Further consideration of the learning impairment after aceperone in the marmoset: effects of the drug on shape and colour discrimination and on an alternation task.

Ten marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) learned to discriminate between pairs of small grey objects differing only in shape or small plain plaques differing only in colour, in a Wisconsin General Test Apparatus. Each day, each animal was presented with three consecutive visual discrimination problems in the order shape-colour-shape or colour-shape-colour. After aceperone, an alpha-noradrenergic antagonist, animals were impaired at learning the first but not the subsequent tasks of each trio. These results suggest that the previously observed impairment [10] on the first of a pair of object discrimi

Integrated HRMS metabolomics and machine learning strategy for discovering discriminant markers of Fritillaria and authenticity verification in commercial products.

The authenticity of Fritillaria is of critical importance given the widespread use of these bulbs in traditional medicine and commercial products. The prized Fritillaria cirrhosa is frequently adulterated with cheaper look-alike species. To address this, an integrated analytical strategy combining HRMS metabolomics with complementary machine learning algorithms was developed to discover chemical markers for species discrimination. OPLS-DA initially screened 60 candidate compounds from authenticated Fritillaria cirrhosa and Fritillaria ussuriensis bulbs. Subsequent feature selection using rando

A Gift From the Integration of Discriminative and Diffusion-Based Generative Learning: Boundary Refinement Remote Sensing Semantic Segmentation.

Remote sensing semantic segmentation must address both what the ground objects are within an image and where they are located. Consequently, segmentation models must ensure not only the semantic correctness of large-scale patches (low-frequency information) but also the precise localization of boundaries between patches (high-frequency information related to boundary components). However, most existing approaches rely heavily on discriminative learning, which excels at capturing low-frequency features, while overlooking its inherent limitations in learning high-frequency features for semantic

Machine learning based on radiomics for discriminating sellar region langerhans cell histiocytosis from germ cell tumors.

BACKGROUND: Differentiating sellar region germ cell tumors (GCTs) from Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is challenging due to highly similar MRI features, especially in tumor marker-negative patients. In this study, we aimed to develop and validate a radiomics model to distinguish tumor marker-negative sellar GCTs from LCH. METHODS: This retrospective study enrolled a total of 93 patients diagnosed pathologically or by therapeutic diagnosis at our single institution between April 2012 and April 2024, including 40 cases of LCH and 53 cases of GCTs. Radiomics features extracted from multipar

Discriminating between bipolar and major depressive disorder using a machine learning approach and resting-state EEG data.

OBJECTIVE: Distinguishing major depressive disorder (MDD) from bipolar disorder (BD) is a crucial clinical challenge as effective treatment is quite different for each condition. In this study electroencephalography (EEG) was explored as an objective biomarker for distinguishing MDD from BD using an efficient machine learning algorithm (MLA) trained by a relatively large and balanced dataset. METHODS: A 3 step MLA was applied: (1) a multi-step preprocessing method was used to improve the quality of the EEG signal, (2) symbolic transfer entropy (STE), an effective connectivity measure, was app

Use of Deep-Learning Genomics to Discriminate Healthy Individuals from Those with Alzheimer's Disease or Mild Cognitive Impairment.

OBJECTIVES: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most prevalent neurodegenerative disorder and the most common form of dementia in the elderly. Certain genes have been identified as important clinical risk factors for AD, and technological advances in genomic research, such as genome-wide association studies (GWAS), allow for analysis of polymorphisms and have been widely applied to studies of AD. However, shortcomings of GWAS include sensitivity to sample size and hereditary deletions, which result in low classification and predictive accuracy. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel deep-learning

Discriminating stress from rest based on resting-state connectivity of the human brain: A supervised machine learning study.

Acute stress induces large-scale neural reorganization with relevance to stress-related psychopathology. Here, we applied a novel supervised machine learning method, combining the strengths of a priori theoretical insights with a data-driven approach, to identify which connectivity changes are most prominently associated with a state of acute stress and individual differences therein. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging scans were taken from 334 healthy participants (79 females) before and after a formal stress induction. For each individual scan, mean time-series were extracte

A machine learning-assisted Cu-MOF/OPD/RB triple-emission ratiometric fluorescence sensing platform for the detection and discrimination of glutathione.

