We assessed the risk of human pulmonary dirofilariasis in the Canary Islands, hyperendemic for canine heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis), a zoonotic vector-borne infection. For this purpose, 1479 inhabitants were tested for anti-D. immitis antibodies. Four of the 7 islands presented high seroprevalences (from 6.2 to 12.7%), therefore high exposure to the parasite and risk of zoonotic infection. These corresponded to those islands with high canine prevalences of dirofilariasis and favourable climatic conditions for the development of mosquito vectors. The lowest prevalences (from 0 to 1.6%) were f

Human dirofilariasis is a zoonotic infection caused by worms of the genus Dirofilaria. Most reported cases involve Dirofilaria repens, and D. immitis infection has been rarely reported. Canines act as a reservoir for the infection, while human infections are sporadic. Human dirofilariasis has been widely reported in South Europe; however, the worldwide distribution constantly changes. We herein report an extremely rare case of subcutaneous trunk dirofilariasis in a 45-year-old immunosuppressed woman, caused by D. immitis. The parasitic infection was detected using ultrasonography. The infectio

This paper assesses the trends in the identification of different Dirofilaria species in the Rostov Region and comparatively analyzes the general clinical and biochemical blood indices in dogs with and Without helminthism. Seasonal variations in the invasion and species composition of the parasite have been established. At present, there is a gradual replacement of the species Dirofilaria repens by Dirofilaria immitis in this area. The blood general clinical and biochemical studies in ill dogs with dirofilariasis have ascertained that the pathogenic action on the animals is more pronounced wit

A 3-yr-old female mongrel dog was referred to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of Chungnam National University in the Republic of Korea. An adult heartworm, Dirofilaria immitis, was found in the abdominal cavity of the dog during spaying. Dirofilariasis in this dog was also diagnosed by modified Knott's test, ELISA test, and PCR analysis. The present case is the first report on the migration of an adult dog heartworm to the abdominal cavity of a dog in the Republic of Korea.

We report a case of dirofilariasis of the breast occurring in a 6-yr-old Bernese female dog living in central Italy presenting with a breast lump, diagnosed on cytological examination of nipple secretion fluid smears. The direct smears of nipple discharge revealed clusters of glandular cells characterized by mild pleomorphic appearance and the presence of some nematodes of about 350 microm in length in the background. The smears also contained several inflammatory cells, including eosinophils. Both the Knott and the antigen tests were negative for Dirofilaria immitis. The morphological feature

An asymptomatic patient with a pulmonary coin lesion surgically diagnosed with pulmonary dirofilariasis caused by infection with Dirofilaria immitis (D. immitis) is presented. The preoperative stored serum of the patient was positive for D. immitis by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). A family study showed that three of five family members were seropositive for D. immitis. These results suggest that family members of a patient with pulmonary dirofilariasis were frequently exposed to D. immitis and serodiagnostic methods are useful for detecting subclinical infection of D. immitis.

A 43-year-old German man suffered from an insect bite, which was followed by a severe local inflammation and lymphadenitis. A year later, he developed dry cough, chest pain, and an oligoarthritis of the ankle and knee joints. While other causes of the symptoms could be excluded, serologic findings suggested a dirofilarial infection with reactive arthritis due to the parasite. The observation points out, that in cases of unclassifiable mono- or oligoarthritis, reactive arthritis due to parasites should be considered in the spectrum of differential diagnoses. The disease is rare at present, but

OBJECTIVE: To identify worms obtained from patients with eye lesions and to describe the demographic factors of patients with ocular dirofilariasis.
METHODS: A retrospective descriptive study was conducted in 31 worm samples from 30 patients referred by consultant ophthalmologists between 2006 and February 2014. Data on age, sex and site of the lesion were ascertained from the details given in the referral letters. Morphological identification of the worm was based on the maximum width, length and appearance of the cuticle. The sex of the worm was determined by the width, length and presence

