter of adults in Europe have limited health literacy (LHL). LHL hampers their ability to find, understand, and implement medical information, resulting in poorer health outcomes. Shared decision-making (SDM), a process that enhances communication and personalised care and encourages patient involvement, can mitigate the challenges individuals with LHL face. However, healthcare providers often struggle to recognise and effectively engage these patients in SDM. This realist review aims to understand how, why, for whom, and under what circumstances SDM does or does not work

Shared decision-making (SDM) enables patients to actively engage in healthcare decisions by ensuring that treatment options align with their values and preferences. The use of SDM is increasingly recognized in the context of selecting kidney replacement therapy (KRT) for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). This study reviews the general concept of SDM and global clinical studies on its application in selecting KRT options. Studies have demonstrated the significant benefits of SDM in KRT, including enhanced patient knowledge, satisfaction, autonomy, and increased peritoneal dialysis (PD

Shared decision-making (SDM) and multidisciplinary team-based care delivery are recommended across several cardiology clinical practice guidelines. However, evidence for benefit and guidance on implementation are limited. Informed consent, the use of patient decision aids, or the documentation of these elements for governmental or societal agencies may be conflated as SDM. SDM is a bidirectional exchange between experts: patients are the experts on their goals, values, and preferences, and clinicians provide their expertise on clinical factors. In this Expert Panel perspective, we review the c

STUDY DESIGN: Scoping review.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to conduct a scoping review exploring the extent to which preference sensitivity has been studied in treatment decisions for lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS), utilizing shared decision-making (SDM) as a proxy.
BACKGROUND: Preference-sensitive care involves situations where multiple treatment options exist with significant tradeoffs in cost, outcome, recovery time, and quality of life. LSS has gained research focus as a preference-sensitive care scenario.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A scoping review protocol in accordance with "

OBJECTIVE: In 2019, the United States Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) updated their meningococcal serogroup B (MenB) vaccination recommendation for 16-23-year-olds from individual to shared clinical decision-making (SCDM). SCDM recommendations are individually based and informed by a decision process between patients and healthcare providers (HCPs). MenB vaccination among 16-23-year-olds remains low. We examined recorded conversations in which MenB vaccine-related discussions between HCPs and patients/caregivers took place, and how these interactions changed following the

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Inflammatory bowel disease colitis-associated dysplasia is managed with either enhanced surveillance and endoscopic resection or prophylactic surgery. The rate of progression to cancer after a dysplasia diagnosis remains uncertain in many cases and patients have high thresholds for accepting proctocolectomy. Individualised discussion of management options is encouraged to take place between patients and their multidisciplinary teams for best outcomes. We aimed to develop a toolkit to support a structured, multidisciplinary and shared decision-making approach to discussions

Shared decision-making is increasingly embraced in health care and recommended in cardiovascular guidelines. Patient involvement in health care decisions, patient-clinician communication, and models of patient-centered care are critical to improve health outcomes and to promote equity, but formal models and evaluation in cardiovascular care are nascent. Shared decision-making promotes equity by involving clinicians and patients, sharing the best available evidence, and recognizing the needs, values, and experiences of individuals and their families when faced with the task of making decisions.

BackgroundPatient involvement in decision-making plays a prominent role in improving the quality of healthcare. Despite this, shared decision-making is not routinely implemented. However, electronic assessment tools that capture patients' history, symptoms, opinions and values prior to their medical appointment are used by healthcare professionals during patient consultations to facilitate shared decision-making.ObjectiveTo assess the effectiveness of electronic assessment tools to improve the shared decision-making process.MethodA systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. Multiple treatment options are available to patients with Dupuytren contracture, making shared decision-making complex. Our rigorous qualitative analysis sought to understand patient perceptions of shared decision-making in Dupuytren contracture treatment and create a conceptual framework to optimize patient-physician communication. We interviewed 30 patients with Dupuytren contracture to learn about their experience with treatment selection. The following themes were integral to shared decision-making for Dupuytren contracture treatment: discussing disease progression and treatment initiation

BACKGROUND: Patients with Dupuytren contracture can receive a variety of surgical and nonsurgical treatments. The extent to which patients participate in the shared decision-making process is unclear.
METHODS: An explanatory-sequential mixed-methods study was conducted. Participants completed the Nine-Item Shared Decision-Making Questionnaire and the brief Michigan Hand Outcomes Questionnaire before completing semi-structured interviews in which they described their experience with selecting treatment.
RESULTS: Thirty participants [25 men (83%) and five women (17%); mean age, 69 years (range

Shared decision making is an important implementation "pull" strategy for increasing uptake of evidence-based mental health practices. In this qualitative study, we explored provider perspectives on implementing shared decision making at the point of mental health treatment initiation using a publicly available, patient-facing decision support tool for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We conducted semi-structured interviews with 22 mental health providers (psychiatrists, nurses, psychologists, and social workers) working in one of five VA primary care clinics. Interviewed were analyzed u

UNLABELLED: WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: Shared decision-making is a concept originating in the medical field, and it is ideally based on a trustful relationship between the patient and the health professionals involved. Shared decision-making shows potential to strengthen patient autonomy and encourages patients to become involved in decisions regarding their treatment. WHAT DOES THE PAPER ADD TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: A universal concept and understanding of shared decision-making with relevance specifically to psychiatric clinical practice could not be identified in the analysed literature.
