Modelling the economics of gaming in South Africa.

This paper considers the application of two models for determining the optimal location and characteristics of a casino in a post-apartheid South Africa. The intention in developing the models was to allow provinces a facility for considering how to maximize the return to the stakeholders in the license award process, namely society at large, as represented by the provincial government, and the casino operator. The Allocation Model works on an estimate of total potential gambling spend and how that may be best distributed amongst a number of casinos. The Profitability model takes the estimated

Aggressive dyscontrol in patients treated with benzodiazepines.

Periodic reports have suggested that benzodiazepines may be associated with a loss of control over aggressive impulses. Manifestations range from irritability to increased verbal hostility to frank assault. After reviewing data from case reports, experimental studies, and incidence reports, the authors attempt to characterize the phenomenon, estimate the incidence of clinically adverse sequelae to be less than 1%, and find consistent predictive indicators lacking.

Clinical aspects of impulsive-compulsive behaviors under dopaminergic treatment-A scoping review.

ObjectiveDopaminergic medications are commonly prescribed for Parkinson's disease (PD), restless legs syndrome, pituitary and psychotic disorders. Accumulating evidence indicates that dopaminergic treatment triggers impulsive-compulsive behaviors (ICBs), yet systematic synthesis of clinical evidence remains limited.MethodThis scoping review summarizes original research directly clinically relevant to ICBs under dopaminergic treatment, selected through systematic searches of MEDLINE PubMed, Web of Science, Embase and PsycInfo.ResultsOf 349 included studies, most focused on PD, with limited evid

Mild Traumatic Brain Injury and Aggression, Impulsivity, and History of Other- and Self-Directed Aggression.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is highly prevalent, with an estimated occurrence in the United States of more than 1.3 million per year. While one consequence of mTBI is impulsive aggressive behavior, very few studies have examined the relationship between history of mTBI and aggressive behavior in impulsively aggressive individuals. The authors examined the relationship between history of mTBI in a healthy control group (HC; N=453), a control group with psychiatric disorders (PC; N=486), and individuals with intermittent explosive disorder (IED; N=695), a disorder of primary impulsive agg

Linking neuroscience with modern concepts of impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease.

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) may experience impulse control disorders (ICDs) when on dopamine agonist therapy for their motor symptoms. In the last few years, a rapid growth of interest for the recognition of these aberrant behaviors and their neurobiological correlates has occurred. Recent advances in neuroimaging are helping to identify the neuroanatomical networks responsible for these ICDs, and together with psychopharmacological assessments are providing new insights into the brain status of impulsive behavior. The genetic associations that may be unique to ICDs in PD are also b

Artistic productivity and creative thinking in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Creative drive and enhanced artistic-like production may emerge in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) during dopaminergic therapy. However, it has not been described to date whether this artistic-like production results from dopaminergic drugs triggering innate skills or it could be considered as a repeated behavior possibly associated with impulse control disorders (ICDs). METHODS: We investigated creative drive in a cohort of cognitively preserved patients with PD by means of the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking (TTCT). We also investigated a putative associati

Aripiprazole and its adverse effects in the form of impulsive-compulsive behaviors: A systematic review of case reports.

Aripiprazole is an efficacious treatment for both the positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia and is also commonly used as a mood stabilizer. It is associated with better tolerability compared with other antipsychotics. However, there are reports of patients who experience problem gambling, hypersexuality, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, and other impulsive and/or compulsive behaviors as a result of aripiprazole administration and/or dosage increase. We aimed to do a systematic review of case reports published in this regard. After screening more than 6000 titles and abstracts in ten sc

Parkinson's disease and iatrogenic impulsive-compulsive behaviors: A case/non-case study to build a complete model of individual vulnerability.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Parkinson's disease (PD) is one of the most prevalent neurodegenerative diseases. First-line medications consist of drugs that act by counteracting dopamine deficiency in the basal ganglia. Unfortunately, iatrogenic impulsive-compulsive behaviors (ICBs) can occur in up to 20% of PD patients over the course of their illness. ICBs must be considered multifactorial disorders that reflect the interactions of the medication with an individual's vulnerability and the underlying neurobiology of PD. We aimed to explore the predictive genetic, psychopathological and neurological fa

