BACKGROUND: Eagle syndrome with stroke onset is a rare condition. Carotid stenting of dissected arteries and/or surgical resection of the elongated styloid process are frequently performed; however, there are no definitive criteria for selecting these treatments.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 46-year-old man presented with left hemiplegia. Acute infarction in the right frontal and parietal lobes and bilateral internal carotid artery (ICA) dissection due to the elongated styloid process were diagnosed via magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography angiography. He was treated with stenting of the

An adult bald eagle ( Haliaeetus leucocephalus) presented for nystagmus and an inability to fly. On physical examination, the eagle was open-mouth breathing and tachycardic at 200 beats per minute, had a wrinkled cere and sunken eyes, and was an estimated 10% dehydrated. Additionally, the eagle was extremely weak, with neurologic abnormalities including bilateral proprioceptive deficits, nystagmus, and no pupillary light reflex in the left eye. Despite aggressive treatment, the eagle continued to decline rapidly and subsequently died. On histologic examination, diffuse and widespread infiltrat

Published case studies involving diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) along with symptomatic ossification of the stylohyoid ligament, or "Eagle syndrome," are rare. In this report, we document a case of bilateral Eagle syndrome and advanced DISH in the cervical spine of an 80-year-old man who presented with severe neck stiffness and intermittent asphyxia. The key imaging and clinical features of this disorder are also described.

A hatching-year bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) was presented for clinical examination after being found unable to fly. Upon admission, routine wet-mount microscopy detected no trichomonads. Five months later, oral cavity inspection found no abnormalities, but the eagle was swabbed for research on trichomonosis in maritime birds. The swab was used to inoculate an InPouch TF culture and trichomonads were visible within 24 hr. Genotyping (ITS) revealed a Trichomonas isolate that was 100% identical to an isolate from a bearded vulture (Gypaetus barbatus) from the Czech Republic. The eagle w

We present the first ever reported observations of a hunting African crowned eagle Stephanoaetus coronatus being killed by a primate, in the Udzungwa Mountains of south-central Tanzania. An adult female eagle launched an attack on a young Sanje mangabey Cercocebus sanjei who was feeding in a tree, but was intercepted and bitten by an adult mangabey who was feeding nearby. The adult mangabey and the eagle then fell together 25 m to the forest floor below. The eagle subsequently died from her injuries, while the mangabey escaped and is thought to have survived. This rare event is briefly discuss

The endocrine pancreas of the Australian wedge-tailed eagle, Aquila audax, was investigated by means of immunocytochemistry using the PAP method at the light microscopic level. Serial paraffin sections were stained with haematoxylin and eosin, aldehyde fuchsin, and Grimelius' silver impregnation method in each of the lobes-dorsal, ventral, third and splenic lobes to show the morphology of the islet, B cells, and A cells respectively. The islets were of the 'mixed type' with no segregation into 'light' and 'dark' islets as in other birds studies (Falkmer and Ostberg, 1977). Semithin serial plas

Carotid-type Eagle syndrome should be considered in patients with unexplained presyncope, particularly when symptoms are position-dependent. High-resolution CT is essential for identifying elongated styloid processes and their relationship to the carotid space. Transcervical styloidectomy provides excellent vascular exposure, enabling safe dissection, complete resection, and effective symptom resolution while minimizing neurovascular complications.

BACKGROUND: Although transcervical styloidectomy is an established treatment for Eagle syndrome, the narrow operative corridor can make deep exposure challenging, particularly in patients at higher risk of complications. We report two cases in which neurosurgical microsurgical techniques provided wider and clearer deep visualization than conventional methods.
METHODS: Two patients underwent transcervical styloidectomy using microsurgical techniques commonly employed in neurosurgery: one with Eagle syndrome-related internal carotid artery dissection on antiplatelet therapy, and the other with

Microbes have evolved a variety of strategies to survive exposure to naturally occurring and synthetic antimicrobials. These strategies have been investigated extensively in model bacterial organisms, whereas less is known about under explored pathogenic bacteria such as bacteria within the Yersinia genus. In this study, we investigated the inhibitory effect and bactericidal activity of antibiotics from five different classes and of the disinfectant hydrogen peroxide against Yersinia pseudotuberculosis, the ancestral species from which Yersinia pestis and Yersinia enterocolitica have emerged.

