Few studies have utilized both categorical and dimensional measures of psychopathology in children with epilepsy. We evaluated 173 children (88 males, 85 females; mean age 11.7y [SD 1.8]; range 9-14y) who had epilepsy (generalized 36%, partial 61%) for at least 6 months. The primary caregiver completed a dimensional measure, the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), and a categorical measure, either the Child Symptom Inventory (CSI) or the Adolescent Symptom Inventory (ASI). Correlation coefficients were computed between the CBCL scores and CSI/ASI symptom scores. For all children, diagnostic risk

BACKGROUND: Akiskal and Mallya (Psychopharmacol Bull. 1987;23:68-73) proposed criteria defining 4 affective temperaments-hyperthymic, irritable, cyclothymic, and dysthymic. This study aims to develop and validate, using a 3-point rating scale, a short questionnaire that assesses these temperaments.
METHODS: The Affective Temperament Questionnaire (ATQ) was administered to a family-based sample of individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar disorder (BP), or no mood disorder (N = 378). Factor analyses, internal consistency, and analysis of variance were undertaken to examine the

Data from the Children in the Community Study, a prospective longitudinal investigation, were used to investigate the association of personality disorder (PD) traits, evident by early adulthood, with risk for the development of unipolar depressive disorders by middle adulthood. Antisocial, borderline, dependent, depressive, histrionic, and schizotypal PD traits, identified between ages 14 and 22, were significantly associated with risk for dysthymic disorder (DD) or major depressive disorder (MDD) by a mean age of 33 after a history of unipolar depression and other psychiatric disorder was con

Twenty-eight dysthymic patients (82.1% with personality disorders) were investigated with questionnaires for personality and depression before and after treatment. When in asymptomatic state, defined by clinical criteria and HAM-D score 6 or lower, the personality profile of 15 patients (group I) was significantly changed from the one before treatment (avoidant, passive-aggressive, borderline and schizotypal dimensions were lower, and narcissistic dimension higher [P < 0.01]). Thirteen patients (group II) had an unchanged profile. The first group showed significant state-trait dependence, espe

The clinical properties of tianeptine have been assessed in double-blind controlled studies, which involved depressed patients fulfilling DSM-III criteria for either major depression--single episode or recurrent (without melancholia and psychotic features)--or dysthymic disorder--with or without an additional diagnosis of alcohol abuse or dependence. Five studies have compared tianeptine with reference antidepressants: its efficacy has been found to be similar to that of amitriptyline in depressed out-patients. However, these data need to be confirmed by other controlled trials v. reference dr

The frequency with which symptoms of depression are found among subjects with either a lifetime diagnosis of depression or dysthymia and among subjects with no psychiatric disorders, are analysed. The data is derived from a large study (n = 862) on the lifetime prevalence of mental disorders which was conducted in Iceland. The survey instrument was the NIMH-Diagnostic Interview Schedule (DIS). Results from 379 subjects are reported in this study, these subjects have either experienced a Major Depressive Episode (n = 46), dysthymia (n = 32) or have no psychiatric disorder (n = 301). OBJECTIVE: Numerous double-blind studies have assessed the efficacy of antidepressants in treating chronic depressive disorder, including dysthymic disorder, low-grade chronic depression. However, there are no double-blind, placebo-controlled studies of serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors in chronic depressive disorder.
METHOD: Outpatients with chronic depressive disorder, but without concurrent major depressive disorder (MDD), were randomly assigned to prospective double-blind duloxetine (beginning at 30 mg/d, increased to a maximum dose of 120 mg/d) versus placebo for 10 weeks. Inc

Diagnostic comorbidity is the rule rather than the exception in both DSM-IV and ICD-10. Three types of comorbidity include true comorbidity (clinically distinct entities), artifactual comorbidity (a byproduct of the DSM/ICD strategy to split categorical diagnoses) and spurious comorbidity. DSM has established 'mutually exclusive' relationships between disorders to reduce such spurious comorbidity. Four types of mutually exclusive relationships are identified: (1) between disorders that are on different levels of the Kraepelinian-defined hierarchy (e.g., schizophrenia and major depressive disor

