Ascorbic and salicylic acid regulate antioxidant defense and drought stress responses in maize.

Climate change led to water scarcity becoming the greatest threat to the growth and yield of maize. Despite the application of growth promoters, the synergistic effects of ascorbic and salicylic acid application remain unexplored, regarding the biochemical mechanisms in the maize plant under drought stress conditions. This study aimed to investigate the impact of foliar applications of ascorbic and salicylic acid on inducing drought stress tolerance in maize. The treatments were comprised of drought (WW = well-watered at 85% FC, DS = drought stress at 40% FC), foliar application (NH = no-spray

Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi and Plant Resilience: Mechanisms of Drought and Salinity Stress Tolerance.

Terrestrial plants are frequently exposed to fluctuating abiotic stresses throughout their life cycle, and mycorrhizae can markedly enhance host plant resistance to such challenges. This review summarizes recent advances in our understanding of how arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) enhance host plant tolerance through multiple mechanisms. AMF promote stress tolerance through diverse mechanisms, including nutrient solubilization, polyamine accumulation, reactive oxygen species scavenging, physiological improvements, maintenance of ultrastructural stability via membrane integrity, accumulation

Heterologous expression of DobHLH25 from Dendrobium officinale enhances drought tolerance in Arabidopsis.

Drought stress severely constrains the growth, yield, and accumulation of bioactive compounds in Dendrobium officinale (D. officinale), a valuable medicinal orchid, and this challenge is exacerbated under simulated wild cultivation where plants are inevitably exposed to recurring water deficits. Basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factors are well-established regulators of plant abiotic stress responses. However, the molecular mechanisms by which bHLH transcription factors respond to drought stress in this species remain largely unknown. In this study, a bHLH transcription factor gene,

Genotype-Specific Biochemical Responses of Apple Trees to Repeated Drought-Rehydration Cycles.

Repeated drought-rehydration episodes expose perennial fruit trees to alternating stress and recovery phases, while treatment-level averages can obscure genotype-specific response strategies. We evaluated seven biochemical markers in fourteen apple (Malusdomestica Borkh.) genotypes during two consecutive drought-rehydration cycles: proline, malondialdehyde (MDA), total phenolics, total flavonoids, and the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and peroxidase (POX). Both drought cycles increased all measured markers, with the strongest overall response at the end of the secon

Screening and Bioinformatic Analysis of Drought-Adaptive-Response Genes in Wild Cerasus humilis.

This study aimed to screen genes associated with drought adaptation in Cerasus humilis and analyze their sequence characteristics and evolutionary relationships. The results could provide a theoretical basis for exploring the molecular basis underlying drought adaptation of Cerasus humilis. Two-year-old wild Cerasus humilis plants were cultivated in a greenhouse, and irrigation was completely withheld for 20 consecutive days. Leaves were sampled and a cDNA library of wild Cerasus humilis was constructed. By utilizing high-throughput screening in yeast combined with mannitol-induced simulated d

Increased pine root exudation of phenolic acids and amino acids under drought.

Belowground carbon (C) allocation by trees, particularly through root exudation, is a key pathway influencing long-term C storage in forest soils. Future climate change scenarios, such as drought and elevated CO2 (eCO2) strongly affect trees' physiology and influence belowground C allocation. However, how the rate and chemical composition of root exudation change, especially under the combined effect of drought and eCO2, remains poorly understood. We conducted an experiment to examine the single and combined effects of drought and eCO2 on the belowground C allocation of Pinus brutia Ten saplin

Hydrogen sulfide primes drought tolerance in plants by metabolic control of DNA methylation.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a gasotransmitter that contributes to plant stress responses. In this study, we investigated the mechanisms underlying H2S-induced priming in rice drought tolerance. Combining transcriptomic and epigenomic analyses, we show that H2S pretreatment establishes a coordinated regulatory program associated with enhanced stress resilience. H2S attenuated drought-induced transcriptional changes while promoting the expression of dehydrin genes, a hallmark of the primed state. Under non-stress conditions, H2S triggered sustained transcriptional reprogramming, including activati

Morphological, physiological, and root metabolomic responses of Hemerocallis minor Mill. to drought stress.

INTRODUCTION: Drought stress is a major environmental factor limiting plant growth and ecosystem stability in arid and semi-arid regions. Hemerocallis minor Mill., a perennial herb with strong drought tolerance, has potential applications in ecological restoration and marginal land utilization. However, the coordinated relationships among morphological, physiological, and metabolic responses, as well as the response characteristics under different intensities of drought stress, remain poorly understood. METHODS: In this study, a 12-week gradient drought stress experiment was conducted. An int

Mulberry ERF Transcription Factor MnERF23 Is a Positive Regulator of Plant Drought Tolerance.

Mulberry (Morus alba L.) is an important economic tree species, and its leaves are increasingly being used to prepare healthy dishes in addition to serving as food for silkworms. Drought is one of the main stress factors affecting the quality of mulberry leaves; however, the molecular mechanisms through which mulberry plants respond to drought stress are currently unclear. The AP2/ERF gene family is involved in plant growth, development and stress response processes. In response to drought stress, the expression of mulberry MnERF23 is induced. The overexpression of MnERF23 in Arabidopsis thali

Functional properties improve predictions of long-term productivity invariability but not resistance to drought.

Identifying the factors mediating the resilience and invariability of plant communities and their associated ecosystem functions is critical to understand the ecological impacts of climate change. Prior work has explored how classic "community properties" (characterizing a community by species composition) regulate the resilience and invariability of ecosystem functioning. Mechanistically, community properties influence resilience and invariability via species' traits, and as a result, "functional properties" (characterizing a community via functional traits) might better predict these qualiti

Predicting the burden of acute malnutrition in drought-prone regions of Kenya: A statistical analysis.

