BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Femoral nerve (FN) is the largest branch of lumbar plexus. It lies lateral to femoral artery (FA) and it is located outside the femoral sheath. Profunda femoris artery (PFA) is a branch of the FA. The present study aimed to observe the topographical anatomy and relationship of the PFA and the FN.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 12 embalmed cadaveric lower limbs (7 lefts and 5 rights) were taken and the thighs were dissected in detail. The relationship of PFA and FN were observed. Appropriate measurements were taken and the specimens were photographed.

Six children (nine limbs) underwent fibular centralization for complete paraxial tibial hemimelia. The preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative criteria as described by Brown (J Bone Joint Surg [Am] 1965; 47:695-704) were strictly met. A 33-year-old woman presented with pain in the right side of the abdomen at 35 weeks of gestation. She was treated for cystitis. A few days later, her abdominal pain had disappeared; however, she had developed pain in the right thigh and fever. She delivered a healthy child, but postpartum her leg symptoms deteriorated. She was found to have a necrotizing fasciitis, which necessitated disarticulation of the hip. The source of the infection was a perforated appendix.

This case demonstrates the use of the argon laser for ossicular mobilization. A preoperative audiologic evaluation revealed a severe conductive hearing loss, with a maximum air-bone gap. Since normal drilling procedures would result in a sensorineural hearing loss, the argon laser was chosen to remove a bony spur connecting the malleus to the posterior canal wall. When using the argon laser, no disarticulation of the incus and stapes is required. Postoperative audiologic evaluation revealed normal hearing sensitivity bilaterally.

A 50-cm fillet flap permitted above-knee amputation in lieu of hip disarticulation in a 20-year-old woman who had sustained severe injuries in a motorcycle accident. Although the flap was unusually long, the principles followed were the same as those for posterior flaps used in below-knee amputations and fillet flaps of the digits. The flap allowed preservation of maximal length in the residual limb and fully sensible skin coverage, both of which facilitated prosthetic usage.

Nine patients who had malignant bone tumors of the lower extremity were managed with wide en bloc resection and re-implantation of the extracorporeally autoclaved specimens. The segments were fixed by plate osteosynthesis, knee arthrodesis rod, or intramedullary nails. In one patient the complete femur was re-implanted. RATIONALE: Pelvic fractures associated with acute external iliac artery thrombosis is less common, it is easily ignored in clinical practice, and it can result in limb amputation and hemipelvectomy due to prolonged limb ischemia. We present 2 patients with acute external iliac artery thrombosis following pelvic fractures.

A man in his 20s with recurrent glioma developed rapid-onset trismus and left temporomandibular swelling. Imaging revealed condylar destruction with a mineralised mass. Acral melanoma is a rare form of skin melanoma. Subungual melanoma is the most common variant with poor prognosis and difficult diagnosis at the early stages. Surgical treatment of subungual melanoma remains a matter of debate. Standard surgical options include amputation or disarticulation of phalanges proximal to tumor growth. At the same time, some reports show the advantage of function-sparing surgery for melanoma in situ without impairment of surgical quality. Angiosarcomas are malignant tumors, which originate from the vessel endothelium and resemble the vessel structure. Stewart-Treves syndrome is an angiosarcoma which in general, develops in female patients after mastectomy and axillary lymph node dissection and is associated with chronic lymphedema. The prognosis of this rare complication is very poor. We present the case of a 52-year-old female who had undergone mastectomy due to breast cancer and 13 years later required shoulder disarticulation due to Stewart-Treves syndrome.

Conductive hearing loss can be determined in the course of middle ear surgery by sound probe stimulation and simultaneous recording of auditory brain stem responses. Mechanical properties of the ossicular chain, usually judged subjectively by the surgeon's visual and tactile senses, can be quantified objectively. Thus, disarticulation of ossicles can be localized precisely, and fixation of the head of the malleus can be differentiated from stapes fixation. Moreover, the function of the reconstructed ossicular chain or prosthesis may be ascertained.
