Repair characteristics of horizontal root fracture: a case report.

Radicular fractures in permanent teeth are uncommon injuries among dental traumas, comprising 0.5-7% of the cases. Fracture occurs most often in the middle-third of the root and rarely at the apical-third. The present paper reports a clinical case of a horizontal radicular fracture located between the middle- and apical-third of a upper left-central incisor followed-up for over 3 years. The tooth was extracted owing to periodontal reasons. Histomorphologically, it showed pulp-vitality preservation and root healing by hard-tissue deposition.

A secondary ion mass spectroscopic study of the elemental composition pattern in rat incisor dental enamel during different stages of ameloblast differentiation.

In most earlier studies on the elemental composition pattern of dental enamel, a picture is presented which describes a limited region. In this study, estimates of the incorporation of some critical elements into enamel were correlated with the differentiation stages of the ameloblasts through out the whole tooth. Elemental analyses of rat incisor dental enamel during the secretory, transitional and maturation phases were performed using two different modes of secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). The results were presented as ion images and three-dimensional spatial resolution graphs. In th

Human pulpal response to hydroxyapatite and a calcium hydroxide material as direct capping agents.

Forty maxillary and four mandibular first premolars that were to be extracted for orthodontic reasons were used in this study to evaluate human pulpal response to hydroxyapatite and Dycal as direct capping materials. After the postoperative periods of 2 days, 30 days and, 60 days, teeth were extracted and prepared for the histologic examination. The results of this study showed that hydroxyapatite does not induce hard tissue bridging at the exposure site in human dental pulp. No hard tissue bridging at the exposure site was observed in any of the teeth capped with hydroxyapatite. Moderate infi

Review of calcium hydroxide.

Calcium hydroxide is a material which has been used for a variety of purposes since its introduction into dentistry in the early part of the twentieth century. In its pure form, the substance has a high pH, and its dental use relates chiefly to its ability to stimulate mineralization, and also to its antibacterial properties. A range of products has been formulated with different therapeutic actions, the effects of which are partially dependent upon the tissue to which they are applied. The material is reviewed under the following general headings: biochemical actions; dental formulation; uses

Ways of enhancing pulp preservation by stepwise excavation--a systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: The best possible methods and materials in stepwise excavation for deep caries in permanent teeth were investigated. The review considers the questions from many aspects including clinical success, effects of reducing cariogenic bacteria, possibility of hardening softened dentin, and likelihood of generating tertiary dentin. DATA: This systematic review includes the use of data from randomized controlled trials, controlled clinical trials as well as from case series in which pulp exposure resulted following the treatment and removal of deep caries. Only studies of caries in perman

Bovine deciduous dentine is more susceptible to osteoclastic resorption than permanent dentine: results of quantitative analyses.

Many clinical reports suggest that deciduous teeth exhibit a greater susceptibility to resorption than permanent ones. To examine the difference between deciduous and permanent dentine in their susceptibility to osteoclastic resorption, osteoclast-like cells (OCLs) were cultured on deciduous and permanent dentine slices. The number, area, depth, and volume of resorption pits were then measured, using image-analyzing systems. We measured the level of degraded collagen (cross-linked N-telopeptide of type I collagen; NTx) in culture medium using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The l

Sealing properties of a self-etching primer system to normal caries-affected and caries-infected dentin.

PURPOSE: To compare the ability of an experimental antibacterial self-etching primer adhesive system to seal exposure sites in normal, caries-affected and caries-infected human dentin. METHODS: 30 extracted human third molars were used within 1 month of extraction. 10 intact normal teeth comprised the normal group. 20 teeth with occlusal caries that radiographically extended halfway to the pulp were excavated using caries-detector solution (CDS) and a #4 round carbide bur in a slowspeed handpiece. Half of those teeth were fully excavated free of CDS-stained material without exposing the pulp,

Enhanced surface properties and wettability of zirconia-hydroxyapatite-poly(acrylic acid) nanocomposites for dental applications.

INTRODUCTION: Dentine demineralization is a key factor in dental caries and structural deterioration, necessitating the development of effective restorative approaches. Hydroxyapatite (HA) and zirconia (Zr) are widely used in dentistry due to their biocompatibility and mechanical strength; however, their individual remineralization potential is limited by poor surface characteristics. Polyacrylic acid (PAA), a biocompatible polymer, can be incorporated as a surface modifier to enhance the remineralization ability and interfacial properties of HA-Zr based restorative materials. The in vitro assessment of the degree of monomer conversion, biaxial flexural strength, and mineral precipitation on demineralised dentine of novel resin composite containing monocalcium phosphate monohydrate and polylysine.

