Muscular compensatory mechanism in the presence of a tendinitis of the supraspinatus.

The aim of this study was to assess the electromyographic (EMG) activity of the middle part of the deltoid and of the supraspinatus muscles in subjects suffering from supraspinatus tendinitis. This experimental group (N = 10) was compared to a control group (N = 10). Each subject performed three isometric contractions for each of four pre- determined levels (5, 20, 35 and 50%) of their maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) during shoulder abduction. These contractions were carried out at angles of 0 degree and 45 degrees of abduction. The EMG signals obtained for each subject were integrated and

Quantitative assessment of muscle properties in polymyositis and dermatomyositis using high-frequency ultrasound and shear wave elastography.

BACKGROUND: Polymyositis (PM) and dermatomyositis (DM) are two common types of idiopathic inflammatory myopathy and can lead to a poor prognosis and quality of life. We designed this cross-sectional study to investigate the abilities of high-frequency ultrasound (HFUS) and shear wave elastography (SWE) to assess muscle properties in patients with PM and DM and to distinguish healthy muscles from diseased muscles with PM and DM. METHODS: A total of 60 patients (26 PM cases and 34 DM cases) and 65 matched healthy volunteers were continuously included in the case and control groups, respectively

Evaluation of a Passive Upper Limb Exoskeleton in Healthcare Workers during a Surgical Instrument Cleaning Task.

(1) Background: Healthcare workers are highly affected by work-related musculoskeletal disorders, particularly in the lower back, neck and shoulders, as their occupational tasks expose them to biomechanical constraints. One solution to prevent these musculoskeletal disorders may be the use of a passive exoskeleton as it aims to reduce muscle solicitation. However, few studies have been carried out directly in this field to assess the impact of the use of a passive upper limb exoskeleton on this population. (2) Methods: Seven healthcare workers, equipped with electromyographic sensors, performe

Rhabdomyolysis following shoulder arthroscopy.

Fluid extravasation is not uncommon after shoulder arthroscopy. We report a case of massive fluid extravasation that resulted in rhabdomyolysis and renal shutdown following routine shoulder arthroscopic surgery. Compartment pressures in the deltoid, supraspinatus, and infraspinatus were normal. Magnetic resonance imaging of the shoulder revealed extensive subcutaneous edema and high-signal changes in the entire deltoid muscle. The patient made an uneventful recovery with adequate supportive treatment and renal dialysis. Repeat imaging studies 3 months later revealed complete restoration to nor

[Clinical study of cross-reinnervation in obstetrical paralysis].

It is known that cross-reinnervation occurs when regenerating nerve fibers recombine in brachial plexus injury, especially in obstetrical paralysis. This cross-reinnervation causes abnormal contraction in many muscles simultaneously during voluntary movement. To date, however, little has been reported on its pathophysiology, severity and prognosis. In order to clarify these problems, 362 cases of obstetrical paralysis were studied clinically and electromyographically, and abnormal muscle contractions during voluntary movement were analyzed. The results are as follows; Cross-reinnervation is se

Quantification of muscular activity in the shoulder region during monotonous repetitive work.

The purpose of this preliminary study was to evaluate the degree of myoelectric activity (EMG) in the shoulder muscles during repetitive monotonous work cycles in order to assess the load on the shoulder muscles. The tasks were video recorded and the movements performed were analyzed with a direct computer-based observational method (OS-WALD). The amplitude distribution probability function (ADPF) of the surface EMG from the deltoideus lateralis and trapezius pars descendens muscles was analyzed in 6 persons working on assembly lines. For each subject, "on-site" EMG and video recordings were p

Ultrasonography of the shoulder.

Shoulder sonography has been shown to be an effective noninvasive means of detecting rotator cuff tears and biceps tendon abnormalities. The examination requires careful attention to technique and a thorough knowledge of normal gross and sonographic anatomy. Rotator cuff tears generally cause a diffuse or focal decrease in the space between the humeral head and the deltoid muscle. Therefore, tears are easiest to detect by noting abnormally close apposition of the deltoid and humeral head.

The shoulder in patients with muscular dystrophy.

Shoulder weakness and instability are not usually a major part of the clinical picture of muscular dystrophies. Problems usually do not arise until the patient is wheelchair bound, at which time assistive appliances may be required. The majority of orthopaedic intervention is confined to the rare facioscapulohumeral dystrophy. Facioscapulohumeral dystrophy causes muscular weakness of the face, shoulder girdle, and upper arm with selective sparing of the deltoid muscle. This leads to scapular winging and a marked decrease in flexion and abduction of the shoulder. As the muscles stabilizing the

Not myopathic, but autonomic changes in patients with long-COVID syndrome: a case series.

INTRODUCTION: Neurological sequelae following SARS-CoV-2 infection still represent a serious concern both for neurologists and neuroscientists. In our paper, we investigated pain, myalgia, and fatigue as symptoms in long-COVID patients with an electrophysiological approach, comprising the evaluation of sympathetic skin responses (SSRs) and quantitative electromyography (qEMG). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve patients were enrolled (mean age, 47.7 ± 11.6 years), referred to our attention because of myalgia, pain, or muscle cramps, which persisted about 6 months after the diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2

The humeral suspension technique: a novel operation for deltoid paralysis.

Isolated deltoid paralysis is a rare pathology that can occur after axillary nerve injury due to shoulder trauma or infection. This condition leads to loss of deltoid function that can cause glenohumeral instability and inferior subluxation, resulting in rotator cuff muscle fatigue and pain. To establish dynamic glenohumeral stability, a novel technique was invented. Humeral suspension is achieved using a double button implant with non-resorbable high strength cords between the acromion and humeral head. This novel technique was used in two patients with isolated deltoid paralysis due to axill
