Journal of pediatric endocrinology & metabolism : JPEM2016eng
Shwachman-Diamond syndrome (SDS) is an autosomal recessive bone marrow failure syndrome typically characterized by neutropenia and pancreatic dysfunction, although phenotypic presentations vary, and the endocrine phenotype is not well-described. We report a unique case of a patient with SDS who initially presented with hypoglycemia and micropenis in the newborn period and was diagnosed with congenital hypopituitarism. We are not aware of any other cases of SDS documented with this combination of complex endocrinopathies.

METHODS: Between 2005 and 2012, 50 patients (23 female, 27 male) with nonunion of the humeral shaft were included in this retrospective study. The mean age was 51.3 years (14 to 88). The patients had a mean of 1.5 prior operations (sd 1.2;1 to 8). All patients were assessed according to a specific risk score in order to devise an optimal and individual therapy plan consistent with the Diamond Concept. In 32 cases (64%), a change in the osteosynthesis to an angular stable locking compression plate was performed. According to the individual risk an additional bone graft and/or bone morphogenetic

BACKGROUND: Shwachman-Diamond syndrome (SDS) is characterized by hypoplasia of the bone marrow and exocrine pancreas and a high risk of leukemia. It is unknown whether solid tumors are part of the disease phenotype.
PROCEDURE: We performed copy number alterations using Affymetrix human SNP 6.0 array. Furthermore, we did direct sequencing of pancreatic cancer-related genes and immunohistochemical expression of selective proteins.
RESULTS: Among 41 patients with SDS who enrolled on the registry, we identified one male patient with a solid tumor: moderately differentiated pancreatic ductal aden

In order to explore the diagnosis and therapy of Diamond Blackfan anemia (DBA), the clinical data of 45 cases of DBA admitted in our hospital from February 1994 to July 2011 were analyzed retrospectively. The clinical characteristics, results of laboratory examination, treatment reaction and outcome of disease were investigated. The results indicated that out of 45 children diagnosed as DBA, 14 cases (31.1%) had short stature and physical malformation. All patients had anemia with reticulocytopenia. Thirty-four patients (75.6%) had mean corpuscular volume. Eleven patients (24.4%) had macrocyti

The purpose of these studies was to evaluate four toothbrushes with a similar flat profile for stiffness and efficacy in removing artificial plaque deposits from interproximal areas, or depth of removal from broad tooth surfaces, and to relate these findings to bristle stiffness. The test toothbrush had 5-mil diameter, elongated diamond-shaped bristles (D). Three toothbrushes contained 5-mil (5), 6-mil (6), or 7-mil (7) diameter round bristles. Stiffness studies were performed using the ISO 8627 method. In the efficacy studies, toothbrushing was conducted with a vertical or horizontal brushing

PURPOSE: To develop and validate a fast, motion-robust, free-breathing abdominal 3D T1ρ mapping method by combining variable-density diamond radial k-space sampling with fast-MAPSS (magnetization-prepared angle-modulated partitioned-k-space spoiled gradient-echo snapshots).
METHODS: 3D MAPSS T1ρ imaging was performed at 3T using five spin-lock time (TSL) pairs in phantom scans and three TSL pairs in nine healthy volunteers. Phantom experiments compared Cartesian sampling (reference) with stack-of-stars and diamond radial sampling. Volunteer scans utilized stack-of-stars and diamond sampling.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) and Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome (SDS) share overlapping features, including recurrent respiratory infections and pancreatic insufficiency, which can complicate diagnosis. We report a case of a six-year-old girl who presented with productive cough, steatorrhea and recurrent infections. Initial evaluation showed abnormal liver enzymes, elevated immunoreactive trypsin, neutrophil dysfunction and skeletal anomalies. Sweat test was equivocal and CFTR genetic panel was negative. Further genomic analysis identified compound heterozygous mutations in the SBDS gene: c.258+2T>C (know

Diamond-Blackfan anemia syndrome (DBAS) is a rare inherited bone marrow failure (BMF) syndrome characterized by erythroid aplasia, congenital malformations, and cancer predisposition. With its genetic heterogeneity, variable penetrance and expressivity, DBAS poses significant diagnostic challenges, necessitating advancements in genetic testing for improved accuracy. Here, we present the case of an 18-year-old male with a long-standing macrocytic anemia that remained undiagnosed despite standard whole exome sequencing (WES). Revisiting a family-trio WES analysis with clinical insight led to the

The research on thermoelectric (TE) materials has a long history. Holding the advantages of high elemental abundance, lead-free and easily tunable transport properties, copper-based diamond-like (CBDL) thermoelectric compounds have attracted extensive attention from the thermoelectric community. The CBDL compounds contain a large number of representative candidates for thermoelectric applications, such as CuInGa2, Cu2GeSe3, Cu3SbSe4, Cu12SbSe13, etc. In this study, the structure characteristics and TE performances of typical CBDLs were briefly summarized. Several common synthesis technologies

BACKGROUND Diamond-Blackfan anemia (DBA) is a rare genetic disorder associated with macrocytic anemia and reticulocytopenia, with patients usually transfusion-dependent in the first years of life. The disease inheritance is predominantly autosomal dominant, but varying presentations have been described owing to incomplete penetrance and widely variable expression. De novo mutations have been reported in about 55% of cases. This pediatric disease is commonly characterized by malformation of the extremities as well as craniofacial abnormalities and cardiac and urogenital defects. There have been

Shwachman-Diamond syndrome is an autosomal-recessive disorder characterised by bone marrow failure and a cumulative risk of progression to acute myeloid leukaemia. The Shwachman-Bodian-Diamond syndrome (SBDS) gene, the only gene known to be causative of the pathology, is involved in ribosomal biogenesis, stress responses and DNA repair, and the lack of SBDS sensitises cells to many stressors and leads to mitotic spindle destabilisation. The effect of ionising radiation on SBDS-deficient cells was investigated using immortalised lymphocytes from SDS patients in comparison with positive and nega
