Cyberpsychology & behavior : the impact of the Internet, multimedia and virtual reality on behavior and society2002eng
The fear of speaking is often cited as the world's most common social phobia. The rapid growth of computer technology enabled us to use virtual reality (VR) for the treatment of the fear of public speaking. There have been two techniques used to construct a virtual environment for the treatment of the fear of public speaking: model-based and movie-based. Virtual audiences and virtual environments made by model-based technique are unrealistic and unnatural. The movie-based technique has a disadvantage in that each virtual audience cannot be controlled respectively, because all virtual audiences

BACKGROUND: There is very little information on long-term follow-up of social phobia.
METHODS: A consecutive series of 70 patients satisfying the DSM-IV criteria for social phobia was treated in an out-patient clinic with behavioural methods based on exposure homework. Forty-five patients were judged to be remitted after eight individual sessions of psychotherapy. A 2 to 12 year (median = 6 years) follow-up was performed. Survival analysis was selected to characterize the clinical course of patients. Assessments were performed before treatment, at the end of therapy, after 1 year, and subsequ

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of long-term outcome studies of panic disorder that exceed a 2-year follow-up. The aim of the study was to evaluate the long-term follow-up of patients with panic disorder with agoraphobia treated according to a standardized protocol.
METHODS: A consecutive series of 200 patients satisfying the DSM-IV criteria for panic disorder with agoraphobia was treated in an out-patient clinic with behavioural methods based on exposure homework. One hundred and thirty-six patients became panic free after 12 sessions of psychotherapy and 132 were available for follow-up. A 2

In a randomized controlled trial, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) for panic disorder with agoraphobia (PDA) was compared with both waiting list and credible attention-placebo control groups. EMDR was significantly better than waiting list for some outcome measures (questionnaire, diary, and interview measures of severity of anxiety, panic disorder, and agoraphobia) but not for others (panic attack frequency and anxious cognitions). However, low power and, for panic frequency, floor effects may account for these negative results. Differences between EMDR and the attention-p

This study investigated the long-term follow-up effectiveness of (cognitive-) behavioural group and individual treatments for generalized social phobia. Patients were reassessed 18 months after they had finished one of the following treatment packages: (1) exposure in vivo; (2) cognitive therapy followed by exposure in vivo; or (3) a cognitive-behavioural treatment in which both strategies were integrated from the start. Half of the patients were individually treated, the other half in a group. Self-report assessments were held before and after treatment and at 3-month and 18-month follow-ups.

This investigation examined the techniques for reducing visually-induced motion sickness. On the basis of their responses to a motion sickness history questionnaire, 32 subjects were selected and assigned to 1 of 4 groups such that the groups were matched on the basis of their ability to tolerate visually-induced apparent motion (VM). One group received 10 sessions of desensitization training only (DT); a second group received 10 sessions of cognitive therapy only (CT); a third group received 10 sessions of combined desensitization and cognitive therapy treatment (CG); and a fourth group recei

This review will focus only on those paradigms for treatment of panic states with agoraphobia. Until recently the behaviour therapy literature has completely ignored panic disorder and has focused exclusively on the agoraphobic aspect of this syndrome. To summarize the behavioural therapy of panic disorder and agoraphobia, it appears that exposure is in the short run the most effective behavioural paradigm in agoraphobia. However, when contrasted with cognitive approaches it does not appear to be as effective in the treatment of panic disorder. In conclusion, it is unclear whether we can speak

A double-blind study was carried out on 40 agoraphobic and socially phobic patients, matched, then randomly assigned to one of four treatment groups; phenelzine-exposure, phenelzine-no exposure, placebo-exposure, and placebo-no exposure. Exposure consisted of encouraging the patient to face the phobic situation a predetermined number of times. Assessments, made at the beginning and end of 8 weeks of therapy and 8 weeks thereafter, showed that the phobia ratings of groups decreased significantly. The combined exposure group improved significantly more than the combined no exposure group during

A newly devised therapy technique to desensitize individuals for body image anxiety arising from conversion symptoms and psychophysiologic disorders is outlined. One application involves the projective use of inkblots with high anatomical content which provide a source of visual input to stimulate somatic images in consciousness. When these are activated in a state of relaxation the anxiety content of the pathologic anatomical imagery is reduced. A case history involving desensitization treatment for a psychoneurotic patient's psychophysiologic symptom of premature ejaculation is cited. It is

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to offer a comprehensive, data-based explanation of the relationship between hyperventilation and panic disorder linking CO2 hypersensitivity, cognitive/behavioral factors, and the respiratory effects of antipanic pharmacologic and psychological treatments.
METHOD: The authors conducted a computerized search of MEDLINE for relevant articles.
RESULTS: Some panic patients have a chronic, subtle respiratory disturbance. Acute hyperventilation is neither necessary nor sufficient for panic to occur. Respiratory abnormalities in panic patients may adaptive

BACKGROUND: Comorbid borderline personality disorder (BPD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) predict poorer treatment outcomes. Available treatments for BPD and psychological trauma are often phase-based, first ensuring stabilization of dysregulated behaviors and emotions and later focusing on treating trauma. This study investigates the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of combining dialectical behavioral therapy group skills training (DBT-ST), consisting of mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal-effectiveness skills, with eye movement

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic raised unprecedented challenges for frontline healthcare workers and emergency volunteers, leading to significant psychological distress. To address these issues, EMDR-IGTP (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing-Integrative Group Treatment Protocol) was proposed as a trauma-focused group intervention. Although its efficacy is widely documented, little is known, from a qualitative perspective, about the experiences of frontliners who underwent this treatment during the pandemic. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the experiences of frontline prof

BACKGROUND: About 40% of rape victims develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) within three months after the assault. Considering the high personal and societal impact of PTSD, there is an urgent need for early (i.e. within three months after the incident) interventions to reduce post-traumatic stress in victims of rape.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness of early intervention with eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy to reduce symptoms of post-traumatic stress, feelings of guilt and shame, sexual dysfunction, and other psychological dysfunction (i.e. general

This study explored the role of threat and contamination-related associations in spider phobia. Treatment-seeking (n=60) and non-phobic (n=30) individuals completed threat and disgust-related Implicit Association Tests (IATs). Phobic individuals were assessed before and after one session of 2.5h in vivo exposure. To differentiate actual treatment effects from test-retest effects on the IAT, half of the phobic individuals completed the IAT twice before treatment. Results showed that: (1) threat and contamination associations similarly distinguished between phobic and non-phobic participants on

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic pain disorder characterized by sensory, motor, autonomic, and trophic disturbances, often following trauma, surgery, or neurologic injury. We present a diagnostically complex case with overlapping features of both type I and type II CRPS in a 64-year-old man with metastatic lung adenocarcinoma involving the central nervous system (CNS). The patient developed neuropathic pain, weakness, and edema in the left upper and lower extremities following trauma, radiation, and cervical and lumbosacral radiculopathies. Although his presentation met the B

Difficulties of biological, psychological, social and legal nature may be seen involved in the treatment of drug-addict persons. In this study, the major models used in the treatment are analysed, so as so one may arrived at a new model which will better integrate the various factors involved. The major models may be brought down to three: the medical psychiatric model which emphasizes the biological dependency on drugs and which equates drug addiction and "mental illness"; the behavioristic model which utilizes directive conditioning and desensitizing techniques, as well as educational and su
