The leukemic oncogene tal-2 is expressed in the developing mouse brain.

tal-1 (T-cell acute leukemia-1; also known as SCL) and tal-2 genes belong to a family of basic helix-loop-helix transcription factors and were originally isolated from the breakpoints of chromosomal translocations in human T-cell leukemia cell lines. tal-1 is expressed not only in hematopoietic cells but also in several endothelial structures and the central nervous system during development. On the other hand, the detailed function and the sites of expression of tal-2 have remained obscure. We cloned the tal-2 cDNA from a mouse embryonic cDNA library and examined its expression pattern in the

The Pax protein Noi is required for commissural axon pathway formation in the rostral forebrain.

No-isthmus (Noi) is a member of the zebrafish Pax family of transcriptional regulators that is expressed in restricted domains of the developing CNS. In the developing eye and optic nerve, the Noi+ cells are primitive glial cells that line the choroid fissure and optic stalk/nerve to its junction with the optic tract. This pattern of Noi expression is retained in the adult, defining the optic nerve astroglia, which wrap the left and right nerves separately at the midline, thus forming the bodily crossed optic chiasm found in fish. In embryos carrying mutations in the noi gene, the choroid fiss

Distribution of serotonin- and dopamine-immunoreactivity in the brain of the teleost Clarias gariepinus.

The distribution of serotonergic and dopaminergic cell bodies and varicose fibres in the brain of the teleost Clarias gariepinus was studied immunohistochemically using antisera against formaldehyde-conjugated serotonin and dopamine. Many serotonergic and dopaminergic fibres innervated the areas dorsalis telencephali pars medialis and pars lateralis dorsalis, as well as the area ventralis telencephali pars ventralis. In the diencephalon, a large number of serotonergic and some dopaminergic fibres were found in the preoptic nucleus, innervating the cells of this nucleus. In addition, serotonerg

The distribution of dopamine immunoreactivity in the forebrain and midbrain of the lizard Gekko gecko: an immunohistochemical study with antibodies against dopamine.

The distribution of dopamine (DA) immunoreactivity in the forebrain and the midbrain of the lizard Gekko gecko was studied by using recently developed antibodies against DA. Dopamine-containing cells were found around the glomeruli of the olfactory bulb, in several parts of the periventricular hypothalamic nucleus, in the periventricular organ, the ependymal wall of the infundibular recess, the lateral hypothalamic area and the pretectal posterodorsal nucleus of the diencephalon, and in the ventral tegmental area, the substantia nigra, and the presumed reptilian equivalent of the mammalian A8

Effects of intraventricular gamma-acetylenic-GABA on GABA concentrations, GABA-T and GAD in several areas of the chick brain.

The great interest in new compounds able to increase GABA concentration in the brain as potential antiepileptic drugs has led to the synthesis of powerful inhibitors of GABA transaminase (GABA-T) e.g. gamma-acetylenic GABA (GAG) and gamma-vinyl-GABA. Present experiments were aimed to study behavioral, electrocortical and biochemical effects of GAG after its intraventricular injection. It has been shown that in chicks the microinjection of GAG into the third cerebral ventricle produced a biphasic behavioral and electrocortical syndrome : an initial phase of behavioral and electrocortical sleep

Diencephalic origin of the pineal gland of the chicken embryo.

In the present paper, the diencephalic origin of the chick pineal gland was analyzed by a series of experiments: prosencephalic substitution; in vitro culture of isolated diencephalons; and total or partial excission of the diencephalic roof. The results indicate that the differentiation of the chick pineal gland in the rooof of the third ventricle is not influenced by the neighbouring brain vesicles and is of diencephalic origin. Moreover, in order to obtain chick embryos with pineal agenesia, the whole diencephalic roof has to be removed.

Histological reinterpretation of paraphysis cerebri in Ambystoma mexicanum.

Intraventricular and extraventricular choroid plexuses are neuroepithelial folds which arise from the roof of the diencephalon. We describe the circumventricular structure of the diencephalon roof (paraphysis cerebri) during the various development stages of Ambystoma mexicanum. The parasagittal sections of the larvae epithalamus exhibit the presence, in addition to the epiphysis, of two dorsal primordia in nearby areas, which appear to be extraventricular saccular evaginations of different origin that give rise to two structures we define as the anterior extraventricular choroid plexus (AEP)

Comparison of oral administration of fructose and glucose on food intake and physiological parameters in broiler chicks.

Like glucose, fructose is a monosaccharide, but the mechanisms of its absorption and metabolism in the body are very different between the 2 molecules. In this study, we investigated the effects of oral administration of glucose and fructose on food intake, diencephalic gene expression, and plasma metabolite concentrations in broiler chicks. The animals used in this study were 4-day-old male broiler chicks (Ross 308). They were given glucose, fructose (200 mg/ 0.5 mL/ bird), or a similar volume of distilled water orally after 6 h fasting. After treatment, measurements of food intake (at 0, 30,

Expression of the kisspeptin/gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) system in the brain of female Chinese sucker (Myxocyprinus asiaticus) at the onset of puberty.

