Automaticity and attention in Huntington's disease: when two hands are not better than one.

People with Huntington's disease (HD) commonly report difficulty carrying out two everyday tasks simultaneously. This difficulty, confirmed by experimental studies, is typically ascribed to impaired attention. Yet, dual-task problems extend to relatively simple tasks, such as walking and talking, which would ordinarily be considered relatively undemanding of attention. The study tests the hypothesis that in HD there is a deficit in the ability to automatise task performance. Thus, simple tasks, which place minimal demands on conscious attention in healthy controls, make disproportionately high

Evaluating Dual Task Neurological Costs with Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy: A Preliminary Report in Healthy Athletes.

BACKGROUND: Dual task assessments, which simultaneously challenge and assess cognitive and motor performance, have been used to improve the assessment of athletes with sports-related concussions (SRC). Our lab created a Dual Task Screen (DTS) to evaluate athletes with SRCs, and we have established that it is a valid behavioral measure, as it consistently elicits poorer behavioral performance under dual, compared to single, task conditions. Here, we used a Neuroimaging-Compatible (NC) version of the DTS, named the NC-DTS, which uses portable functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to asse

The effect of dual-task cost on strategy execution in arithmetic with event-related potentials.

The present study adopted a dual-task paradigm manipulating operand presentation sequence (continuous vs. discontinuous) and a no-choice strategy adoption approach to investigate how stimulus presentation and response-related processes modulate strategy execution in dual-task scenarios. Participants completed a series of two-digit addition computational estimation tasks, in which they were required to use either the rounding-down (RD) strategy (e.g., calculating 50 + 80=130 for the problem 54 + 89) or the rounding-up (RU) strategy (e.g., calculating 60 + 90=150 for 54 + 89). These tasks were a

Dual-task effects on spatiotemporal, kinematic, and kinetic parameters and their variability during running.

BACKGROUND: Running in real-world environments often requires using cognitive resources simultaneously with the motor task (dual tasking, DT). Limited existing evidence suggests that DT reduces running speed. Movement variability is essential for a healthy, adaptable motor system. DT has been shown to affect movement variability during walking. Nonetheless, it remains unclear how DT affects spatiotemporal, kinematic, and kinetic parameters and their variability during running. RESEARCH QUESTION: Does DT affect spatiotemporal, kinematic, and kinetic measures and their variability during runnin
