Group therapy for incarcerated women who experienced interpersonal violence: a pilot study.

This study evaluated effectiveness of group therapy for incarcerated women with histories of childhood sexual and/or physical abuse. The intervention was based on a two-stage model of trauma treatment and included Dialectical Behavior Therapy skills and writing assignments. We randomly assigned 24 participants to group treatment (13 completed) and 25 to a no-contact comparison condition (18 completed). We evaluated treatment effects, using the Beck Depression Inventory, Inventory of Interpersonal Problems, and Trauma Symptom Inventory. The data demonstrate significant reductions in PTSD, mood,

Contextualist Perspectives in the Treatment of Antisocial Behaviors and Offending: A Comparative Review of FAP, ACT, DBT, and MDT.

This article presents a comparative review of the application of four contextualist therapies in the treatment of antisocial behavior and offending. The therapies reviewed are functional analytic psychotherapy (FAP), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and mode deactivation therapy (MDT). A descriptive and comparative review was conducted through a search carried out in both general and specific databases related to each therapy. We included a total of 44 studies treating any type of antisocial behavior or offending. Results show that these intervention

Psychological Treatment of Persistent Genital Arousal Disorder/Genitopelvic Dysesthesia Using an Integrative Approach.

Persistent genital arousal disorder/genitopelvic dysesthesia (PGAD/GPD) is characterized by persistent, unwanted physiological genital arousal (i.e., sensitivity, fullness, and/or swelling) in the absence of sexual excitement or desire which can persist for hours to days and causes significant impairment in psychosocial well-being (e.g., distress) and daily functioning. The etiology and course of PGAD/GPD is still relatively unknown and, unsurprisingly, there are not yet clear evidence-based treatment recommendations for those suffering from PGAD/GPD. We present the case of a 58-year-old woman

Radically open dialectical behaviour therapy adapted for adolescents: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Overcontrol is a transdiagnostic cluster of traits associated with excessive psychological, behavioural and social inhibitory control. It is associated with psychiatric diagnoses of depression, restrictive eating disorders and/or obsessive-compulsive personality disorder. Radically Open Dialectical Behaviour Therapy is a transdiagnostic treatment for maladaptive overcontrol. This case series evaluates an adolescent adaption (RO-A) for a transdiagnostic group of adolescents identified as overcontrolled. METHODS: Twenty-eight adolescents were consecutively referred for RO-A from two

Applications of dialectical behavioural therapy in the perinatal period: A scoping review.

Psychological distress is the most common complication of pregnancy. High-risk concerns can include severe emotion dysregulation, suicidality and self-injury, and health risk behaviours, which bear substantial consequences for caregivers and families. Yet, effective, comprehensive interventions for high-risk caregivers have received limited attention. Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) is a frontline treatment for such concerns. Accordingly, we conducted a scoping review on the implementation of DBT in the perinatal period. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyse

Reflective functioning and its potential to moderate the efficacy of manualized psychodynamic therapies versus other treatments for borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Impaired reflective functioning (RF) is common among patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD). Transference-focused psychotherapy (TFP) has been demonstrated to improve RF compared to other common BPD treatments. If RF reflects a treatment mechanism for TFP, differences in pretreatment RF may also serve as a prescriptive factor for TFP's effects. METHOD: A total of 194 patients with BPD were randomized across two clinical trials to receive TFP (n = 83), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT; n = 31), supportive psychodynamic therapy (SPT; n = 28), or an enhanced treatment a

Symptom reduction in DBT-informed partial hospital, intensive outpatient, and step-down programs: Mindfulness matters.

Preliminary evidence suggests the efficacy of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to reduce clinical symptoms in Partial Hospital (PH) programs. However, less is known about DBT in Intensive Outpatient (IOP) programs, or in PH to IOP step-down models. The current study examined changes in depression, anxiety, stress, hopelessness, and mindfulness skills acquisition, from intake and discharge data of clients at a southeastern behavioral health clinic in the United States. The sample included 146 clients, 65.75% female (ages M = 33.88, SD = 12.34), who attended either a DBT-PH, -IOP, or -PH to IO

Unraveling dynamic factors in Dialectic Behavioural Treatment for Adolescents (DBT-A): A study protocol.

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy for Adolescents (DBT-A) is an effective treatment for adolescents exhibiting features of borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, some do not benefit, potentially leading to major negative outcomes later in life. Previous quantitative studies have highlighted the importance of dynamic (changeable) factors in determining treatment success, including the therapeutic alliance, emotional dynamics between therapist and adolescent, and the motivation of those involved. Nevertheless, the specific contribution of these factors to the therapeutic process and perce

Optimizing psychological interventions for trichotillomania (hair-pulling disorder): an update on current empirical status.

