Maternal diet-induced hypercholanemia alters gut microbiota and metabolome in adult female Western diet-fed offspring.

Children of mothers with intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) are more likely to develop metabolic disease later in life. Using a mouse model of gestational cholestasis, we previously found that 18-week-old offspring had metabolic alterations that were exacerbated in female offspring when challenged with a Western diet (WD). Microbiota changes are emerging as a potential mechanism for developmental programming, and the maternal gut microbiota is known to be altered in pregnancy and in ICP. We hypothesized that, in our model, the offspring gut microbiota is altered by maternal gestationa

Diet and Lipidomics Mediated Regulation of Mesenchymal Stem Cell Function: Diet, Omics and Stem Cell Connection.

Mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) are promising candidates in regenerative medicine, but their effectiveness is significantly influenced by the surrounding metabolic and nutritional conditions. Increasing evidence suggests that lipids act not only as energy sources but also as regulators of MSC fate. This review explores how lipid metabolism influences the balance among stemness, immunomodulation, and differentiation into adipogenic or osteogenic lineages. It does so through mechanisms such as fatty acid uptake, β-oxidation, de novo lipogenesis, and membrane remodeling, all orchestrated by

Traditional Korean diet high in one-carbon nutrients increases global DNA methylation: implication for epigenetic diet.

PURPOSE: DNA methylation is a major epigenetic phenomenon through which diet affects health and disease. This study aimed to determine the epigenetic influence of the traditional Korean diet (K-diet) on global DNA methylation via one-carbon metabolism. METHODS: A crossover study was conducted on 52 women. Two diets, a K-diet, high in plant foods and low in calories and animal fat, and a control diet, similar to the diet currently consumed in Korea, were provided to all subjects alternately for 4 weeks with a 4-week washout period. Clinical parameters were measured before and after each dietar

Initiating the ketogenic diet in infants with treatment refractory epilepsy while maintaining a breast milk diet.

PURPOSE: The ketogenic diet has been found to be safe and effective in the treatment of drug resistant epilepsy in childhood. The age range of children undergoing this treatment has steadily been going down. There is strong evidence that it is a safe alternative in infants with drug resistant seizures. The American Academy of Pediatrics strongly supports continuing a breast milk diet until infants are at least six months of age. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the ketogenic diet in infants while maintaining a breast milk diet. METHOD: This is a cohort study

Mediterranean diet, Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) style diet, and metabolic health in U.S. adults.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: There is sparse evidence on the relationship between the Mediterranean diet, Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) style diet, and metabolic health, especially comparing cardiometabolic phenotypes among in normal weight and obese populations. We aimed to investigate the association of the Mediterranean diet scores (MDS) and DASH index with metabolically healthy obese (MHO) and metabolically obese normal weight (MONW) phenotypes in a representative U.S. METHODS: MDS and DASH index were calculated using dietary data from 2767 adults aged 20-90 years without any prior

META060 protects against diet-induced obesity and insulin resistance in a high-fat-diet fed mouse.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether a reduced iso-α acid derived from an extract of Humulus lupulus L., META060, had an effect on weight gain, body composition, and metabolism in a high-fat-diet (HFD) fed mouse model. METHODS: Weight gain was monitored for up to 20 wk in mice receiving a low-fat diet, an HFD, or an HFD supplemented with META060 or rosiglitazone. Body composition was determined using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometric analysis. Indirect calorimetric measurements were performed to investigate the energy balance in the mice, and oral glucose tolerance tests were administered to ex

Low-Carbohydrate (Ketogenic) Diet in Children with Obesity: Part 2-Hormonal Effects of the Ketogenic Diet.

Background: For decades, the ketogenic diet has been successfully used for the treatment of obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes. The mechanisms through which it affects metabolism are not fully understood, but the hormonal changes that occur during ketogenic nutrition are likely to play an important role. Objectives: To investigate the effect of the ketogenic diet on various hormones associated with obesity and the accompanying metabolic disorders in childhood. Methods: One hundred children aged 8-18 years with obesity were enrolled. After baseline anthropometric, biochemical, and

Slowly Digestible Carbohydrate Diet Ameliorates Hyperglycemia and Hyperlipidemia in High-Fat Diet/Streptozocin-Induced Diabetic Mice.

OBJECTIVE: Given that the prevalence rate of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) continues to increase, it is important to find an effective method to prevent or treat this disease. Previous studies have shown that dietary intervention with a slowly digestible carbohydrate (SDC) diet can improve T2DM with almost no side effects. However, the underlying mechanisms of SDC protect against T2DM remains to be elucidated. METHODS: The T2DM mice model was established with a high-fat diet and streptozocin injection. Then, SDC was administered for 6 weeks. Bodyweight, food intake, organ indices, fasting b

A diet management information and communication system to help chronic kidney patients cope with diet restrictions.