As part of a longitudinal nosologic study of major depressive disorder (MDD), dysthymic disorder, and adjustment disorder with depressed mood in 104 school-aged probands, the prevalence and consequences of comorbid conduct disorders (CD) were examined. During the index depressive episodes, 16% of the patients had comorbid CD; during the full study observation 23% had CD; and the estimated time-dependent risk of conduct disorder developing was 36% by age 19. For most cases, comorbid CD developed as a complication of the depression and persisted after the depression remitted. Comorbid CD was not

Examined the impact of patient diagnosis on countertransferential responses to hypothetical latency-aged child psychotherapy patients meeting criteria for Dysthymia, Conduct, and Borderline Disorders. Three subtypes of countertransference (CT) were measured: positive (e.g., nurturant feelings), negative (e.g., boredom), and CT-related activity (e.g., tendency to refer patient to another therapist). All three subtypes were found to vary significantly as a function of diagnosis. Of the three diagnostic groups, Dysthymic patients elicited the highest degree of positive CT; Conduct Disorder patien

Previous research has found a relation between social anxiety disorder and alcoholism but recent work found no differences in drinking levels among socially anxious individuals, dysthymics, and normal controls. Using a more sophisticated measure of substance abuse may further explicate the relation between social anxiety and drinking. We examined aspects of substance abuse in treatment-seeking individuals with social anxiety disorder or panic disorder (psychiatric control group) as well as nondisordered individuals (normal control group). We used the Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory-

In late life depression, common comorbid psychiatric disorders are alcohol use, anxiety, and personality disorders. Elderly depressed patients are three to four times more likely to have an alcohol use disorder compared with nondepressed elderly subjects, with a prevalence of 15%-30% in patients with late life major depression. While the presence of a comorbid alcohol use disorder may worsen the prognosis for geriatric depression, limited data suggest that successful treatment of depression combined with reducing alcohol use leads to the best possible outcomes. Most studies show that the overa

Antidepressants can increase the spontaneous risk of hypomania or mania when used for treatment in affective disorders. When prescribed as an antidepressant, bupropion is generally considered to have a lower relative risk of inducing mood shifts. We describe the case of a 67-year-old man known for dysthymic disorder in remission on quetiapine and venlafaxine who experienced a first lifetime episode of hypomania with the introduction of bupropion SR for smoking cessation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of bupropion-induced mood shift when used specifically for nicot

IMPORTANCE: With the advent of highly effective antiretroviral therapy and improved survival, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected people are living longer and are now at an increased risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). There is an urgent need to identify novel risk factors and primary prevention approaches for CVD in HIV. Although depression is prevalent in HIV-infected adults and is associated with future CVD in the general population, its association with CVD events has not been examined in the HIV-infected population.
OBJECTIVE: To examine whether depressive disorders are prospe

STUDY QUESTION: Is stepped care compared with usual care effective in preventing the onset of major depressive, dysthymic, and anxiety disorders in older people with visual impairment (caused mainly by age related eye disease) and subthreshold depression and/or anxiety?
METHODS: 265 people aged ≥50 were randomly assigned to a stepped care programme plus usual care (n=131) or usual care only (n=134). Supervised occupational therapists, social workers, and psychologists from low vision rehabilitation organisations delivered the stepped care programme, which comprised watchful waiting, guided se

INTRODUCTION: Comorbidity among mental disorders in the general population is common, affecting more than the 50 % of individuals with a lifetime mental disorder. In Spain, there are no data describing it or its associated risk factors.
METHOD: The ESEMeD-Spain study is an epidemiological study assessing mental disorders in a sample of 5,473 individuals from the general population of Spain aged 18 years or older. The aims of the present study were to evaluate the frequency of mental disorders comorbidity in Spain (assessed with the Composite International Diagnostic Interview: CIDI 3.0) and a

Outpatients diagnosed as borderline (N = 100) were prospectively followed for 6-36 months and examined from phenomenologic developmental, and family history perspectives. At index evaluation, 66 met criteria for recurrent depressive, dysthymic, cyclothymic, or bipolar II disorders, and 16 for those of schizotypal personality. Other subgroups included sociopathic, somatization, panic-agoraphobic, attention deficit, epileptic, and identify disorders. Compared with nonborderline personality controls, borderlines had a significantly elevated risk for major affective but not for schizophrenic break
