Herbal medicine as a complementary therapy for dysmenorrhea: effects on pain and reduction of analgesic use.

OBJECTIVE: Dysmenorrhea is a prevalent gynecological disorder impairing quality of life for women of reproductive age. Although traditional herbal decoctions (THDs) are widely used for dysmenorrhea in Korea, robust real-world evidence regarding their clinical outcomes and safety is limited. This descriptive, hypothesis-generating registry study aimed to examine individualized THDs for dysmenorrhea using registry data from a multicenter observational study. METHODS: This multicenter, prospective observational registry study enrolled women aged 19-65 years with dysmenorrhea from 33 traditional

Efficacy of Zinc Supplementation in the Management of Primary Dysmenorrhea: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Primary dysmenorrhea (PD) is a common condition affecting up to 90% of menstruating women, which often results in significant pain without an underlying pathology. Zinc, recognized for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects through inhibiting prostaglandin production and superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) upregulation, alleviates menstrual pain by preventing uterine spasms and enhancing microcirculation in the endometrium, suggesting its potential as an alternative treatment for primary dysmenorrhea. The goal of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to assess th

Chronic pelvic pain and dysmenorrhea disguising a rare submucosal leiomyoma of the urinary bladder.

Representing 0.43% of all urinary bladder neoplasms, leiomyomas are rare mesenchymal tumours with a benign pathophysiology. There have only been approximately 250 cases published on this subject, necessitating further inquiry into this disease and effective management protocols. Treatment options may include a broad spectrum of surgical interventions, from minimally invasive resection to radical cystectomy, depending on the location, size and symptoms associated with the tumour. To date, few cases of leiomyoma have resulted in recurrence after removal, and zero have reported malignant transfor

Women with dysmenorrhea are hypersensitive to experimental deep muscle pain across the menstrual cycle.

UNLABELLED: Primary dysmenorrhea is a common painful condition in women that recurs every month across the reproductive years. The recurrent nociceptive input into the central nervous system that occurs during menstruation each month in women with dysmenorrhea is hypothesized to lead to increased sensitivity to painful stimuli. We investigated whether women with primary dysmenorrhea are hyperalgesic to deep muscle pain induced by a cleanly nociceptive method of hypertonic saline injection. Pain stimulation was applied both within an area of referred menstrual pain (lower back) and at a remote

Effect of short-term, low-dose treatment with tamoxifen in patients with primary dysmenorrhea.

Current treatment of painful periods and other symptoms related to primary dysmenorrhea (PD) is usually commenced with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or oral contraceptives, which fails in about 10% of affected patients. Tamoxifen, a selective estrogen-receptor modulator (SERM), has been demonstrated to directly inhibit uterine contractions, causing improvement in uterine blood flow. It could be considered for application in selected groups of dysmenorrheic patients, for instance carriers of breast cancer-associated antigen (BRCA) genes, breast cancer survivors or women with advanced en

Characteristics of pain empathic networks in healthy and primary dysmenorrhea women: an fMRI study.

Pain empathy enables us to understand and share how others feel pain. Few studies have investigated pain empathy-related functional interactions at the whole-brain level across all networks. Additionally, women with primary dysmenorrhea (PDM) have abnormal pain empathy, and the association among the whole-brain functional network, pain, and pain empathy remain unclear. Using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and machine learning analysis, we identified the brain functional network connectivity (FNC)-based features that are associated with pain empathy in two studies.
