The dark side of social support: understanding the role of social support, drinking behaviors and alcohol outlets for child physical abuse.

The purpose of this study is to examine how parental drinking behavior, drinking locations, alcohol outlet density, and types of social support (tangible, emotional, and social companionship) may place children at greater risk for physical abuse. Data on use of physical abuse, drinking behaviors, types of social support, social networks, and demographic information were collected via telephone interviews with 3,023 parent respondents in 50 cities in California. Data on alcohol outlet density were obtained by the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. Multilevel Poisson models wer

The relationship between past-year drinking behaviors and nonmedical use of prescription drugs: prevalence of co-occurrence in a national sample.

This study examined the relationship between past-year drinking behaviors and nonmedical use of prescription drugs (NMUPD) in a nationally representative sample. Prevalence estimates in the United States were derived based on data collected from face-to-face interviews using the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC) (n=43,093 individuals aged 18 years and older). Nonmedical use of prescription opioids, stimulants, tranquilizers, and sedatives was more prevalent among individuals with alcohol use disorders (AUDs) than those without AUDs. The odds of reporting

Origins and consequences of age at first drink. I. Associations with substance-use disorders, disinhibitory behavior and psychopathology, and P3 amplitude.

BACKGROUND: Although an early age at first drink has been repeatedly associated with substantially elevated rates of alcoholism, the mechanisms underlying this association remain unclear. We investigated whether the association of age at first drink (AFD) with alcoholism was more consistent with the hypothesis that the former causes the latter or the hypothesis that both are manifestations of some common vulnerability. METHODS: We investigated whether substance use and mental health disorders, education, IQ, and personality were associated with AFD in a sample of 2670 adults; whether P3 ampli

Conformity to masculine norms and its association with drinking behaviors and alcohol-related consequences among adult men: A meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Studies typically show that men are at higher risk for heavy alcohol use than women. Research linking conformity to masculine norms and drinking behaviors among adult males has grown steadily during the past 10 years. We conducted the first meta-analysis that examines (a) the strength of the associations between conformity to masculine norms and alcohol use outcomes, and (b) the extent to which the strength of these associations would be affected by the specific type of drinking behavior or methodological factors. METHODS: We included 35 studies (N=32,412) in this meta-analysis th

Posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms mediate the relationship between traumatic experiences and drinking behavior among women attending alcohol-serving venues in a South African township.

OBJECTIVE: South Africa has high rates of traumatic experiences and alcohol abuse or dependence, especially among women. Traumatic experiences often result in symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and PTSD has been associated with hazardous drinking. This article examines the relationship between traumatic events and hazardous drinking among women who patronized alcohol-serving venues in South Africa and examines PTSD as a mediator of this relationship. METHOD: A total of 560 women were recruited from a Cape Town township. They completed a computerized assessment that included alc

An Examination of College Students' Adult Sexual Assault Experiences, Risky Drinking Behaviors, Alcohol Centrality Beliefs, and Restorative Justice Attitudes.

Sexual assault is an issue on college campuses and links to alcohol use and centrality beliefs. Severity of sexual assault experiences and alcohol use and centrality beliefs, independently and jointly, have deleterious effects on individuals' well-being. However, little is known about how this shapes individuals' perceptions of interventions that can aid in their restoration and healing - such as their attitudes toward restorative justice. In a sample of 2,056 college students, we examined whether adult sexual assault experiences relate to alcohol consumption and centrality beliefs, and evalua

Sex chromosome and gonadal hormone contributions to binge-like and aversion-resistant ethanol drinking behaviors in Four Core Genotypes mice.

INTRODUCTION: While substantial research has focused on the contribution of sex hormones to driving elevated levels of alcohol drinking in female rodents, fewer studies have investigated how genetic influences may underlie sex differences in this behavior. METHODS: We used the Four Core Genotypes (FCG) mouse model to explore the contribution of sex chromosome complement (XX/XY) and gonad type [ovaries (Sry-)/testes (Sry+)] to ethanol (EtOH) consumption and quinine-resistant drinking across two voluntary self-administration tasks: limited access consumption in the home cage and an operant resp

FKBP5 inhibitors modulate alcohol drinking and trauma-related behaviors in a model of comorbid post-traumatic stress and alcohol use disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) leads to enhanced alcohol drinking and development of alcohol use disorder (AUD). Identifying shared neural mechanisms might help discover new therapies for PTSD/AUD. Here, we employed a rat model of comorbid PTSD/AUD to evaluate compounds that inhibit FK506-binding protein 51 (FKBP5), a co-chaperone modulator of glucocorticoid receptors implicated in stress-related disorders. Male and female rats received a familiar avoidance-based shock stress followed by voluntary alcohol drinking. We then assessed trauma-related behaviors through sleep bout cycles, hyp

Effects of time-varying changes in tobacco and alcohol use on depressive symptoms following pharmaco-behavioral treatment for smoking and heavy drinking.

BACKGROUND: Complete abstinence from alcohol as well as smoking cessation have been shown to predict reductions in depressive symptoms over time. However, whether reducing alcohol use or smoking positively affect depressive symptoms has yet to be examined. The current study examined depressive symptoms as a function of time-varying changes in alcohol use and smoking status following a pharmaco-behavioral treatment addressing smoking cessation and alcohol reduction. METHODS: Participants were heavy-drinking smokers (n = 150) followed for 26 weeks after their quit smoking date, with assessments

Affinity for risky behaviors following prenatal and early childhood exposure to tetrachloroethylene (PCE)-contaminated drinking water: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Many studies of adults with acute and chronic solvent exposure have shown adverse effects on cognition, behavior and mood. No prior study has investigated the long-term impact of prenatal and early childhood exposure to the solvent tetrachloroethylene (PCE) on the affinity for risky behaviors, defined as smoking, drinking or drug use as a teen or adult. OBJECTIVES: This retrospective cohort study examined whether early life exposure to PCE-contaminated drinking water influenced the occurrence of cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, and drug use among adults from Cape Cod, Massa

A Multilevel Analysis of Social Environmental Factors Related to Substance Use, Tobacco Use, and Binge Drinking Behaviors Among Older Adults.

INTRODUCTION: Social environmental factors are associated with risky health behaviors. However, limited research examines these relationships among older adults and across multiple levels of the social environment. METHODS: This study analyzed data from a 2021 survey of older adults (aged ≥50 years, n=2,774) in the mid-Atlantic region of the U.S. Using a socioecologic framework, the social environment was measured at the levels of the individual (loneliness, resilience, perceived discrimination), interpersonal (emotional social support), neighborhood (attraction to neighborhood, acts of neigh

Modeling the effect of ambient temperature on reticulorumen temperature, and drinking and eating behaviors of late-lactation dairy cows during colder seasons.

Dairy cows may suffer thermal stress during the colder seasons especially due to their open-air housing systems. Free water temperature (FWT) and feed temperature (FT) are dependent on ambient temperature (AT) and can be critical for maintaining body and reticulorumen temperature (RT) in cold conditions. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of FWT and FT on RT fluctuations, and of AT on RT and drinking and eating behaviors in late-lactation cows during cold exposure. Data were collected from 16 multiparous lactating cows for four 6-d periods during the autumn and winter sea
