Listeria monocytogenes is an important foodborne pathogen causing listeriosis. L. monocytogenes, existing in the natural environment, can also contaminate food products, which poses a serious threat to human health and life, especially for high-risk groups: pregnant women, newborn babies, and the elderly. Environmental adaptation of L. monocytogenes refers to the various strategies and mechanisms used by this bacterium to survive and thrive in diverse and often hostile environments that include, among others, toxic heavy metals and disinfectants. The aim of this study was to analyze WGS (whole

African swine fever (ASF) causes huge economic losses and is one of most dangerous diseases of pigs. The disease is known for almost 100 years, an effective vaccine or treatment is still unavailable, only proper biosecurity measures, including disinfection, are being applied, in order to prevent disease outbreaks. Eight active substances, i.e., formaldehyde, sodium hypochlorite, caustic soda, glutaraldehyde, phenol, benzalkonium chloride, potassium peroxymonosulfate and acetic acid, were tested, in order to confirm their effectiveness against African swine fever virus (ASFV). This specific sel

BACKGROUND: Exposure to disinfectants among healthcare workers has been associated with respiratory health effects, in particular, asthma. However, most studies are cross-sectional and the role of disinfectant exposures in asthma development requires longitudinal studies. We investigated the association between occupational exposure to disinfectants and incident asthma in a large cohort of U.S. female nurses.
METHODS: The Nurses' Health Study II is a prospective cohort of 116 429 female nurses enrolled in 1989. Analyses included 61 539 participants who were still in a nursing job and with no

Bacteria live primarily in microbial communities (biofilms), where they exhibit considerably higher biocide tolerance than their planktonic counterparts. Current standardized efficacy testing protocols of disinfectants, however, employ predominantly planktonic bacteria. In order to test the efficacy of biocides on biofilms in a standardized manner, a new assay was developed and optimized for easy-handling, quickness, low running costs, and above all-repeatability. In this assay, 5 mm glass- or polytetrafluoroethylene beads in 24 well microtiter plates served as substrate for Pseudomonas aerugi

Because surface disinfectants are an important means of pathogen control within laboratory animal facilities, these products must have an appropriate spectrum of antimicrobial activity. However, many other factors must also be considered, including effects on human health, environmental safety, and animal behavior. Aqueous solutions of sodium hypochlorite often are considered to be the 'gold standard' for surface disinfection, but these products can be corrosive, caustic, and aversive in odor. This study was designed to identify disinfectants that are as effective as hypochlorite solutions but

Listeria monocytogenes is a food-borne pathogen that can persist for years in food processing plants. It has been hypothesized that this could be due to the development of tolerance or resistance to the disinfectants used. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether biocide resistance or tolerance would evolve in L. monocytogenes under continued selection in three industrial disinfectants. L. monocytogenes EGD was exposed to Desinfect CL (hypochlorite) and Incimaxx DES (peracedic acid and hydrogen peroxide) for several hundred generations. This caused no increase in the minimal i

Cryptosporidiosis is mainly a problem in neonatal ruminants. Not only do Cryptosporidium spp. spread ubiquitously in our environment, but the protozoa are highly resistant to harsh environmental conditions and disinfectants, and a control measure is urgently required. This study investigated the potential biocidal activity on Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts of two commercial disinfectants developed originally to be used in farms and food-processing industries. The products, containing formaldehyde and hydrogen peroxide respectively, both had some anticryptosporidial effects. The viability and i

BACKGROUND: Candidozymaauris has emerged as a globally relevant healthcare-associated pathogen characterized by environmental persistence, outbreak potential, and multi-drug resistance. Current yeasticidal disinfectant efficacy testing relies on Candidaalbicans as the standard surrogate organism. However, emerging evidence suggests that susceptibility may vary by clade, active substance, and formulation, questioning the universal adequacy of surrogate-based testing.
AIM: The aim of this study was to determine whether C. albicans adequately serves as a surrogate organism for yeasticidal disinf

Lasting disinfection effects, that is, the residual disinfection effects (RDEs), of skin-coated disinfectants have rarely been considered for infection control owing to the challenges involved in the accurate evaluation of RDEs. In this study, we constructed a new skin evaluation model and determined the RDEs of existing disinfectants against viruses. Our results showed that ethanol and isopropanol had no RDE, whereas povidone-iodine, chlorhexidine gluconate, and benzalkonium chloride (BAC) exhibited RDEs, with 10% povidone-iodine and 0.2% BAC showing particularly strong RDEs. The RDE of 0.2%

The enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) group is responsible for outbreaks and sporadic cases around the world annually. EHEC produces a potent protein known as Shiga toxin in the human intestine causing mild to bloody diarrhea. Some cases of EHEC infections may develop life-threatening symptoms, which may lead to human death. It also has other virulent factors that enable the EHEC cells to adhere to a target tissue and invade to some extent to crave more nutrition and escape the external extreme conditions, such as disinfection treatment. For those reasons, beef is not permitted for raw

BACKGROUND: Farm disinfectants are widely used in primary production, but questions have been raised if their use can select for antimicrobial resistance. The present study examined the use of disinfectants in poultry and pig husbandry and its contribution to the antibiotic and disinfectant susceptibility of Escherichia coli (E. coli) strains obtained after cleaning and disinfection. On those field isolates antibiotic susceptibility was monitored and susceptibility to commonly used active components of farm disinfectants (i.e. glutaraldehyde, benzalkoniumchloride, formaldehyde, and a formulati

It is necessary and important to investigate the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in water treatment systems for the management of disinfection formation risk. In the present study, the formation potential of trichloromethane (TCM) and haloacetic acids in different algal metabolites were compared, and the formation kinetics of these DBPs were investigated. The results indicated that DBP formation potential, the traditional index widely used to evaluate the disinfection formation risk, can represent neither the total precursors of DBPs nor the possible generated amounts of DBPs in dr

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease that is transmitted by skin contact with waterborne schistosome cercariae. Mass drug administration with praziquantel is an effective control method, but it cannot prevent reinfection if contact with cercariae infested water continues. Providing safe water for contact activities such as laundry and bathing can help to reduce transmission. In this study we examine the direct effect of UV light on Schistosoma mansoni cercariae using ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (UV LEDs) and a low-pressure (LP) mercury arc discharge lamp.
