Seasonal variations of Triatoma dimidiata demography and Trypanosoma cruzi transmission within its multi-host community in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico: Insights from an integrative SIR eco-epidemiological modelling.

Chagas disease is a zoonotic disease affecting 7 million people worldwide, mostly in Latin America. The causative agent, Trypanosoma cruzi, is transmitted by triatomine vectors feeding on a high diversity of vertebrate species. To understand its complex transmission dynamics is critical to assess disease risk and potential control strategies. We expanded a previous SI model of T. cruzi transmission in a typical synanthropic and domesticated host community into a SIR model to account for the effect of seasonal variations in the stage-structured vector demography and for the within-host parasite

Incomplete immunization uptake and associated factors among children aged 12-23 months in sub-Saharan African countries; multilevel analysis evidenced from latest demography and health survey data, 2023.

BACKGROUND: In 1974, the World Health Organization (WHO) established the Expanded Program on Immunization to control vaccine-preventable diseases, saving millions of lives annually. However, the coverage of basic vaccines recommended by the WHO in Africa was only 75%, which fell short of the goal of 90% by 2015. To formulate effective policies and implementation programs to reduce incomplete vaccination rates, it is important to conduct a study to determine the factors contributing to incomplete immunization among children aged 12-23 months. METHODS: The study was conducted in 16 sub-Saharan

Identifying the Drivers Related to Animal Reservoirs, Environment, and Socio-Demography of Human Leptospirosis in Different Community Types of Southern Chile: An Application of Machine Learning Algorithm in One Health Perspective.

Leptospirosis is a zoonosis with global public health impact, particularly in poor socio-economic settings in tropical regions. Transmitted through urine-contaminated water or soil from rodents, dogs, and livestock, leptospirosis causes over a million clinical cases annually. Risk factors include outdoor activities, livestock production, and substandard housing that foster high densities of animal reservoirs. This One Health study in southern Chile examined Leptospira serological evidence of exposure in people from urban slums, semi-rural settings, and farm settings, using the Extreme Gradient

Demography, auxology and response to recombinant human growth hormone treatment in girls with Turner's syndrome in the Kabi Pharmacia International Growth Study. International Board of the Kabi Pharmacia International Growth Study.

Demographic and auxological data were analysed from 818 girls with Turner's syndrome treated with recombinant human growth hormone (GH) and entered into the Kabi Pharmacia International Growth Study. Size at birth was low and correlated with the heights of both parents. The median age at start of GH treatment was 11.4 years and the parents had a median height SDS of -2.9. Height SDS at the start of treatment correlated with parental heights. Height velocities conformed to Turner-specific standards. The weight-for-height index increased sharply above 9 years of age. The frequency of spontaneous

Demography and survival of patients receiving treatment for chronic renal failure in Australia and New Zealand: report on dialysis and renal transplantation treatment from the Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant Registry.

There were 7,059 (403 per million) Australian patients and 1,341 (388 per million) New Zealand patients receiving renal replacement treatment at the end of 1992. Fifty-three percent and 50%, respectively, were dependent on a functioning transplant, 87% and 80%, respectively, from a cadaver donor. In Australia the majority of dialysis patients depended on hemodialysis (68%) and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) (31%); 68% of patients were dialysing at home or in a satellite (free-standing) facility. The majority (62%) of home dialysis patients used CAPD treatment. In New Zealand

Effects of mitochondria-targeted plastoquinone derivative antioxidant (SkQ1) on demography of free-breeding Campbell dwarf hamsters (Phodopus campbelli) kept in outdoor conditions. reproduction and lifespan: explanation in the framework of ultimate loads.

We studied demographic effects of the mitochondria-targeted antioxidant SkQ1 on free-breeding Campbell dwarf hamsters (Phodopus campbelli, Thomas, 1905, Rodentia, Cricetidae) in an outdoor vivarium with seasonally varying day length and temperatures. The animals were kept in pairs from their young age. We removed litters from parental cages at their age of 25 days. Experimental hamsters received daily 50 nmol/kg SkQ1 with water by oral dosing, whereas control animals received water. SkQ1 had no effect on the lifespan of either males or females in reproductive pairs. Mortality among females was

A morphometric study of antral G-cell density in a sample of adult general population: comparison of three different methods and correlation with patient demography, helicobacter pylori infection, histomorphology and circulating gastrin levels.

