Scalable nanofocusing heterojunctions for raptor-inspired on-chip vision perception.

Biological visual systems provide a blueprint for intelligent perception in complex dynamic environments. Inspired by the optical role of retinal oil droplets in raptor vision, we report a plasmonic nanofocusing synaptic array (PNSA) for bioinspired visual sensing and motion perception. The pivotal design is a wafer-scale Au@MoS2 core-shell heterojunction that enhances light concentration like the retinal oil droplets of raptors. Leveraging strong localized surface plasmon resonance in the Au core and efficient hot-carrier generation in the MoS2 shell, the PNSA exhibits an ultrafast relaxation

Carleman approximation based adaptive optimal control design of nonlinear systems: A three-phase policy iteration approach.

As one efficient algorithm in adaptive dynamic programming to address adaptive optimal control problems, policy iteration always involves an initial admissible control guess during iteration. Such an initialization process is nontrivial, especially for unstable systems or when system dynamics are totally unknown. To circumvent this limitation, this paper develops a novel adaptive optimal controller design scheme for continuous-time nonlinear systems through neural network-based policy iteration. By employing Carleman linearization, we lift the nonlinear model into a bilinear form, which allows

Movement-responsive deep brain stimulation for Parkinson's disease using a remotely optimized neural decoder.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has garnered widespread use as an effective treatment for advanced Parkinson's disease. Conventional DBS (cDBS) provides electrical stimulation to the basal ganglia at fixed amplitude and frequency, yet patients' therapeutic needs are often dynamic with residual symptom fluctuations or side effects. Adaptive DBS (aDBS) is an emerging technology that modulates stimulation with respect to real-time clinical, physiological or behavioural states, enabling therapy to dynamically align with patient-specific symptoms. Here we report an aDBS algorithm intended to mitigate

"I Think Peer Support Helps to Demystify People Who Have Mental Health Issues and Helps to Remove That Stigma": Exploring the Defining Characteristics and Related Challenges of Youth Peer Support Through Participatory Research.

Despite the emerging body of literature on the benefits of youth peer support, there is also evidence that peer support can have unintended negative impacts on peers themselves. It is important to explore what aspects of the peer role contribute to these difficulties in order to mitigate risks. This paper uses a participatory approach to examine the unique attributes of youth peer practice and the related challenges. We conducted semi-structured interviews and focus groups with both peer and non-peer staff from a community-based youth mental health program that provides peer support services (

Receding horizon control strategy for an electric vehicle with dual-motor coupling system in consideration of stochastic vehicle mass.

Additional degrees of freedom existed in dual-motor coupling system bring considerable challenge to the optimal control of electric vehicles. Moreover, the stochastic characteristic of vehicle mass can further increase this challenge. A receding horizon control (RHC) strategy in consideration of stochastic vehicle mass is proposed in this study to respond to this challenge. Aiming at an electric vehicle with dual-motor coupling, a Markov chain is firstly deployed to predict future driving conditions by a formulated state transition probability matrix, based on historical driving cycles in real

Aetiology and pathogenesis of IUGR.

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is a major cause of perinatal mortality and morbidity. A complex and dynamic interaction of maternal, placental and fetal environment is involved in ensuring normal fetal growth. An imbalance or lack of coordination in this complex system may lead to IUGR. Animal studies have given us an insight into some aspects of the basic pathophysiology of IUGR, and recent technologies such as Doppler studies of maternal and fetal vessels have added further information. The aetiologies of IUGR are diverse, involving multiple complex mechanisms, which make understandi

Biofluid-Programmed Biological Identity of Nanocarriers: Consequences for Drug Targeting and Reproducible Delivery.

Nanocarriers are commonly designed and evaluated based on their physicochemical properties, including size, morphology, surface charge, composition, ligand density, drug loading, and release behavior. After administration, however, nanocarrier surfaces are rapidly remodeled by proteins, lipids, metabolites, enzymes, mucins, salts, and immune components present in systemic, mucosal, luminal, and disease-associated biofluids, thereby generating an acquired biological identity. Rather than focusing predominantly on plasma protein coronas or individual exposure environments, this review integrates

Redox-Activated Electronic Bridges Enabling Selective Photophysical Coupling via Quantum Dot-Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework S-Scheme Heterojunction.

The precise regulation of photophysical interaction between multiple emissive domains remains a fundamental challenge in the design of advanced luminescent materials. Here, a quantum dot-hydrogen-bonded organic framework (QD-HOF) assembly is developed in which the glutathione redox pair functions as a redox-activated electronic bridge to program interdomain coupling. Reduced glutathione establishes an efficient bridging pathway between CdTe quantum dots and triazine-based TB-HOF, activating dual emissive channels and generating a pronounced ratiometric photoluminescence response. In contrast,

Efficiency maximization of fuel cell electric bus using asymmetric multi-stack fuel cells.

Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) have been widely studied as alternative ecofriendly vehicles based on multi-stack fuel cell (MFC) systems. An MFC system has the advantages of considerable efficiency, reliability, and durability compared with a single-stack fuel cell system. In this study, a novel MFC concept with an asymmetric structure is proposed to maximize the efficiency of a fuel cell electric bus (FCEB). The proposed concept was designed with a cascade electrical architecture composed of differently rated power stacks, and the optimal energy distribution between the stacks was determ

The transcriptional landscape of the developing chick trigeminal ganglion.

The trigeminal ganglion is a critical structure in the peripheral nervous system, responsible for transmitting sensations of touch, pain, and temperature from craniofacial regions to the brain. Trigeminal ganglion development depends upon intrinsic cellular programming as well as extrinsic signals exchanged by diverse cell populations. With its complex anatomy and dual cellular origin from cranial placodes and neural crest cells, the trigeminal ganglion offers a rich context for examining diverse biological processes, including cell migration, fate determination, adhesion, and axon guidance. Non-Coding RNAs and Gut Microbiota in the Pathogenesis of Cardiac Arrhythmias: The Latest Update.

Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) are indispensable for adjusting gene expression and genetic programming throughout development and for health as well as cardiovascular diseases. Cardiac arrhythmia is a frequent cardiovascular disease that has a complex pathology. Recent studies have shown that ncRNAs are also associated with cardiac arrhythmias. Many non-coding RNAs and/or genomes have been reported as genetic background for cardiac arrhythmias. In general, arrhythmias may be affected by several functional and structural changes in the myocardium of the heart. Therefore, ncRNAs might be indispensable

PTEN directs developmental and metabolic signaling for innate-like T cell fate and tissue homeostasis.

Phosphatase and tensin homologue (PTEN) is frequently mutated in human cancer, but its roles in lymphopoiesis and tissue homeostasis remain poorly defined. Here we show that PTEN orchestrates a two-step developmental process linking antigen receptor and IL-23-Stat3 signalling to type-17 innate-like T cell generation. Loss of PTEN leads to pronounced accumulation of mature IL-17-producing innate-like T cells in the thymus. IL-23 is essential for their accumulation, and ablation of IL-23 or IL-17 signalling rectifies the reduced survival of female PTEN-haploinsufficient mice that model human pat

Label-free tumor cell screening based on IDO1-mediated tryptophan metabolism at single cell level.

Indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase 1 (IDO1) plays a critical role in inflammatory and immunometabolism programming through catalyzing the oxidation of tryptophan (Trp) into downstream N-formylkynurenine. IDO1 is typically up-regulated in malignant tumors, making it a potential biomarker for cancer diagnosis. Here we show an effective strategy for tumor cell detection by integrating IDO1 activity assay with single cell-encapsulated droplets on a microfluidic platform for high-throughput bioanalysis. Mixed cells, as well as other cofactors, are encapsulated in individual droplets, which act as dynamic

Modeling and dynamic analysis of the worm-like part of an innovative robot applicable in colonoscopy.

BACKGROUND: The pathological conditions of the human colon may lead to cancer of the colon, which is one of the most common diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. Colonoscopy is the best diagnostic technique that can be used in colon cancer detection. However, many people do not accept this method due to the unpleasant experience, i.e. if it is not performed under sedation. As a result, changing the conventional colonoscopy into a robotic procedure seems beneficial. METHODS: In this work, a semi-autonomous device capable of propelling itself along the flexible environment has been introduced

Metabolic fingerprinting of Schistosoma mansoni infection in mice urine with capillary electrophoresis.

Schistosoma mansoni infection in mice has been fingerprinted using CE to study the capabilities of this technique as a diagnostic tool for this parasitic disease. Two modes of separation were used in generating the electrophoretic data, with each untreated urine sample the following methods were applied: (i) a fused-silica capillary, operating with an applied potential of 18 kV, in micellar EKC (MEKC) and (ii) a polyacrylamide-coated capillary, operating with an applied potential of -20 kV under zonal CZE conditions. By combining normal and reverse polarities in the data treatment we have extr

Effects of short foot exercise combined with lower extremity training on dynamic foot function in individuals with flexible flatfoot: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Flexible flatfoot has demonstrated biomechanical linkages between distal and proximal lower extremities. However, supporting evidence is required to investigate the benefits of short foot exercise (SF) and short foot exercise in combination with lower extremity training (SFLE) on dynamic foot function. RESEARCH QUESTION: This study aimed to determine the effects of a 6-week SF, 6-week SFLE, or control condition (no intervention) on dynamic foot function during gait in individuals with flexible flatfoot. "Supersplint": a new dynamic combination splint for the burned hand.

Dynamic splinting for the burned hand is used worldwide. We previously presented a home hand therapy program. This program included a series of dynamic splints made by the occupational therapist for daily use by the patient. The "supersplint" evolved from the need to reduce the time required to manufacture the splints for the home therapy program; it also reduced patient-therapist sessions in the occupational therapy unit. The supersplint provides active-resistive movements of the fingers and thumb. As range of motion progresses, resistance can be increased to strengthen muscles and tendons. T
