Acoustic reflex characteristics in spastic dysphonia.

Acoustic reflex characteristics were studied in six persons with spastic dysphonia. Two methods of analysis were used: (1) a double-blind qualitative judgment of acoustic reflex recordings, and (2) a quantitative analysis of specific temporal characteristics of the acoustic reflexes. Judgments of reflex recordings did not reliably differentiate spastic dysphonia subjects from controls. An analysis of five latency measures revealed a difference between groups only in one measure, reflex contraction time.

Prevalence of Obesity in Patients with Dysphonia.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence of obesity in patients with dysphonia and the association between Body Mass Index (BMI) and the Voice Handicap Index-10 (VHI-10). MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a retrospective study that included 304 patients who visited the senior author's Otolaryngology practice between the years 2018 and 2020. Patients were divided into two groups, those presenting for dysphonia and those presenting for other otolaryngologic complaints (Controls). Patients were also stratified as Normal weight (BMI < 25 kg/m2) vs. Overweight (BMI between 25-30 kg/m2), vs. Obese (BMI

Pediatric dysphonia: It's not about the nodules.

OBJECTIVE: Despite the fact that vocal nodules are the most common cause of chronic dysphonia in children, uncertainty and lack of consensus complicates practically every diagnostic and management decision. Selecting an optimal staging system is fundamental to understanding a disease process, mandatory for uniform reporting, and crucial to predicting natural history and treatment outcomes. The ideal prognostic model for vocal nodules is under intense debate. The purpose of this study was to analyze the predictive power of vocal nodule grade to severity of voice metrics in children. METHODS: S

Characteristics of Functional Dysphonia in Children.

OBJECTIVE: Functional dysphonia refers to a voice disorder without organic laryngeal disease. In this article, the clinical features and therapeutic strategies of functional dysphonia in children were investigated. METHOD: Retrospective analysis of 595 cases of children with dysphonia 3-18 years of age, including 42 patients diagnosed with functional dysphonia. The patients were distributed by age into four groups:3-6, 7-10, 11-14, 15-18 years. The clinical features, laryngeal signs, voice characteristics, pediatric voice handicap index, and therapeutic effects were analyzed. RESULT: In this

The epidemiology of dysphonia in the aging population.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The expanding elderly population continues to exert profound effects on the United States healthcare delivery system. This review summarizes the epidemiology of dysphonia in the aging population as well as its impact on quality of life and the emerging challenges of managing elderly patients with voice disorders. RECENT FINDINGS: Although often underreported, dysphonia is present in as many as one in three elderly patients. The differential diagnosis for dysphonia in an aging patient is broad, and multifactorial causes are common. In the elderly, dysphonia exerts significan

[Evaluation of dysphonia--a multiparametric approach].

Voice evaluation is based on perceptive analysis of voice quality and on instrumental assessments, which comprise acoustic and aerodynamic sound measures. Even though perceptive evaluation is considered the gold standard for voice evaluation, it is biased by its subjective nature. Despite the fact that instrumental analysis is considered objective, it has limited reliability. This is why the integration of these two methods into a multiparametric analysis allows a more broad range diagnostic approach for dysphonia.

Palliative treatment of dysphonia and dysarthria.

The focus of this article is the palliative treatment of a variety of dysphonic conditions. Symptomatic relief of hoarseness can be achieved by voice therapy, augmentative alternative communication modalities, and surgery. The causes of dysphonia addressed herein include amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, stroke, head and neck cancers requiring glossectomy or laryngectomy, unilateral vocal fold paralysis, and presbyphonia. Palliative treatment of dysphonia and voice disorders provides symptomatic relief but not a cure of the underlying disease state. For th

The role of experience on judgments of dysphonia.

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of the study were (1) to determine differences in judgments of overall severity (OS) and vocal effort (VE) of dysphonic speech when judgments were made by experienced and inexperienced listeners, and when self-rated by individuals with dysphonia; and (2) to determine relationships between auditory-perceptual judgments of voice and voice handicap. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective and exploratory. METHODS: Twenty speakers with dysphonia and four normal controls provided speech recordings. Participants judged their own speech samples for OS and VE and completed the Voice Han

Perceptual and laboratory assessment of dysphonia.

The voice laboratory is an essential tool in the voice clinic. It provides a functional diagnosis of disturbed voice production, demonstrating the deviant characteristics, limitations, and possibilities for change. As voice is multidimensional, several aspects need to be documented, quantified, and analyzed: perception, stroboscopy, aerodynamics, acoustics, self-evaluation by the patient, and in specific cases, physiologic signals, such as electroglottography, flow glottography, nasometry, and electromyography. Effectiveness and outcome studies rely on such data.

[Gastroesophageal reflux and dysphonia in children].

UNLABELLED: With the exception of congenital anomalies, the aetiology of dysphonia in children is often unknown. Yet, in adults, GOR has been shown to play an important role. 22 children (aged between 2 and 14 years, 14 boys and 8 girls), who had been suffering from a chronic dysphonia for more than six months were seen at consultation. After a clinical ENT examination including a fibreoptic laryngoscopy, each child had a long duration pH-study that lasted approximately 24 hours. Using the classical criteria for GOR, a pathological GOR was discovered in 14 children, ie 64%. Analysis of the pH

[Course of benign dysphonia in children].

The study of a population of 45 children by examining their speech before and after puberty showed that at puberty there was no subjective complaint in 56% as far as nodules were concerned, there were normal laryngeal appearances in 80% of males compared with only 21% in females after microsurgery. This may lead to the conclusion that nodules in girls persist into adulthood, whereas those in boys tend not to persist, especially if they have had the benefit of speech therapy.

Evaluation of dysphonia in a children's choir.

This study isolates the voice problems of 99 (40 male, 59 female) children choir singers (age range: 8-14), by applying and validating a simple method for classifying the singing voice. The prevalence of dysphonia was 20.2%. A singing range of fewer than 18 semitones is considered to suggest dysphonia (sensitivity of 80% and specificity of 95%). The validity of the method and its ease of application are discussed. We conclude that voice classification is necessary for all children who sing and that phoniatric examination of dysphonic children is imperative, with special attention given to thos

[The child with dysphonia and its rehabilitation].

The purpose of this article is to answer the following questions: whom to rehabilitate and when? As from when, and on what criteria? For what goal and how? For how long? With what results? The author describes a procedure based on a system of values or a philosophy or rehabilitation consisting of offering the child an improved being and an encounter with his or her voice to get to like it.

Diagnosis and management of ventricular dysphonia.

Ventricular phonation may develop on a functional level, or it may occur as an alternative voice for the patient who has an organic disease of the true vocal folds. Three cases that represent iatrogenic, traumatic, and neurologic forms of the disorder are reported. Diagnosis, treatment, and guidelines for follow-up speech therapy are discussed.
