BACKGROUND: Individuals who are edentulous have a lower intake of fruit, vegetables, fiber, and protein compared with their dentate counterparts because tooth loss is accompanied by a decrease in ability to chew. Whether or not a combination of prosthetic rehabilitation and simple dietary advice produces improvement in dietary intake among edentulous persons is unclear. We aim to investigate the effect of a simultaneous combination of simple dietary advice delivered by dentists and provision of new complete dentures on dietary intake in edentulous individuals who request new dentures.

The results are reported on 34 edentulous patients, who underwent interposed autogenous bone graft augmentation in the symphysis of the mandible, combined with bone-hydroxylapatite onlay augmentation of the area posterior to the mental foramina. Two to four implants were placed in the grafted symphysis after 3-5 months. An overdenture was constructed three months later. The follow-up period ranged from one to seven years. An average loss of mandibular bone height of 10-13% was observed. The data provided no evidence of a further time-dependent resorption from two-and-half to seven years.

On the basis of data from a questionnaire study of 3000 inhabitants of Orebro County, Sweden, aged 45-69 years, the relative importance of various socioeconomic factors for dental conditions were analyzed in stepwise logistic regression models. PURPOSE: A lingualized occlusion (LO) for complete dentures reduces lateral inferences and occlusal force contacts and direction; thus, LO is theorized to be more suitable for patients with compromised ridges than fully bilateral balanced articulation (FBBA).