In drought-prone regions, timely and granular predictions of the burden of acute malnutrition could support decision-making. We explored whether routinely collected and/or publicly available data could be used to predict the prevalence of global and severe acute malnutrition, as well as the mean weight-for-height Z-score and middle-upper-arm circumference for age Z-score, in arid- and semi-arid regions of Kenya, where drought is projected to increase in frequency and intensity. The study covered six counties of northern Kenya and the period 2015-2019, during which a major drought occurred. To

Between conflict and climate: how drought deepens displacement in war-torn Sudan.

The persistent conflict in Sudan has worsened the impacts of the prolonged droughts, destroying crops and livestock and severely undermining people's means of survival. Furthermore, the scarcity of water and fertile land has increased competition over resources between communities, further displacing populations. This displacement leads to worsening the crisis, straining resources, spreading disease and overwhelming healthcare. For instance, rainfall, which is one of the most devastating climate changes, can reach up to 427.70 mm in one city. Consequently, Sudan confronts widespread famine thr

Integrated Analysis of Physiological Responses and Transcriptome of Cotton Seedlings Under Drought Stress.

Investigating the physiological responses and resistance mechanisms in plants under drought stress provides critical insights for optimizing irrigation water utilization efficiency and promoting the development of irrigation science. In this study, cotton seedlings were cultivated in a light incubator. Three drought stress levels were applied: mild (M1, 50-55% field moisture), moderate (M2, 45-50%), and severe (M3, 40-45%). Transcriptome analysis was performed under mild and severe stress. The results revealed that differentially expressed genes (DEGs) related to proline degradation were down-

The study on the function of exogenous NO-mediated miR166e-5p in regulating the drought resistance of alfalfa.

The "king of forage," alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), is not only a high-quality forage crop but also addresses challenges arising in agricultural production and environmental governance. However, its production and application are severely impacted by drought. Physiological phenotype analysis has revealed that exogenous nitric oxide (NO) can enhance the drought tolerance of alfalfa. This study utilizes "Sandeli" alfalfa as the material to investigate the function of exogenous nitric oxide (NO)-mediated miR166 in regulating drought tolerance in alfalfa through the application of AmiRNA (Artifici

Hydrogen sulfide-induced barley resilience to drought and salinity through protein persulfidation.

Barley (Hordeum vulgare) is a widely cultivated cereal crops, and its production is increasingly threatened by environmental stresses such as drought and salinity. Hydrogen sulfide is established as a signaling molecule that promotes tolerance to plant stress throught persulfidation, a post-translational modification of cysteine residues in proteins. The purpose of this study is to explore the impact of NaHS (sulfide donor) pretreatment on barley plants in enhancing tolerance to drought and salinity stresses, and determine if persulfidation is involved. In pretreated-plants, phenotypical trait

Drought, Extreme Heat, and Intimate Partner Violence in Low- and Middle-Income Countries.

IMPORTANCE: Recent evidence has shown that elevated temperatures are associated with a higher risk of intimate partner violence (IPV), a serious violation of human rights. However, it remains unclear whether drought also heightens the risk and whether drought and extreme heat jointly affect IPV. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the interactive association between drought, extreme heat, and IPV in 42 low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study included women answering multicluster surveys in sub-Saharan Africa, South and Southeast Asia, Lat

Assessment of Drought Tolerance in Wheat genotypes for Sustainable Food Security and Breeding Programs

The crop which is widely consumed and utilized because of its social benefits and economic importance worldwide is wheat. In many parts of the world, it is generally consumed as feed and food for its nutritional benefits, and its productivity is uniform under different environmental effects. In a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replication, an experiment was conducted to assess 50 different wheat cultivars. These cultivars were evaluated under two distinct levels; normal (non-stressed) and drought (stressed) conditions. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) under non-stressed (no

Karst fissures mitigate the negative effects of drought on plant growth and photosynthetic physiology.

Hard limestone substrates, which are extensively distributed, are believed to exacerbate drought and increase the difficulty of restoration in vulnerable karst regions. Fissures in such substrates may alleviate the negative effect of drought on plants, but the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. In a two-way factorial block design, the growth and photosynthesis of 2-year-old Phoebe zhennan seedlings were investigated in two water availabilities (high versus low) and three stimulated fissure habitat groups (soil, soil-filled fissure and non-soil-filled fissure). Moreover, the fissur

A stress-inducible protein regulates drought tolerance and flowering time in Brachypodium and Arabidopsis.

To cope with environmental stresses and ensure maximal reproductive success, plants have developed strategies to adjust the timing of their transition to reproductive growth. This has a substantial impact on the stress resilience of crops and ultimately on agricultural productivity. Here, we report a previously uncharacterized, plant-specific gene family designated as Regulator of Flowering and Stress (RFS). Overexpression of the BdRFS gene in Brachypodium distachyon delayed flowering, increased biomass accumulation, and promoted drought tolerance, whereas clustered regularly interspaced short

Identification of drought tolerant Chickpea genotypes through multi trait stability index.

Drought is a major and constantly increasing abiotic stress factor, thus limiting chickpea production. Like other crops, Kabuli Chickpea genotypes are screened for drought stress through Multi-environment trials (METs). Although, METs analysis is generally executed taking into account only one trait, which provides less significant reliability for the recommendation of genotypes as compared to multi trait-based analysis. Multi trait-based analysis could be used to recommend genotypes across diverse environments. Hence, current research was conducted for selection of superior genotypes through
