Adverse health consequences of the Iraq War.

The adverse health consequences of the Iraq War (2003-11) were profound. We conclude that at least 116,903 Iraqi non-combatants and more than 4800 coalition military personnel died over the 8-year course. Many Iraqi civilians were injured or became ill because of damage to the health-supporting infrastructure of the country, and about 5 million were displaced. More than 31,000 US military personnel were injured and a substantial percentage of those deployed suffered post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury, and other neuropsychological disorders and their concomitant psychosocial

A moving heart: querying a singular problem of 'immobility' in Afghan migration to the UK.

This article offers a single case study of everyday suffering (khapgan--Pakhto; "feeling down") experienced by one Afghan migrant in the United Kingdom, Zmarai. Single cases may destabilize categories of the political as conventionally institutionalized in relation to Afghan migrants according to such concepts as diaspora, citizenship, refugees, trauma, and culture, etc. Drawing theorizations of the way affects are key to a political economy's analysis of migrant labor ('a moving heart'), the study moves away from political or psychological categories centered on the trauma of war and displace

Navigating New Frontiers: Initial Auckland Experience of Seed Localisation Techniques for Breast Conserving Surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Breast conserving surgery for non-palpable tumours requires imaging-guided localisation, historically achieved with hookwire localisation (HWL). HWL, however, has recognised shortcomings including the need for same-day surgery with associated radiology resource/logistical constraints, psychological impact of wire protrusion, and complications such as wire displacement or fracture. The introduction of novel non-wire surgical marker navigation (SMN) techniques offers promising benefits. This study evaluates the early implementation of SMN (Sirius Pintuition and Merit SAVISCOUT syst

Caregiving for individuals with autism in forceful displacement crisis: experiences of refugees in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

This study examined the challenges faced by refugee parents caring for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Twenty-two parents participated in a mixed-methods study that included surveys and semi-structured interviews. The findings revealed significant challenges, including reduced parental well-being, increased family strain, and limited access to specialized support services. Parental satisfaction with caregiving was correlated with the perceived severity of autism symptoms. Thematic analysis of interviews identified five key domains of challenges: in

Nodding Syndrome: Shifting the Focus from Cause to Treatment.

Nodding Syndrome (NS) is a debilitating neurodegenerative disease plaguing children in sub-Saharan Africa, with the highest prevalence in northern Uganda and South Sudan. The disease is characterized by head nodding, seizures, cognitive impairment, and physical wasting. Despite decades of research, the exact etiology of NS remains unclear. Some evidence suggests a link to Onchocerca volvulus infection, vitamin deficiency, and war-related displacement. Although the etiology remains unclear, effective treatment has been demonstrated with a combination of anticonvulsants, nutritional supplementat

Reflections on Identity: Narratives of Obstetric Fistula Survivors in North Central Nigeria.

Obstetric fistula is a condition that affects women and can lead to identity changes because of uncontrolled urinary and/or fecal incontinence symptom experiences. These symptoms along with different emerging identities lead to family and community displacement. Using narrative inquiry methodology that concentrates on the stories individuals tell about themselves; interviews were conducted for 15 fistula survivors to explore their perception of identities of living with obstetric fistula. Within a sociocultural context, these identities consist of the "leaking" identity, "masu yoyon fitsari" (

Criminalizing homelessness: Longitudinal associations of police encounters and homeless sweeps with psychosocial health among the unhoused community in Los Angeles.

Cities across the United States are relying more on criminalization policies-including laws targeting behaviors deemed disruptive to public order, such as sleeping or camping in public spaces-to remove visible homelessness. How the enforcement of these policies impacts the health of unhoused people is unclear. The present study leverages monthly survey data from a prospective cohort of unhoused individuals in Los Angeles County (n = 731) to examine the longitudinal associations of experiences with police encounters and homeless sweeps on physical and psychosocial health. We estimated multileve

Intraoperative Skull Fracture During Halo Application in Subcranial Le Fort III: Strategies for Managing a Rare Complication.

External rigid distraction is an established method for achieving subcranial Le Fort III advancement in severe syndromic craniosynostosis. Craniofacial surgeons commonly use halo-type devices for these corrections, as they allow for multiple vectors of pull and facilitate larger midfacial advancements. Although most complications related to their use involve pin displacement or infection, rare complications such as skull fractures have been reported. At 3 months of age, a patient with Apert Syndrome underwent endoscopic-assisted craniectomies for bilateral coronal craniosynostosis. After a yea

Sex, relationships and 'everyday psychology' on British magazine problem pages, c. 1960-1990.

The later decades of the 20th century saw dramatic changes in sexual attitudes and behaviour in Britain: rates of divorce and remarriage increased; premarital sex and illegitimacy became more common, even as the pill and legal abortion opened up new reproductive choices; and following on from the decriminalisation of homosex, liberation movements began to celebrate gay lives. These shifts generated new possibilities, but often entailed much inner turmoil. The same period witnessed an unprecedented flourishing of professional and popular psychological expertise. Influential social and cultural

Vaginal orgasm is associated with less use of immature psychological defense mechanisms.

INTRODUCTION: Freud implied a link between inability to have a vaginal orgasm and psychosexual immaturity. Since Kinsey, many sexologists have asserted that no such link exists. However, empirical testing of the issue has been lacking. AIM: The objective was to determine the relationship between different sexual behavior triggers of female orgasm and use of immature psychological defense mechanisms. METHODS: Women reported their past month frequency of different sexual behaviors and corresponding orgasm rates and completed the Defense Style Questionnaire (DSQ-40). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: The

Post-traumatic stress disorder and its associated factors among internally displaced people due to conflict in Northwest Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that develops after being exposed to trauma, such as experiencing or witnessing life-threatening events, including war and other natural disasters. Despite the high levels of conflict, little attention has been given to post-traumatic stress disorder, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder and its associated factors among internally displaced people in Northwest Ethiopia. METHODS: A cross-sectional study design was

Prevalence of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Depression and Associated Factors Among Internally Displaced Persons in Al-Galgala, Sudan.

PURPOSE: Conflict and war can have profound psychological and physical consequences, including the displacement of civilians. Sudan currently has the greatest child displacement crisis and the highest number of displaced individuals worldwide. Stressors, such as unemployment, poor socioeconomic conditions, and lack of social integration can increase the risk of developing mental health conditions and worsen pre-existing ones. This study aims to determine the prevalence of PTSD and depression and to investigate the association of sociodemographic and displacement characteristics with both PTSD