OBJECTIVE: The development of ion-releasing resin composites is expected to reduce the risk of secondary caries. This study compared the degree of monomer conversion, biaxial flexural strength/modulus, elemental release, and remineralisation potential of a novel ion-releasing dental composite (Renewal MI) containing monocalcium phosphate monohydrate and polylysine. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The degree of monomer conversion after light curing for 20 s was determined (n = 8). The biaxial flexural strength and modulus after immersion in water for 24 h (n = 8) were evaluated. Additionally, the relea

Histone acetylation promotes FKBP5 to increase reparative dentin formation in pulp repair.

IMPORTANCE: A well-formed dentin bridge isolates irritants and prevents bacterial penetration into the remaining pulp tissue, which is essential for pulp regeneration. The existing literature on promoting reparative dentin formation mostly focuses on the effects of pulp-capping materials but lacks investigations into the underlying mechanisms. OBJECTIVE: To identify potential targets for enhancing reparative dentin formation as well as the epigenetic mechanisms underlying these effects. DESIGN: Laboratory-based study combining multi-omics sequencing, epigenetic assays, in vitro FK506-binding

Influence of substrate nature and immobilization of implanted dentin matrix components during induction of reparative dentinogenesis.

The biological effects of isolated soluble dentin extracellular matrix components on the induction of reparative dentinogenesis in exposed cavities in ferret canine teeth have been shown to be blocked by immobilizing the extracellular matrix components on nitrocellulose or Millipore membranes during implantation. This contrasts with the picture of induction of odontoblast-like cell differentiation and reparative dentin deposition on existing insoluble dentin matrix of the exposure walls when the extracellular matrix components are implanted in lyophilized form. These data indicate the importan

Pulp reactions to restoration of experimentally induced crown fractures.

OBJECTIVES: Reattachment of the avulsed enamel-dentine coronal fragment to the remaining tooth structure has become an accepted clinical alternative to a resin composite build-up for the restoration of crown fractured teeth. Since little knowledge exists as to the pulpal response to this procedure, this study was designed to observe the condition of the pulp following experimentally induced crown fracture and restoration in monkeys. METHODS: Experiments were conducted in eight young green Vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops). In all, 64 fractured incisors were investigated. Light microscop

Restorations after selective caries removal: 5-Year randomized trial.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the survival of restorations placed in deep caries lesions after selective caries removal to soft dentin (SCRSD) over a 5-year period. A secondary aim was to investigate whether the material (amalgam or resin composite) affected the survival of restorations. METHODS: This study used data derived from a multicenter randomized controlled clinical trial (Clinical trials registration NCT00887952). Inclusion criteria were: patients with permanent molars presenting occlusal or proximal deep caries lesions (≥1/2 of the dentin thickness on radiographic examination), positive res

Tooth analyses of sources and intensity of lead exposure in children.

The sources and intensity of lead exposure in utero and in early childhood were determined using stable lead isotopic ratios and lead concentrations of incisal and cervical sections of deciduous teeth from 30 exposed and nonexposed children from the Broken Hill lead mining community in Australia. Incisal sections, consisting mostly of enamel, generally have low amounts of lead and isotopic compositions consistent with those expected in the mother during pregnancy. Cervical sections, consisting mostly of dentine with secondary dentine removed by resorption and reaming, generally have higher amo

Advanced biomimetic mineralization approaches for enamel and dentin regeneration: a review.

Biomimetic mineralization represents a promising strategy to replicate the natural processes of amelogenesis and dentinogenesis through proteins, peptides, ion delivery systems, enzyme-mimicking catalysts, and nanotechnology-based materials. Restoring enamel and dentin represents a major challenge in restorative dentistry due to their complex hierarchical architecture and limited intrinsic repair capacity. Conventional restorative materials can restore function but often fail to reproduce the mechanical, aesthetic, and biological properties of natural tissues and are prone to long-term degrada

Regeneration and Repair in Endodontics-A Special Issue of the Regenerative Endodontics-A New Era in Clinical Endodontics.

Caries is the most common cause of pulp-periapical disease. When the pulp tissue involved in caries becomes irreversibly inflamed and progresses to necrosis, the treatment option is root canal therapy because the infected or non-infected necrotic pulp tissue in the root canal system is not accessible to the host's innate and adaptive immune defense mechanisms and antimicrobial agents. Therefore, the infected or non-infected necrotic pulp tissue must be removed from the canal space by pulpectomy. As our knowledge in pulp biology advances, the concept of treatment of pulpal and periapical diseas
