Reassessing the evidence for universal school-age BCG vaccination in England and Wales: re-evaluating and updating a modelling study.

OBJECTIVES: In 2005, England and Wales switched from universal BCG vaccination against tuberculosis (TB) disease for school-age children to targeted vaccination of neonates. We aimed to recreate and re-evaluate a previously published model, the results of which informed this policy change. DESIGN: We recreated an approach for estimating the impact of ending the BCG schools scheme, correcting a methodological flaw in the model, updating the model with parameter uncertainty and improving parameter estimates where possible. We investigated scenarios for the assumed annual decrease in TB incidenc

A comparative analysis of two national tuberculosis reporting systems and their impact on tuberculosis case notification in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Before 2018, the use of parallel tuberculosis (TB) reporting systems was resource intensive with duplication of efforts and hence the need to select one that contributed to better TB case notification at the National TB and Leprosy Program (NLTP) in Uganda. We sought to analyse the difference in reporting rates between the two systems in order to improve NTLP TB case notification rates, logistics management, and planning for better health service delivery initiatives. METHODS: We conducted a comparative study to assess TB case notification between the web-based DHIS2 and the distr

[Prevention of Listeria infections].

Listeriosis is a rare but very serious foodborne disease. The non-contamination of food products is the best prevention of listeriosis. In spite of notable efforts to improve the microbiologic quality of food products through surveillance and control of food contaminations, the prevention has still to be based upon the information of consumers. This information can take different forms. When a food product is found to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, if the withdrawal of this product does not occur as early as to prevent its commercialisation, a consumers alert is necessary to avoi

Summary of National Surveillance Data on Vaccine Preventable Diseases in Australia, 2008-2011.

This summary report on vaccine preventable diseases in Australia brings together the 3 most important national sources of routinely collected data on vaccine preventable diseases (notifications, hospitalisations and deaths) for all age groups for the period January 2008 to December 2011. The general trend towards improved control of disease is evident, particularly in the childhood years. Detailed results are available in 16 individual chapters. Although these data have limitations, which are discussed in detail in the body of the report, some clear trends are evident. Compared with the previo

Timeliness and Diagnostic Yield of Suspected Botulism Notifications in a Tertiary Medical Center in Taiwan, 2014-2024.

Botulism is a rare but high-consequence foodborne intoxication in which early recognition and prompt reporting are essential for a timely public health response. We conducted a retrospective review of suspected botulism notifications reported through the hospital notifiable-disease system at National Taiwan University Hospital from 2014 to 2024. Demographics, presenting features, time from hospital presentation to notification, specimen types, and reference laboratory results were summarized, and the institutional response workflow was described as the operational context. Between 2014 and 202

Regional differences in historical diphtheria and scarlet fever notification rates in The Netherlands, 1905-1925: a spatial-temporal analysis.

BACKGROUND: We describe how rates of two frequently occurring notifiable diseases-diphtheria and scarlet fever-varied between regions of The Netherlands in the early twentieth century, and identify potential factors underlying this variation. METHODS: Digitized weekly mandatory notification data for 1905-1925, municipality level, were aggregated into 27 'spatial units' defined by unique combinations of province and population density category (high: more than 4500; mid : 1250-4500; low: less than 1250 inhabitants km-2). Generalized additive regression models were fitted to estimate the associ

Epidemiology of sexually transmissible infections in New South Wales: are case notifications enough?

BACKGROUND: Surveillance of sexually transmissible infections (STI)s is important to assess the disease burden in the population and to monitor and evaluate changes in trends over time. Routinely collected surveillance data in New South Wales are reliant on case reporting, which for many infections is an inadequate mechanism for capturing incidence and prevalence. Increasing rates of chlamydia over the past decade have sparked intense debate as to whether the current notification system is optimal and whether the true burden of infection are being measured. This study describes the current sur

Surveillance of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in Australia: 2008.

