Detection of Schistosoma spindale ova and associated risk factors among Malaysian cattle through coprological survey.

The present study was conducted to determine the occurrence of Schistosoma spindale ova and its associated risk factors in Malaysian cattle through a coprological survey. A total of 266 rectal fecal samples were collected from six farms in Peninsular Malaysia. The overall infection rate of S. spindale was 6% (16 of 266). Schistosoma spindale infection was observed in two farms, with a prevalence of 5.4% and 51.9%, respectively. This trematode was more likely to co-occur with other gastro-intestinal parasites (i.e., Dicrocoelium spp., Paramphistomum spp., strongyle, Eimeria spp. and Entamoeba s

Endoparasites of the European Hare (Lepus Europaeus) (Pallas, 1778) in Central Italy.

Brown hare (Lepus europaeus) populations in Europe have declined through decades due to several, but not clear yet, factors. Parasite infections and diseases are some of the causes that directly affected the survival and breeding rates of animal population. A study on the endoparasites of 70 hares (37 hunted free-living hares, and 33 bred on farms hares) was performed between 2015 - 2017 in the province of Grosseto (central Italy), an area where the impact of parasites in the hare population has never been investigated. During necroscopic analysis of hunted hares the following helminthes were

Oxidative stress and changes in liver antioxidant enzymes induced by experimental dicroceliosis in hamsters.

The purpose of our study was to assess the effects of experimental dicroceliosis on the antioxidant defense capability of the liver in hamsters. Studies were carried out at 80 and 120 days after infection with an oral dose of 40 metacercariae of Dicrocoelium dendriticum. The parasitic pathology was ascertained by the presence of fluke eggs in feces, increased serum ALT and AST activities, and histological findings. The concentration of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) and the ratio of oxidized to reduced glutathione (GSSG/GSH), measured as markers of oxidative stress, were signi

Percutaneous ultrasound-guided cholecystocentesis in cows.

A method was developed for percutaneous ultrasound-guided cholecystocentesis in cattle. The procedure was performed on the right side in the 9th, 10th, or 11th intercostal space of 30 cows. Of the 30 cows, 20 were slaughtered 24 hours after cholecystocentesis and the remaining 10 cows were slaughtered after a 10-day observation period. Changes in the peritoneum and gallbladder wall, observed at slaughter, were minimal. During the 10-day observation period, general behavior, attitude, and appetite of the 10 cows were normal. A transient, slight increase in rectal temperature was observed in 6 c

Dogs' Gastrointestinal Parasites and their Association with Public Health in Iran.

INTRODUCTION: Dogs harbour zoonotic parasites that cause serious infections in humans, such as visceral larva migrans, ocular larva migrans, cystic echinococcosis, and alveolar echinococcosis. Studies on dogs' gastrointestinal parasites in different geographical locations are required to increase knowledge of the risk of canine zoonoses in human populations. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The presence of parasites was examined in 450 faecal samples collected from eight zones of Zanjan province, northwest Iran from June to November 2015. The samples were examined using the sedimentation concentration m

Prevalence of intestinal parasitic pathogens among HIV-positive individuals in Iran.

Parasites are important enteric pathogens among patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. There have been very few reports on the prevalence of intestinal parasites among such patients in Iran. To determine the prevalence of intestinal parasites among HIV-positive individuals, we collected single stool samples and analyzed them for detection of various intestinal parasites from 206 HIV-positive individuals with different immune status visited in different medical centers in Iran. The data were tested for statistical significance with chi(2) and Mann-Whitney U tests. The overa

Helminth Fauna of Wild Boars (Sus scrofa): A Coprological Survey from Southern Italy.

Wild boar (Sus scrofa) populations have increased worldwide, causing sanitary and environmental concerns. These ungulates can harbor a wide range of pathogens that should be carefully monitored due to the zoonotic potential and risk of transmission to domestic pigs. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and distribution of helminth infections among wild boars in southern Italy and to explore associated risk factors for infections. A total of 369 wild boars were culled during one hunting season in four hunting districts in the Campania region, and individual fecal egg counts were performed

Gastrointestinal parasites as a possible threat to an endangered autochthonous Portuguese sheep breed.

Helminth and protozoan infections are responsible for important diseases in grazing sheep, which can be especially threatening in an autochthonous breed at risk of extinction like the Churra Galega Mirandesa Portuguese sheep breed. The aim of the present study was to determine the diversity, prevalence and burden of gastrointestinal parasites in these sheep and to assess the effects of deworming practices, cohabiting animals on the farm and feed management. Coprological qualitative and quantitative analysis (flotation, natural sedimentation and McMaster method) were used to identify and quanti

A review of dicrocoeliosis of ruminants including recent advances in the diagnosis and treatment.

Despite its widespread presence among grazing ruminants, dicrocoeliosis, also known as "small liver fluke" disease, is poorly known and often underestimated by researchers and practitioners in many countries. This is primarily due to the multiple parasitic infections which affect ruminant livestock and mask the pathology of dicrocoeliosis, to the difficulties in diagnosing it with coprological techniques and, finally, to the few effective drugs found. Furthermore, the biological cycle of Dicrocoelium, which requires a snail and an ant as intermediate hosts, and the high number of ecological an

Declining body weight of moose calves related to parasite and disease burden.

Body weights of hunted moose calves have markedly declined in southwestern Finland during this millennium, but the cause of this phenomenon is yet unknown. We studied whether the decline is associated with prevalence of parasites and diseases. For this purpose, we collected tissue samples (lung, heart, liver and faeces) from moose calves hunted in autumn in study area with declining calf body weights (N = 45) and in control area with no decline in body weight (N = 19). We compared the findings between regions and studied the relationship between carcass weight and parasitological and pathologi
