Vision anomalies and reading skill: a meta-analysis of the literature.

We report a meta-analysis of studies of the relation of vision anomalies to reading skill. Meta-analysis is a quantitative technique for combining the results of multiple studies that reduces the subjectivity of literature reviews. The results of the analysis of 34 studies of vision anomalies and reading skill that met the criteria for inclusion in the meta-analysis showed that hyperopia, exophoria at near, vertical phoria, anisometropia, and aniseikonia are associated with below average reading performance. Myopia and esophoria and esophoria at far are associated with average and above averag

Lateral short-term prism adaptation in clinical evaluation.

Data were obtained from a normal clinical population regarding heterophoria, associated phoria and short-term prism adaptation in an attempt to differentiate between those subjects with symptoms and those without. Correlation between heterophoria, associated phoria, prism adaptation and symptoms was low. A short prism-adaptation test was found to be of little value in diagnosing decompensated heterophoria in the general population. Subjects diagnosed as having decompensated heterophoria did not have an abnormal short-term prism-adaptation system. The clinical implications of these findings are

The Influence of Overminus Lens Therapy on Control of Intermittent Exotropia: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Clinical Trials.

BACKGROUND: Intermittent exotropia (IXT) is the most common type of strabismus, overminus lens (OML) therapy is frequently prescribed to treat IXT. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of OML and observation in the treatment of IXT. METHOD: An exhaustive search of the literature in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases was performed until July 2022. No language restrictions were used. The literature was rigorously screened according to eligibility criteria. Weighted mean differences and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated.

Through-Focus Response of Extended Depth of Focus Intraocular Lenses.

PURPOSE: To investigate extended depth of focus intraocular lenses (EDOF IOLs), intended to extend the depth of field after cataract surgery in a comparative study at the optical bench. METHODS: An optical bench with either green or white light was used for this study. The artificial cornea used exhibited a spherical aberration of 0.2 µm. Examinations of the following lenses with a pupil opening of 3 and 4.5 mm were carried out: AcrySof IQ Vivity (Alcon Laboratories, Inc), Isopure (PhysIOL), Tecnis Eyhance (Johnson & Johnson), Vivinex Impress (Hoya Surgical Optics), and xact (Santen). Effect of the Control Ability on Stereopsis Recovery of Intermittent Exotropia in Children.

PURPOSE: To explore the relationship between ocular position control ability and stereopsis recovery in children with intermittent exotropia, and to analyze the influencing factors of distance stereopsis recovery. METHODS: In this retrospective study, 78 children with small angle intermittent exotropia received vision training for 3 months. All patients were examined for distance stereopsis with the synoptophore and for near stereopsis with the Titmus stereogram before and after the training. The patients were divided into low and high Newcastle Control Score (NCS) groups. The stereopsis of t

Matching the Patient to the Intraocular Lens: Preoperative Considerations to Optimize Surgical Outcomes.

The intraocular lens (IOL) selection process for patients requires a complex and objective assessment of patient-specific ocular characteristics, including the quality and quantity of corneal astigmatism, health of the ocular surface, and other ocular comorbidities. Potential issues that could be considered complications after surgery, including dry eye disease, anterior or epithelial basement membrane dystrophy, Salzmann nodular degeneration, and pterygium, should be addressed proactively. Aspheric IOLs are designed to eliminate the positive spherical aberration added by traditional IOLs to t

The modified frisby stereotest.

BACKGROUND: The Frisby stereotest commonly is used in clinical practice to estimate stereoacuity. Assessment of the presence or absence of stereopsis is valuable particularly in toddlers because of the difficulties encountered in this age group with assessment of other aspects of visual function, such as monocular visual acuities. METHODS: The present study describes two modifications to the Frisby stereotest: 1) the introduction of a nonstereo practice plate; and 2) the use of an auditory "reward" for correct identification of the target. These modifications aim to increase the success rate

Temporal aspects of depth contrast.

Depth contrast is a contrasting change in the depth of a feature that results from changes in the disparities of other objects in the field of view, even though the disparity of the original feature remains unchanged. Depth contrast effects decrease during continuous viewing of the stimuli and may disappear altogether after several minutes unless the disparities of the inducing features change with time. This fading occurs whenever the inducing features have constant disparity, whether they are stationary or oscillating laterally. Depth contrast effects occur whenever the inducing features are

Clinicolegal considerations of monovision.