Australia-wide surveillance of all human transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) is performed by the Australian National Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease Registry (ANCJDR), since establishment in October 1993. During the surveillance period 1 April 2007 to 31 March 2008, the ANCJDR received 78 new suspect case notifications of TSEs (67 in 2007, 13 in 2008). This level of suspect case notification aligns with the previous 2006/2007 surveillance period, which was elevated in comparison to the previous 5 years. Based on the total number of probable and definite Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) c

Seasonal drivers of tuberculosis: evidence from over 100 years of notifications in Cape Town.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis incidence varies seasonally in many settings. However, the role of seasonal variation in reactivation vs. transmission is unclear.METHODS: We reviewed data on TB notifications in Cape Town, South Africa, from 1903 to 2017 (exclusive of 1995-2002, which were unavailable). Data from 2003 onward were stratified by HIV status, age and notification status (new vs. retreatment). We performed seasonal decomposition and time-dependent spectral analysis using wavelets to assess periodicity over time. We estimated monthly peak-to-peak seasonal amplitude of notifications as a per

The improving state of Q fever surveillance. A review of Queensland notifications, 2003-2017.

Q fever is a notifiable zoonotic disease in Australia, caused by infection with Coxiella burnetii. This study has reviewed 2,838 Q fever notifications reported in Queensland between 2003 and 2017 presenting descriptive analyses, with counts, rates, and proportions. For this study period, Queensland accounted for 43% of the Australian national Q fever notifications. Enhanced surveillance follow-up of Q fever cases through Queensland Public Health Units was implemented in 2012, which improved the data collected for occupational risk exposures and animal contacts. For 2013-2017, forty-nine percen

Impact of being placed at risk of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease: a qualitative study of blood donors to variant CJD cases and patients potentially surgically exposed to CJD.

BACKGROUND: The study objective was to describe the emotional and behavioural responses to Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) risk notification. METHODS: A qualitative study using 11 participants' interviews, which were analysed thematically with Framework Analysis. PARTICIPANTS: Six participants purposively selected from people exposed to surgical instruments used previously on patients with or at risk of CJD (any type; n = 60), and 5 participants from a cohort of blood donors to patients who subsequently developed variant CJD (n = 110). RESULTS: Notification was initially a shocking event, b

Chlamydia and gonorrhoea infections and the risk of adverse obstetric outcomes: a retrospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between prior chlamydia and gonorrhoea infections and adverse obstetric outcomes. METHODS: Records of women resident in New South Wales, Australia with a singleton first birth during 1999-2008 were linked to chlamydia and gonorrhoea notifications using probabilistic linkage. Obstetric outcomes and potential confounders were ascertained from the birth record. Logistic regression, adjusted for potential confounders was used to estimate the association between a disease notification prior to the birth and adverse birth outcomes: spontaneous preterm birth (S

Future directions for notifiable diseases: tuberculosis-related laws in the Philippines.

BACKGROUND: With the increasing burden of tuberculosis (TB) in the Philippines, and the risk of multidrug resistance to TB, there is a need to strengthen the surveillance system. In many countries, cases of TB are reported to health authorities, and reporting is an effective way to manage TB. Although TB is a universal and representative reportable disease, the Philippines does not designate it as a notifiable disease. MAIN TEXT: This study aimed to review and compare current communicable disease-related laws and regulations in the Philippines with relevant international laws and regulations

Enhancing tuberculosis case notifications through mapping sales of medicine in the private sector: a quasi-experimental study in Punjab province, Pakistan.

INTRODUCTION: In Pakistan, almost one-third of people who develop tuberculosis (TB) are missed by the National TB Program (NTP). A considerable number of people with TB receive treatment in the private sector but remain unnotified. This study documents the outcomes of an intervention to identify people with TB through private pharmacy engagement, building on mapping TB medicine sales in Punjab Province. METHODS: A comprehensive intervention was carried out in four districts of Punjab with high anti-TB drug sales, comprising a policy change requiring mandatory notification of TB medication sal
