Dopaminergic function and intertemporal choice.

The discounting of delayed rewards, also known as temporal or delay discounting, is intrinsic to everyday decisions and can be impaired in pathological states such as addiction disorders. Preclinical and human studies suggest a role for dopaminergic function in temporal discounting but this relationship has not yet been verified using molecular imaging of the living human brain. Here, we evaluated dopaminergic function in temporal discounting using positron emission tomography (PET) with two different dopaminergic ligands assessing three populations in whom temporal discounting has been shown

Does slow release oral morphine have impact on craving and impulsivity in heroin dependent individuals?

Craving and impulsivity are addiction components which explain why heroin-dependant individuals (HDI), continue using heroin despite not wanting to do so. Opioid maintenance treatment (OMT), such as slow-release oral morphine (SROM), is the most effective treatment for opioid dependence. However, the impact of SROM on craving and impulsivity remains unclear. In this observational study, 23 HDI receiving SROM, their usual OMT, took part in the experiment. Each of the participants filled in the perceived level of craving with a visual analog scale. Their impulsivity was assessed via three labora

Impulsive decision-making and gambling severity: The influence of γ-amino-butyric acid (GABA) and glutamate-glutamine (Glx).

Discounting larger, delayed rewards for smaller, immediate rewards is a stable psychological trait known to be impaired in gambling disorder (GD). Neuroimaging with non-GD populations indicates involvement of anterior cingulate (ACC) and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) in delay discounting. However, little is known about the role of intrinsic properties of brain functioning, such as neurotransmitter action, in impaired discounting in GD. Here, we used magnetic resonance spectroscopy to assess glutamate-glutamine (Glx) and γ-amino-butyric acid (GABA+) concentrations in the dorsal ACC (dA

Test-retest reliability and gender differences in the sexual discounting task among cocaine-dependent individuals.

The Sexual Discounting Task uses the delay discounting framework to examine sexual HIV risk behavior. Previous research showed task performance to be significantly correlated with self-reported HIV risk behavior in cocaine dependence. Test-retest reliability and gender differences had remained unexamined. The present study examined the test-retest reliability of the Sexual Discounting Task. Cocaine-dependent individuals (18 men, 13 women) completed the task in two laboratory visits ∼7 days apart. Participants selected photographs of individuals with whom they were willing to have casual sex. A

Neural Markers of Reward Valuation and Impulsive Decision-Making in Mania Risk.

IMPORTANCE: Mania or hypomania, the pathognomonic feature of bipolar disorder (BD), is associated with reward hypersensitivity and impulsive decision-making, but the neural mechanisms underlying these distinct behavioral facets remain unclear. Reward expectancy (RE)-associated activation in the left ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (L-vlPFC) and pre-supplementary motor area (pre-SMA) is elevated in individuals at risk of mania or hypomania, but it is unknown whether elevated activation in these regions and associations with risk-related behavioral facets reflect convergent or dissociable pathwa

Formal comparison of dual-parameter temporal discounting models in controls and pathological gamblers.

Temporal or delay discounting refers to the phenomenon that the value of a reward is discounted as a function of time to delivery. A range of models have been proposed that approximate the shape of the discount curve describing the relationship between subjective value and time. Recent evidence suggests that more than one free parameter may be required to accurately model human temporal discounting data. Nonetheless, many temporal discounting studies in psychiatry, psychology and neuroeconomics still apply single-parameter models, despite their oftentimes poor fit to single-subject data. Previ

Stress and episodic future thinking: Effects on temporal window and alcohol demand.

BACKGROUND: Stress maintains problematic alcohol use, so it is particularly important to identify interventions that effectively reduce the desire for alcohol even in the context of high stress. Reinforcer Pathology Theory suggests that stress increases alcohol demand by inducing short-term thinking. One intervention that targets this mechanism is episodic future thinking (EFT), which involves vividly imagining personal future events and has been shown to reduce short-term thinking and accompanying preferences for immediate rewards like alcohol. These shared mechanisms suggest that EFT may be

Intertemporal Decision-Making, Nucleus Accumbens Activation, and Alcohol Use Trajectories in Young Adults With a Family History of Alcohol Use Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: A family history of alcohol use disorder (AUD) is associated with increased personal risk for alcohol misuse and AUD. Family history of AUD is also related to increased impulsivity as measured by delay discounting tasks, representing a potential mechanistic link between family history and alcohol misuse. Delay discounting tasks assess individual differences in preferences for smaller, immediate versus larger, delayed rewards, the former being linked to substance misuse. Decision-making on such tasks is underpinned by multiple neural systems, including those supporting reward valu

Rats bred for high alcohol drinking are more sensitive to delayed and probabilistic outcomes.

Alcoholics and heavy drinkers score higher on measures of impulsivity than nonalcoholics and light drinkers. This may be because of factors that predate drug exposure (e.g. genetics). This study examined the role of genetics by comparing impulsivity measures in ethanol-naive rats selectively bred based on their high [high alcohol drinking (HAD)] or low [low alcohol drinking (LAD)] consumption of ethanol. Replicates 1 and 2 of the HAD and LAD rats, developed by the University of Indiana Alcohol Research Center, completed two different discounting tasks. Delay discounting examines sensitivity to

Results from a peer recovery coach-delivered future orientation intervention for returning citizens in substance use treatment: feasibility and preliminary outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Returning citizens with substance use disorders (SUD) make numerous decisions that involve engaging in behaviors with short-term, immediate rewards (i.e. the pleasurable effects of returning to use) relative to those with longer-term, but delayed, benefits (i.e. engaging in treatment), often in the context of resource-poor and unstable environments. Successful navigation of the reentry period may require making future-oriented decisions; yet previous research suggests that incarcerated individuals and those with SUD evidence steeper rates of delay discounting, or tendency to deva

Altered intertemporal decision-making in individuals with high autistic traits.