Helicobacter pylori infection has been linked to hypergastrinemia and either decreased or normal G-cell content in the antral mucosa. To clarify this controversial issue, we quantitatively determined antral G-cell content on the same biopsy specimens with three different methods and examined whether these methods are intercorrelated and the relation of these methods to plasma gastrin concentrations, demography, the occurrence of H. pylori infection and chronic gastritis. Gastric antral mucosal biopsy sections from 273 adults (188 with and 85 without H pylori infection) from a general populatio

Structured models of infectious disease: inference with discrete data.

The usage of structured population models can make substantial contributions to public health, particularly for infections where clinical outcomes vary over age. There are three theoretical challenges in implementing such analyses: (i) developing an appropriate framework that models both demographic and epidemiological transitions; (ii) parameterizing the framework, where parameters may be based on data ranging from the biological course of infection, basic patterns of human demography, specific characteristics of population growth, and details of vaccination regimes implemented; (iii) evaluat

Population Patterns and Dynamics of Ilisha elongata (Clupeiformes: Pristigasteridae) Revealed by Target Enrichment Data.

The elongate ilisha (Ilisha elongata) is an important commercial species found along the Northwestern Pacific Coast. A sharp decline in the annual catch of I. elongata over recent decades implies a concerning situation regarding its fishery stocks. Nonetheless, inadequate knowledge of the genetic diversity, population structure, and historical demography of this species has hindered the establishment of sustainable fishery policies and appropriate conservation measures. In this study, the genetic structure and population demography of I. elongata stocks along the Northwestern Pacific Coast wer

Impact of improving outcome guidance in gynaecological cancer on squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva in the West Midlands, UK.

This study aimed to assess the benefits and outcomes of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the vulva managed in a cancer centre post-centralisation of cancer care in the UK. A retrospective study was performed to evaluate the demography and management outcomes of SCC of the vulva in a regional gynaecological cancer centre. The results were then compared with the Rhodes et al. (1998) population-based study. Over the years, disease demography remained largely unchanged. However, centralisation of cancer care has resulted in significant changes in the pattern of care. The number of cases managed ha

When to vaccinate a fluctuating wildlife population: Is timing everything?

Wildlife vaccination is an important tool for managing the burden of infectious disease in human populations, domesticated livestock and various iconic wildlife. Although substantial progress has been made in the field of vaccine designs for wildlife, there is a gap in our understanding of how to time wildlife vaccination, relative to host demography, to best protect a population. We use a mathematical model and computer simulations to assess the outcomes of vaccination campaigns that deploy vaccines once per annual population cycle.Optimal timing of vaccination is an important consideration in

A Demographic Study of Aste-Béon (Ossau Valley, Bearn), a Small Community From French Western Pyrenees in the 19th Century.

OBJECTIVES: To decipher the social behaviors and public health status of a 19th-century small Western Pyrenean community using various historical demography data. METHODS: From censuses, civil and parish registers of births, marriages, and deaths/burials, migration archives, and administrative records, we analyzed a series of demographic parameters in the village of Aste-Béon between 1801 and 1900. RESULTS: Acknowledging the limitations of such a historical demography approach (especially losses of data and underreporting of deaths of very young individuals), this study enabled us to draw a

Seasonal changes in melatonin concentrations in female Iberian red deer (Cervus elaphus hispanicus).

This Section considered the immense challenges presented by the changing demography of populations (in particular, cross-boundary flow), changing oral and dental disease trends. It also considered the difficulties of gathering data on such information. It then considered how these challenges may affect the education of the dental team in the future. The Section considered the concept of the 'global village' as a representation of the changing world demography. We were at pains to recognize that our role was in considering both emerging and established market economies. In fact, a major part of

Genetic consequences of being a dwarf: do evolutionary changes in life-history traits influence gene flow patterns in populations of the world's smallest goldenrod?

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Contrasting life-history traits can evolve through generations of dwarf plant ecotypes, yet such phenotypic changes often involve decreased plant size and reproductive allocation, which can configure seed dispersal patterns and, subsequently, population demography. Therefore, evolutionary transitions to dwarfism can represent good study systems to test the roles of life-history traits in population demography by comparing genetic structure between related but phenotypically divergent ecotypes. METHODS: In this study, we examined an ecotypic taxon pair of the world's small

ESRD due to Multiple Myeloma in the United States, 2001-2010.

Although management of multiple myeloma has changed substantially in the last decade, it is unknown whether the burden of ESRD due to multiple myeloma has changed, or whether survival of patients with multiple myeloma on RRT has improved. Regarding ESRD due to multiple myeloma necessitating RRT in the United States, we evaluated temporal trends between 2001 and 2010 for demography-adjusted incidence ratios, relative to rates in 2001-2002, and mortality hazards from RRT initiation, relative to hazards in 2001-2002. In this retrospective cohort study, we used the US Renal Data System database (n