An unusual case of a patient with bilateral carotid artery dissection caused by compression from elongated styloid processes is presented. The diagnosis was overlooked 8 years earlier. Eagle syndrome, marked by an elongated styloid process, can result in cervical artery dissection, highlighting the significance of recognizing this correlation in recurrent cases, which occur more frequently than idiopathic internal carotid artery dissections.

Background: Impingement of an elongated styloid process (ESP) or calcified stylohyoid ligament on surrounding neck structures defines Eagle syndrome. The vascular variant, also called stylocarotid syndrome, results from impingement of vascular structures and remains poorly known among physicians. Research Design: We report our own experience and review the literature in order to clarify the diagnostic and therapeutic management. Patients with vascular events in relation to an ESP and hospitalized at our institution were extracted from our databank and retrospectively reviewed. We also performe

The inverse kinematics of robotic manipulators involves determining an appropriate joint configuration to achieve a specified end-effector position. This problem is challenging because the inverse kinematics of manipulators are highly nonlinear and complexly coupled. To address this challenge, the bald eagle search optimization algorithm is introduced. This algorithm combines the advantages of evolutionary and swarm techniques, making it more effective at solving nonlinear problems and improving search efficiency. Due to the tendency of the algorithm to fall into local optima, the Lévy flight

Objectives Elongation of the styloid process causes different symptoms with varying degrees of severity in some people. This elongation can be detected haply during routine reading of panoramic X-ray. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence rate of Eagle's syndrome among a population from Damascus, Syria, and to evaluate the accompanying clinical symptoms. Methods This is a descriptive epidemiological study including 3,962 patients who attended one of the many dental clinics of educational and/or healthcare institutions in Damascus. All digital panoramic radiographs were reviewed,

BACKGROUND: Elongation of the styloid process associated with oropharyngeal pain and dysphagia is known as Eagle's syndrome, a condition whose pathophysiology is still a matter of debate. Given its low prevalence and complex symptomatology, this syndrome is often misdiagnosed, leading to chronic pain and medical nomadism. A 51-year-old woman of African origin with 3-year history of left-side oropharyngeal pain and worsening dysphagia consulted several health professionals. Medical and surgical treatments, including a sinus surgery and the extraction of three healthy teeth, did not improve her

Eagle's syndrome is a collection of symptoms due to abnormal and/or elongated styloid process. This can irritate the various neurovascular structures that lie in its close proximity, mainly the glossopharyngeal nerve, leading to odynophagia, dysphagia, foreign body sensation, cervicofacial pain, and headache. It is a diagnosis of exclusion and needs high degree of clinical suspicion. It is a rare condition with no reported incidence in the Bhutanese population so far. In this article, we present a case of elongated styloid process that was causing persistent and troublesome orofacial pain in a

Eagle's syndrome is a rare collection of symptoms that occur secondary to an elongated styloid process or calcified stylohyoid ligament irritating its surrounding structures. Classically, this presents as unilateral throat pain or rarely, as acute neurological symptoms secondary to compression of the internal carotid artery: so called 'stylocarotid syndrome'. Significant neurological events in teenagers, secondary to Eagle syndrome have not been reported. We discuss the rare case of a teenage boy, diagnosed with right internal carotid artery dissection and middle cerebral artery infarction, wi

Eagle's syndrome (ES) is characterised by an abnormally elongated styloid process. It remains a complex pathology and the ophthalmological symptoms are relatively rare. Herein, we report two cases who presented to our clinic with unilateral and painful Horner's syndrome. Computed tomography scanning showed the presence of ES with unilateral extrinsic compression of the sympathetic plexus by the styloid.