Dirofilariasis due to Dirofilaria repens is a rare anthropozoonotic disease, with dogs and cats being the definite hosts for this parasite. This worm is transmitted by various species of mosquitoes and usually presents as a subcutaneous nodule. Human cases have been reported from all around the Mediterranean, Eastern Europe, and Central and Southern Asia. In the present case involving a 28-year-old patient of Tunisian origin, infection manifested as a nodule in the left epididymis. In the context of increasing international travel and migration, dirofilariasis is a diagnosis that should be kep

Human subcutaneous dirofilariasis is an increasingly reported zoonosis caused by several filarial species, in particular by Dirofilaria (Nochtiella) repens. Like many filarial worms, D. repens harbors the bacterial endosymbiont Wolbachia that has been implicated in the inflammatory features of filarial infection. Immunohistochemical staining against the Wolbachia surface protein (WSP) was carried out on 14 skin nodules and showed numerous bacteria within the intact worms and occasional positive staining within the surrounding inflammatory infiltrate. Serum samples from 11 of these patients res

INTRODUCTION: Human non-visceral dirofilariasis, a mosquito-borne disease of carnivores (dogs), is chiefly due to Dirofilaria repens in France and is well known in the Mediterranean basin. This zoonosis can be misdiagnosed in northern areas of France. We present and discuss two human cases diagnosed in Abbeville and Amiens (Picardy) by histological examination.
EXEGESIS: The former case appeared as an axillary tumefaction occurring in a 41-year-old women 6 months after holidays in Montauban (southwestern France), the other as an intraorbital 'tumor' in a 53-year-old man who travelled for prof

Human dirofilariasis due to Dirofilaria (Nochtiella) repens is a common zoonotic infection in Sri Lanka. Todate 70 cases are on record, and they include 3 expatriates from Russia, England and Korea, who were undoubtedly infected in Sri Lanka. Around 30-60% of dogs are infected with D. repens in various parts of the country and the mosquito vectors are Aedes aegypti, Armigeres subalbatus, Mansonia uniformis and M. annulifera. Unlike in other countries of the old world infection is most common in children under the age of 9 years, the youngest being 4 months old and the scrotum, penis and perian

We describe an infection caused by Dirofilaria repens nematodes in California, USA. A firm nodule developed after an insect bite on a patient's eyelid. Excision with morphologic and molecular analysis confirmed D. repens infection. Our findings confirm the necessity of both molecular and histological studies to identify nematode infections.

Ocular and orbital dirofilariasis, though rare, can mimic common eye infections or other conditions and lead to misdiagnosis. We present a series of four patients with ocular and orbital dirofilariasis in Sisak-Moslavina County of Croatia, emphasizing the variable clinical presentations and diagnostic challenges. Ocular dirofilariasis should be considered in patients with unexplained symptoms, particularly in endemic or rural areas. Detailed anamnesis and timely surgical intervention are essential for accurate diagnosis and management.

Zoonotic filariasis due to Dirofilaria repens (D. repens) is prevalent in several regions of the world. In view of recent rise of human D. repens infections in Europe, Africa and Asia, it is considered an emerging zoonosis in these continents. Most of the documented cases of human dirofilariasis recorded in India had ocular infections, but very few subcutaneous dirofilariasis have been reported. We hereby report two cases of subcutaneous human dirofilariasis due to D.repens with varied clinical presentations.

We present a case of human pulmonary dirofilariasis, diagnosed in a 55-year-old heavy smoker (male) by wedge resection of the pulmonary lesion and histologic examination. The dirofilaria lesion had the clinical and radiographic appearance of a peripheral pulmonary lesion invading the anterior chest wall and mediastinum. The reported radiographic image of the disease is different from the usually described picture of a pulmonary coin lesion.

"Human dirofilariasis, caused by filarial worms of the genus Dirofilaria, is considered an emerging zoonotic filarial infection transmitted to humans by zoo-anthropophilic blood-sucking insects. The most common Dirofilaria species causing human infections include Dirofilaria repens and Dirofilaria immitis. In this case report, we present the case of a 60-year-old male patient who reported the presence of an intraoral swelling in the right maxillary vestibular region. Upon excision of the lesion and further microscopic and histological examination, a female Dirofilaria was identified as the cau