Hyperphosphatemia, hyperkalemia, and fluid overload are frequently observed and pose major physiological concerns in chronic kidney patients. The problems are closely related to inadequate diet and phosphate binder intake, which are considerable challenges for many patients. The objective of this study was to develop and test an educational decision support system to help kidney patients cope with diet restrictions and phosphate binder dosage. A prototype was designed including three main functions: 1) information and education, 2) food analyser database and diet registration, and 3) model-bas

Complementary mechanisms of high-carbohydrate diets and ketogenic diets restore adult hippocampal neurogenesis and cognitive function in high-fat diet induced obesity in mice.

High-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity impairs cognition and hippocampal neurogenesis, linked to reduced metabolic flexibility between mitochondrial fatty acid β-oxidation (FAO) and cytosolic de novo lipogenesis (DNL). It is not fully understood if switching to a high-carbohydrate diet (HCD) or a ketogenic diet (KD) could reverse these HFD-induced deficits, or if they do so through different mechanisms. Male C57BL/6J mice received HFD for 8 weeks to induce obesity. Mice were then either maintained on the HFD or switched to an HCD or KD for an additional 8 weeks. We evaluated systemic metabolism (

Diet and Risk of Cardiovascular Disease.

Diet ranks among the most modifiable determinants of cardiovascular disease risk, yet the evidence base is vast, conflicting, and burdened by observational confounding. This narrative review synthesizes evidence on controversial dietary components and established heart-healthy dietary patterns. Moderate egg intake is acceptable within a high-quality dietary pattern; preparation method meaningfully modifies risk. Habitual moderate coffee consumption is neutral to modestly cardioprotective; unfiltered preparations elevate low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) through diterpene retention. N

The Role of Diet in Functional Dyspepsia.

Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a disorder of gut-brain interaction affecting approximately 7% of the global population under Rome IV criteria, characterised by postprandial fullness, early satiation, epigastric pain, and/or epigastric burning in the absence of identifiable organic disease. Meal ingestion is the dominant symptom trigger in the majority of patients, yet the relationship between diet and FD is bidirectional: dietary exposures drive symptoms through established pathophysiological mechanisms, while FD itself can promote maladaptive eating behaviours and progressive dietary restrictio

Diet and leishmaniasis in the Ecuadorian Amazon.

In Ecuador's Amazon, Indigenous communities affected by leishmaniasis often modify their diets as part of their health-seeking practices. Drawing on qualitative research with sixty-eight participants from seven Indigenous groups, this study explores how and why patients' diets shift in pursuit of healing from leishmaniasis. Participants understand therapeutic diets holistically, including food recommendations, preparation methods, and social behaviors believed to influence disease progression. Across groups, dietary logics of therapeutic efficacy often reflect analogical reasoning, a form of r

The Mediterranean diet and cardiovascular disease.

Since the 1950s, when Ancel Keys popularized the traditional Mediterranean diet, an immense accrual of large and valid studies, including prospective cohort studies, randomized controlled trials (RCT), and systematic reviews, have been conducted to investigate the potential health benefits related to this dietary pattern. The available evidence shows that the traditional Mediterranean diet represents a sustainable, healthy, and highly palatable pattern with a wide array of associated health benefits. In particular, its protective effects on cardiovascular disease have been supported by several

The role of diet and nutrition in glaucoma.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review aims to explore the connection between diet and nutritional intake with optic nerve health for patients with glaucoma. RECENT FINDINGS: Using the AAO Grading Criteria to determine level of evidence, Level 1 and Level 2 studies reviewed here examine associations between nutritional intake and glaucoma. Increasing consumption of dietary nitrates and retinols, incorporating the Mediterranean diet, and reducing intake of ultra-processed foods to lower glaucoma risk are supported by Level 1 evidence. Level 2 evidence suggests that dietary niacin, antioxidants, fruits

Cancers attributable to diet in Italy.

Cancer burden can be reduced by controlling modifiable risk factors, including diet. We provided an evidence-based assessment of cancer cases and deaths attributable to diet in Italy in 2020. We considered dietary factor-cancer type pairs for which the World Cancer Research Fund/American Institute for Cancer Research - Continuous Update Project reported either 'convincing' or 'probable' evidence of causal association. Relative risks were retrieved from recent meta-analyses and dietary intakes (around 2005) from a national food consumption survey. Sex-specific population attributable fractions