The kisspeptin-kisspeptin receptor (kissr)-gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) system plays a key role in regulating the onset of puberty in mammals. However, the role of this system in fish is still unclear. We examined the relative gene expression patterns for kiss1, kiss2, kissr2, sGnRH, and pjGnRH in all parts of the brains of Chinese sucker (Myxocyprinus asiaticus) females at the prepubertal and pubertal stages by using real-time PCR. We also analyzed the expression of kiss1 and GnRH1 via immunofluorescence. Two variants of kisspeptin; a variant of kissr (kissr2); and two variants of Gn

Detailed morphogenetic analysis of the embryonic chicken pars tuberalis as glycoprotein alpha subunit positive region.

The pars tuberalis (PT) is a part of the anterior pituitary gland that is located as a thin cell layer surrounding the median eminence. The characteristics of PT, including cell shape and cell composition, differ from those of the pars distalis (PD), suggesting that PT has unique physiological functions and different morphogenesis compared to PD. In this study, we used chicken embryos and showed for the first time that most hormone-producing cells in PT at embryonic day (E) 20.0 were only glycoprotein α subunit (αGSU)-positive staining cells. Then, using serial frontal and sagittal sections, w

Thyroid hormone receptor beta2 is strongly up-regulated at all levels of the hypothalamo-pituitary-thyroidal axis during late embryogenesis in chicken.

In this study, we tried to elucidate the changes in thyroid hormone (TH) receptor beta2 (TRbeta2) expression at the different levels of the hypothalamo-pituitary-thyroidal (HPT) axis during the last week of chicken embryonic development and hatching, a period characterized by an augmented activity of the HPT axis. We quantified TRbeta2 mRNA in retina, pineal gland, and the major control levels of the HPT axis - brain, pituitary, and thyroid gland - at day 18 of incubation, and found the most abundant mRNA content in retina and pituitary. Thyroidal TRbeta2 mRNA content increased dramatically be

Emx2 and Pax6 function in cooperation with Otx2 and Otx1 to develop caudal forebrain primordium that includes future archipallium.

One of the central issues in developmental neurobiology is how the forebrain is organized ontogenetically. The traditional view is that the anterior neuroectoderm first develops into mesencephalic and prosencephalic vesicles; the latter vesicle subsequently develops into the diencephalon and secondary prosencephalon, of which dorsal parts protrude to generate the telencephalon. The diencephalon yields the pretectum, thalamus, and prethalamus, and the telencephalon produces the archipallium, neopallium, and ganglionic eminences. By identifying cell descendants that once expressed Emx2 with use

Clinical features of Kleine-Levin syndrome with localized encephalitis.

We report the clinico-pathological findings regarding a 9 year-old girl with some clinical features of Kleine-Levin syndrome who died suddently as a result of pulmonary embolism in the course of femoro-iliac thrombophlebitis. Neuropathological examination provided evidence of perivascular inflammatory infiltrates and microglial proliferation of nodular type located in the diencephalon and midbrain. These findings suggest that a localized encephalitis may be the underlying condition in Kleine-Levin syndrome.

LHRH neuronal subtypes have multiple origins in chickens.

Previous studies indicate that LHRH neurons of the septal-preoptic area originate in the olfactory epithelium. In the current study, we found that LHRH neurons entering the telencephalon from the olfactory nerve were not continuous with LHRH neurons in the thalamus. In addition, ablation of the olfactory placode eliminated LHRH neurons in the telencephalon but did not eliminate LHRH neurons in the thalamus. We propose that there are at least two sites of LHRH neuron production, the olfactory epithelium and the diencephalon.

Ascending Visual Pathways to the Telencephalon in Teleosts with Special Focus on Forebrain Visual Centers, Associated Neural Circuitries, and Evolution.

Visual pathways to the telencephalon in teleost fishes have been studied in detail only in a few species, and their evolutionary history remained unclear. On the basis of our recent studies we propose that there were two visual pathways in the common ancestor of teleosts, while one of them became lost in acanthopterygian fishes that emerged relatively recently. Our in-depth analyses on the connections of visual centers also revealed that there are connections shared with those of mammals, and retinotopic organization of the ascending connections is maintained at least to the level of the dienc

The relationships between temporal lobe and diencephalic structures implicated in anterograde amnesia.

The relationship between the anterograde amnesic syndromes associated with diencephalic and temporal lobe pathology is examined in the light of recent findings. It is proposed that a common feature of anterograde amnesia is damage to part of an "extended hippocampal system" comprising the hippocampus, the fornix, the mammillary bodies, and the anterior thalamic nuclei. Damage to this system results in deficits in the recall of episodic information, the core symptom of anterograde amnesia. In contrast, lesions in this system need not disrupt tests of recognition memory when they primarily tax f