BACKGROUND: Intertemporal decision-making integrates reward valuation, executive control, and temporal processing. Although individuals with high autistic traits (HAT) often display altered decision-making, the cognitive characteristics associated with altered intertemporal choice remain unclear. METHODS: Eighty-one participants completed an intertemporal choice task assessing preferences for sooner-smaller versus later-larger rewards. Delay discounting rates and delayed choice proportions were adopted as behavioral indicators of temporal reward preference. Measures of inhibitory control, wor

Ant1 mutant mice bridge the mitochondrial and serotonergic dysfunctions in bipolar disorder.

Although mitochondrial and serotonergic dysfunctions have been implicated in the etiology of bipolar disorder (BD), the relationship between these unrelated pathways has not been elucidated. A family of BD and chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia (CPEO) caused by a mutation of the mitochondrial adenine nucleotide translocator 1 (ANT1, SLC25A4) implicated that ANT1 mutations confer a risk of BD. Here, we sequenced ANT1 in 324 probands of NIMH bipolar disorder pedigrees and identified two BD patients carrying heterozygous loss-of-function mutations. Behavioral analysis of brain specific

Comparatively preserved impulse control in late-onset opiate users.

RATIONALE: A substantial literature indicates that in alcohol addiction aspects of impulsive decision-making are typical of individuals with an early onset of addictive behaviour problems. It is not known whether the same applies to opiate addiction, and this insight has important theoretical and clinical implications. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to examine the relationship between age at onset of addictive behaviour problems and decision-making in opiate addiction. METHODS: Ninety-three opiate-dependent, treatment-seeking individuals were divided in three groups, early, late and intermediat

Dissecting the contribution of mu and kappa opioid receptor signalling in effort and delay-related cost/benefit decision making.

RATIONALE: While novel compounds targeting mu and kappa opioid receptors show promise for treating psychiatric cognitive and motivational deficits, their underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Specifically, we lack a precise understanding of how these receptors regulate reward-related cost-benefit decision-making. OBJECTIVES: To determine the contribution of mu and kappa opioid receptor signalling in modulating effort and delay related decisions in male and female rats. METHODS: Separate cohorts of rats were well-trained on effort or delay discounting tasks or different reward magnitude discr

Type of Sexual Activity Impacts the Discounting of "Safe Sex".

Discounting theory provides a framework for understanding how behaviors, such as condom-protected sex, can lose their value. Eligible participants [N = 498; M = 44.3 years of age; White (72.3%); heterosexual (81.9%)], recruited from Prolific, completed an online survey where they indicated their willingness to engage in penile-vaginal and penile-anal intercourse with a hypothetical partner, as well as their willingness to give oral sex to and receive oral sex from that person. To determine if the discounting of skin barriers (i.e. condoms and dental dams) varied across these sexual acts, parti

Temporal discounting across three psychiatric disorders: Anorexia nervosa, obsessive compulsive disorder, and social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Temporal discounting refers to the tendency for rewards to lose value as the expected delay to receipt increases. Individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) have been found to show reduced temporal discounting rates, indicating a greater preference for delayed rewards compared to healthy peers. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and social anxiety disorder (SAD) commonly co-occur with AN, and anxiety has been related to development and prognosis of AN. We examined whether reduced temporal discounting is present across these potentially related disorders, and explored the relationship

Effects of acute and chronic caffeine on risk-taking behavior in children and adolescents.

Consumption of caffeinated beverages is associated with increased risk-taking behavior. The purpose of this study was to determine if acute caffeine administration influences risk-taking behavior in a dose-dependent manner. Participants were pre- (ages 8-9) and post-pubertal (ages 15-17) children who visited the laboratory three times and consumed a beverage containing 0, 1, or 2 mg/kg of caffeine. Thirty minutes later, participants completed the balloon analogue risk task (BART), the Iowa gambling task (IGT), and a delay discounting task. The number of balloons exploded on the BART task was s

Taking the path of least resistance now, but not later: Pushing cognitive effort into the future reduces effort discounting.

Effort discounting describes the devaluation of rewards that require effort to obtain. The present study investigated whether discounting of cognitive effort depends on how near the effort is in time. The present study also investigated whether effort discounting, and its modulation by temporal distance to the effort, might depend on need for cognition, a personality trait that describes how much one enjoys cognitively demanding tasks. Participants performed a validated effort discounting task that measured the extent to which they subjectively devalued a $20 reward when effort was required to

Statistically derived patterns of behavioral economic risk among heavy-drinking college students: A latent profile analysis.

High levels of 3 behavioral economic indices (delay discounting, alcohol demand, and proportionate substance-related reinforcement) are consistently associated with greater alcohol misuse and alcohol-related problems. However, it is unclear whether and how these variables jointly increase the risk for alcohol-related outcomes among college students who engage in heavy episodic drinking (HED; 4/5+ drinks for women/men, respectively). The current study used a person-centered approach to identify similar patterns of behavioral economic domains among heavy-drinking college students and investigate

Longitudinal characterization of impulsivity phenotypes boosts signal for genomic correlates and heritability.

Genomic correlates of impulsivity have been identified in several genome-wide association studies (GWAS) using cross-sectional designs, but no studies have investigated the molecular genetic correlates of impulsivity phenotypes using longitudinally constructed traits. In 3860 unrelated European participants in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), we constructed longitudinal phenotypes for delay discounting and impulsive personality traits (as measured by the UPPS-P impulsive behavior scales) via assessment at ages 24, 26, and 28. We conducted GWASs of impulsivity using