Patients who wear monovision contact lenses must be carefully selected, properly fitted, and adequately informed of the risks of reduced visual acuity and stereopsis. A demonstration of the visual effects of monovision should be used to determine the adaptability of patients to this form of lens wear, and patients should be advised to undergo a gradual adaptation to their lenses. Negligence in the prescribing, fitting, follow-up of these patients can create liability for the contact lens practitioner. Patients must be warned of the risks of monovision lens wear, as required by the doctrine of

The effect on fixation disparity and associated heterophoria of reading at an abnormally close distance.

It is well established that prism stress on binocular vision produces fixation disparity. It is therefore suggested that fixation disparity is a sign of stress on binocular vision. The authors have previously looked at the stress caused by reading in reduced levels of illumination, and found that the average fixation disparity and associated heterophoria become more exophoric. In this paper the effect on fixation disparity and associated heterophoria of reading at an abnormally close distance is reported. It was found that in 50 young adults fixation disparity and associated heterophoria incre

[Functional aniseikonia: clinical study of 110 cases (author's transl)].

A clinical study was conducted in 110 cases of subjective aniseikonia, a syndrome that is often neglected. After in practice summarizing the different distortions composing the phenomenon of aniseikonia, a description of the prototype apparatus used for the experiments is given: it is eikonometric stereo-projector the originality of which lies in the measuring system, constituted by the projected stereograms. Three parameters were studied: depth-perception, peerception threshold of anseiikonic disparity, and value of the found aniseikonia. The results are presented in relation to 3 groups of s

The visual representation of 3D object orientation in parietal cortex.

An accurate representation of three-dimensional (3D) object orientation is essential for interacting with the environment. Where and how the brain visually encodes 3D object orientation remains unknown, but prior studies suggest the caudal intraparietal area (CIP) may be involved. Here, we develop rigorous analytical methods for quantifying 3D orientation tuning curves, and use these tools to the study the neural coding of surface orientation. Specifically, we show that single neurons in area CIP of the rhesus macaque jointly encode the slant and tilt of a planar surface, and that across the p

Holmes and Horrax (1919) revisited: impaired binocular fusion as a cause of "flat vision" after right parietal brain damage - a case study.

The complete loss of binocular depth perception ("flat vision") was first thoroughly described by Holmes and Horrax (1919), and has been occasionally reported thereafter in patients with bilateral posterior-parietal lesions. Though partial spontaneous recovery occurred in some cases, the precise cause(s) of this condition remained obscure for almost a century. Here, we describe a unique patient (EH) with a large right-sided occipito-parietal hemorrhage showing a complete loss of visual depth perception for several months post-stroke. EH could well simultaneously describe multiple visual object

A role of 3-D surface-from-motion cues in motion-induced blindness.

Motion-induced blindness (MIB), the illusory disappearance of local targets against a moving mask, has been attributed to both low-level stimulus-based effects and high-level processes, involving selection between local and more global stimulus contexts. Prior work shows that MIB is modulated by binocular disparity-based depth-ordering cues. We assessed whether the depth effect is specific to disparity by studying how monocular 3-D surface from motion affects MIB. Monocular kinetic depth cues were used to create a global 3-D hourglass with concave and convex surfaces. MIB increased for station

Neural basis of 3-D shape aftereffects.

We used selective adaptation to identify the neural mechanisms responsible for 3-D shape perception from orientation flows in retinal images [Li, A., & Zaidi, Q. (2000). Perception of three-dimensional shape from texture is based on patterns of oriented energy. Vision Research 40 (2), 217-242)]. Three-dimensional shape adaptation could involve stages from photoreceptors to non-oriented retinal cells, oriented cells in striate cortex, and extra-striate cells that respond to 3-D slants. To psychophysically isolate the relevant stage, we used 3-D adapting stimuli created from real and illusory or

Visual field defects for unidirectional and oscillatory motion in depth.

Visual fields for oscillatory motion in depth were recorded for 21 subjects. Near fields were different from far fields in 8 and similar in 11 subjects. Visual fields for unidirectional motion in depth were recorded for 16 subjects for near and far disparities. Some subjects had fields that differed for approaching versus receding motion in depth and/or for near versus far disparities. In particular, for near disparities, approaching versus receding motion gave fields that were different in 5 and similar 7 subjects; for far disparities, approaching versus receding motion gave fields that were