Measuring impulsivity in Parkinson's disease: a correlational and structural neuroimaging study using different tests.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Impulsivity is an aspect of personality and a major component of multiple neuropsychiatric conditions. In Parkinson's disease, it has been associated with the expression of impulse control disorders, a highly prevalent non-motor complication. Even though multiple tests of impulsivity have been used in this context, the impact of test choice has not been addressed. The aim was to evaluate whether different impulsivity measures in Parkinson's disease share substantial inter-scale and anatomical correlations or rather mirror different underlying phenomena. METHODS: In a c

Scales to assess impulsive and compulsive behaviors in Parkinson's disease: Critique and recommendations.

Impulse control disorders (ICDs) and related impulsive and compulsive behaviors (together called ICBs) have been increasingly recognized in the context of Parkinson's disease (PD) and treatment. The International Parkinson's and Movement Disorder Society commissioned a task force to assess available clinical screening instruments and rating scales, including their clinimetric properties, make recommendations regarding their utility, and suggest future directions in scale development and validation. The literature was systematically searched for scales measuring a range of reported ICBs in PD.

[Impulse control in addiction: a translational perspective].

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity is a hallmark of addiction and predicts treatment response and relapse. Impulsivity is, however, a complex construct. Translational cross-species research is needed to give us greater insight into the neurobiology and the role of impulsivity in addiction and to help with the development of new treatment strategies for improving patients' impulse control. AIM: To review recent evidence concerning the concept of impulsivity and the role of impulsivity in addiction. METHOD: The concept and neurobiology of impulsivity are reviewed from a translational perspective. The rol

A systematic review of nonpharmacological treatment options for skin picking disorder.

Skin picking disorder (SPD) is a well-described neuropsychiatric disorder that causes severe stress and impairment. However, there is no clear protocol for treating patients, and only a relatively small body of literature evaluating treatment approaches. This review aims to summarize and compare recent publications and provide an up-to-date guide of current nonpharmacological treatments for SPD. A literature review was conducted on all nonpharmacological SPD treatment studies published between 2017 and 2023 using PubMed, CINAHL Plus with Full Text (EBSCO) and Scopus. Management of psychiatric disorders in Parkinson's disease : Neurotherapeutics - Movement Disorders Therapeutics.

Affective disorders (depression and anxiety), psychosis, impulse control disorders, and apathy are common and sometimes disabling psychiatric conditions in Parkinson disease (PD). Psychiatric aspects of PD are associated with numerous adverse outcomes, yet in spite of this and their high frequency, there remains incomplete understanding of epidemiology, presentation, risk factors, neural substrate, and management strategies. Psychiatric features are typically co- or multimorbid, and there is great intra- and interindividual variability in presentation [1]. The neuropathophysiological changes t

Evaluating the quality of evidence for gaming disorder: A summary of systematic reviews of associations between gaming disorder and depression or anxiety.

Gaming disorder has been described as an urgent public health problem and has garnered many systematic reviews of its associations with other health conditions. However, review methodology can contribute to bias in the conclusions, leading to research, policy, and patient care that are not truly evidence-based. This study followed a pre-registered protocol (PROSPERO 2018 CRD42018090651) with the objective of identifying reliable and methodologically-rigorous systematic reviews that examine the associations between gaming disorder and depression or anxiety in any population. We searched PubMed

Imaging behavioural complications of Parkinson's disease.

In addition to motor symptoms, behavioural complications are commonly found in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Behavioural complications, including depression, anxiety, apathy, impulse control disorder and psychosis, together have a large impact on PD patient's quality of life. Many neuroimaging studies using PET, SPECT and MRI techniques have been conducted to study the underlying neural mechanisms of PD pathogenesis and pathophysiology in relation to its behavioural complications. This review will survey these PET, SPECT and MRI studies to describe the current understanding of the ne