Trichotillomania (hair-pulling disorder) is a psychiatric condition characterized by a persistent habit of pulling out one's hair. In treatment-seeking populations, hair-pulling disorder can be severe, chronic, and difficult to treat. In the early 1970s, behavioral interventions (eg, habit reversal training) were developed and proved effective in treating chronic hair-pulling for many individuals. In order to further increase treatment efficacy and improve long-term outcome, several authors have developed augmented treatment protocols that combine traditional behavioral strategies with other c

Expanding Access to Specialized Mental Health Services for Youths in Crisis Through a State-Provider-University Partnership.

Self-injurious thoughts and behaviors (SITBs) pose a clear risk to adolescents' health and well-being. Although established treatments (e.g., dialectical behavior therapy [DBT]) for youths experiencing SITB exist, numerous challenges reduce the feasibility of delivering such treatments in community-based settings. To address the need for increased access to specialized mental health treatments among youths, a state, provider, and university partnership was developed to codesign and implement a DBT-informed clinical training model within the existing community-based mental health provider teams

A study on the effects of combined DBT and STEPPS interventions for adolescents with non-suicidal self-injury: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether an integrated Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Systems Training for Emotional Predictability and Problem Solving (DBT + STEPPS) programme is more effective than DBT alone or conventional treatment in reducing non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and improving emotion regulation, anxiety, and depressive symptoms among adolescents with depression and NSSI. METHODS: This study recruited 192 adolescent patients with non-suicidal self-injury between March 2024 and February 2025, and they were randomly divided into the Control Group (conventional intervention), Interventio

Mindful attention as a mechanism underlying non-suicidal self-injury: evidence from a longitudinal intervention trial.

BACKGROUND: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) represents a significant public health issue, yet its underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. Theoretical models posit attentional deficits as key potential factors, but most supporting evidence has been cross-sectional. This study aimed to provide longitudinal evidence for the role of mindful attention, a mindfulness-related attentional process, in NSSI by leveraging data from a randomized controlled trial. METHODS: A total of 196 individuals with NSSI were randomized to 13 weeks of dialectical behavior therapy skills training (DBT-ST; n =

Life experienced as worth living and beyond: a qualitative study of the pathways to recovery and flourishing amongst individuals treated for borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is recognized as a leading evidence-based treatment, effective in reducing symptoms of borderline personality disorder (BPD), as well as co-occurring clinical syndromes. However, symptom remission may not be the same as a life experienced as worth living. The purpose of the study was to understand, from the perspective of individuals with lived experience, the concepts of recovery, life experienced as worth living and flourishing after treatment for BPD, and to describe the pathways to wellness after symptom remission. METHODS: Semi-structured i

Preventing Emotional Dysregulation: Acceptability and Preliminary Effectiveness of a DBT Skills Training Program for Adolescents in the Spanish School System.

Emotional dysregulation is a key factor in the development and maintenance of multiple disabling mental disorders through a person's lifespan. Therefore, there is an urgent need to prevent emotional dysregulation as early as possible. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the acceptability and preliminary effectiveness of an adapted Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Training program for Emotional Problem Solving in Adolescents (DBT STEPS-A) during secondary school. The sample included 93 adolescents (mean age = 12.78; SD = 0.54; and 53% female) studying in their 2nd year of secondary sc

Illustrating routine outcomes monitoring at different points in a patient's journey: Inpatient then daypatient treatment of a patient with depressive and borderline symptoms.

Routine outcomes monitoring (ROM), combined with a psychotherapeutic intervention, can improve outcomes by assisting therapists in supporting patients who are off track to achieve a better treatment endpoint. While many ROM systems are suitable for particular clinical contexts, psychotherapy delivered in a hospital setting presents unique challenges. People can be treated as inpatients and daypatients, and psychotherapy may be delivered in multiple formats (e.g., closed and open groups; group and individual). The present case study will illustrate the adaptation of ROM to this environment with

[Borderline personality disorder].

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is common, affecting 2 to 6 % of the general population, with a high prevalence in psychiatric settings. It is characterized by emotional, relational instability and impulsivity, often associated with suicidal behaviors and comorbid disorders (anxiety, depression, addictions). Understanding BPD relies on the concept of relational hypersensitivity, rooted in an altered self-concept. The biopsychosocial approach explains its origins through the interaction between genetic vulnerability and emotional invalidation during childhood, exacerbated by trauma. Treat