Herein, a machine learning-assisted Cu-MOF/OPD/RB triple-emission ratiometric fluorescence sensing platform has been developed for the highly sensitive and selective detection of glutathione (GSH). The bifunctional Cu-MOF serves as the core, exhibiting intrinsic blue fluorescence at 450 nm and peroxidase-like activity to catalyze the oxidation of o-phenylenediamine (OPD) into fluorescent DAP (545 nm) in the presence of H2O2. Rhodamine B (RB) is further introduced to provide red emission at 580 nm. DAP quenches the fluorescence of the Cu-MOF through an inner filter effect (IFE) while simultaneo

CD48, CD69, and TIGIT as diagnostic biomarkers for primary Sjögren's syndrome: an integrated machine learning and multi-disease discrimination validation study.

BACKGROUND: Primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) is a chronic systemic autoimmune disorder. However, current diagnostic methods remain limited, necessitating the exploration of non-invasive diagnostic markers with higher specificity. METHODS: This study integrated two GEO expression datasets to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) specific to pSS (distinct from SLE) and applied LASSO, XGBoost, RF, and SVM-RFE algorithms to screen candidate genes. Correlation and interaction network analyses were performed, followed by construction and validation of a diagnostic nomogram. The model's dif

Label-free detection and discrimination of respiratory pathogens based on electrochemical synthesis of biomaterials-mediated plasmonic composites and machine learning analysis.

Seasonal outbreaks of respiratory viral infections remain a global concern, with increasing morbidity and mortality rates recorded annually. Timely and false responses contribute to the widespread of respiratory pathogenic diseases owing to similar symptoms at an early stage and subclinical infection. The prevention of emerging novel viruses and variants is also a big challenge. Reliable point-of-care diagnostic assays for early infection diagnosis play a critical role in the response to threats of epidemics or pandemics. We developed a facile method for specifically identifying different viru

Hidden talents: Poly (I:C)-induced maternal immune activation improves mouse visual discrimination performance and reversal learning in a sex-dependent manner.

While there is a strong focus on the negative consequences of maternal immune activation (MIA) on developing brains, very little attention is directed towards potential advantages of early life challenges. In this study, we utilized a polyinosine-polycytidylic acid (poly(I:C)) MIA model to test visual pairwise discrimination (PD) and reversal learning (RL) in mice using touchscreen technology. Significant sex differences emerged in that MIA reduced the latency for males to make a correct choice in the PD task while females reached criterion sooner, made fewer errors, and utilized fewer correct

Bimetallic FeCu-N-C Single-Atom Nanozymes with Triple Enzymatic Activities Enabling a Colorimetric Sensor Array for Machine-Learning-Assisted Pesticide Discrimination.

Herein, by formamide self-condensation, an innovative Fe-Cu dual-atom nanozyme (FeCu-N-C) is presented, engineered with adjacent metal sites within a nitrogen-doped carbon scaffold, that exhibits synergistically enhanced peroxidase-, oxidase-, and laccase-like activities. This multienzymatic performance far exceeds that of single-atom Fe-N-C and Cu-N-C controls. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the proximity of Cu sites induces an upshift in the Fe d-band center from -1.52 eV to -0.88 eV, optimizing substrate adsorption and providing a mechanistic rationale for the obse

Machine Learning-Assisted Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy for Discriminating Plasma Leakage in Dengue Infection.

Dengue infection remains a major global health burden, ranging from asymptomatic infection to life-threatening severe dengue, which is characterized by increased vascular permeability and leakage of plasma from the intravascular compartment into the extravascular space. Plasma leakage during the critical phase of dengue illness, which follows the febrile phase, is a major contributor to disease severity and adverse clinical outcomes. Risk stratification remains challenging because clinical warning signs and routine laboratory abnormalities may become apparent only after vascular leakage has be
