BACKGROUND: Total auricular reconstruction of microtia with autogenous costal cartilage poses one of the most demanding challenges in plastic and reconstructive surgery because of the unique and complex three-dimensional shape of the auricle. Attaining an ideal result of the constructed ear depends primarily on the fabricated cartilaginous ear framework. In this article, the authors discuss the essential modifications of ear framework grafting. The authors elaborate the relevant anatomical details for a harmonious ear framework and present a favorable result of the contour of the reconstructed

INTRODUCTION: Little evidence is available on the natural course of osteoarthritis (OA) development and the genes that protect and predispose individuals to it. This study was designed to compare strain-dependent development of OA and its association with tissue regeneration in mice. Two recombinant inbred lines LGXSM-6 and LGXSM-33 generated from LG/J and SM/J intercross were used. Previous studies indicated that LGXSM-6 can regenerate both articular cartilage and ear hole punch while LGXSM-33 cannot.
METHODS: Transection of the medial meniscotibial ligament was performed on 10-week-old male

Reconstruction of upper eyelid defects should aim for a moveable lid with perfect corneal protection and good aesthetic quality. Numerous procedures to reconstruct large upper eyelid defects have been reported, but these methods require 2-stage procedures. A new method for reconstructing full-thickness upper eyelid defects after tumor excision in a single stage was presented in this study. The preferred technique uses excess skin as an advancement flap together with an ear cartilage graft for the lining. Reconstruction was performed with an advancement flap using excess skin and ear cartilage

Reconstruction of the microtic auricle is a difficult process requiring considerable experience and dedication to detail. It is a multistage proposition requiring the talents of both the reconstructive surgeon and the otologic surgeon. Reconstruction of the external ear usually precedes the reconstruction of the middle ear. Often, a template is used by the reconstructive surgeon to aid in this complicated process. Traditionally, templates used by the reconstructive surgeon have been 2 dimensional (usually x-ray paper) and made from the opposite normal ear or another normal ear in cases of bila

OBJECTIVES: Ear deformity caused by burns is one of the most difficult types of deformity to treat with plastic surgery, and the reconstruction of burned ears undoubtedly remains a substantial challenge. This study aims to report the therapeutic regime of using a superficial temporal fascial flap to cover the framework in burned ear reconstruction.
METHODS: Autologous costal cartilage was used to form the ear framework in all of the reconstruction cases. A superficial temporal fascial flap was used as soft tissue to cover the ear scaffold.
RESULTS: Five patients with 6 ears were included in

BACKGROUND: It is very important for congenital microtia patients to achieve better aesthetic appearance, craniofacial balance and mental health through auricular reconstruction. But there are great challenges for plastic surgeons on how to perform this technique in adult patients with tough and rigid rib cartilage because of the different extent of calcification. To lower the harvest of the cartilage and reduce the suffering during the operation, in this study, we report a modified two-step method for adult patients who suffered rib cartilage calcification in auricular reconstruction.

A 5-year-old cat presented with haemorrhagic left aural discharge, 2 days following a road traffic accident. Otoscopic examination identified disruption of the external ear canal at the auricular/annular cartilage junction. This was managed by total ear canal ablation and lateral bulla osteotomy. Left sided facial nerve deficits were present following surgery. Eighteen months postoperatively there were no auricular problems, however facial nerve deficits persisted. There are no previous reports describing management of acute separation at the auricular/annular cartilage junction of the externa

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The application of cartilage in tympanoplasty has been generally accepted, because cartilage as a bradytrophic tissue allows stable and functionally reliable reconstruction of the eardrum even in difficult pathological conditions (such as subtotal defects, tympanosclerosis etc.). A special surgical technique using small cartilaginous chips for the reconstruction of the eardrum has been developed by J. Heermann, who introduced it as Palisade Cartilage Tympanoplasty (PCT). Although being increasingly applied in otosurgery, this technique has to date neither been evaluat

The acoustic and mechanical properties of silk membranes of different thicknesses were tested to determine their suitability as a repair material for tympanic membrane perforations. Membranes of different thickness (10-100μm) were tested to determine their frequency response and their resistance to pressure loads in a simulated ear canal model. Their mechanical rigidity to pressure loads was confirmed by tensile testing. These membranes were tested alongside animal cartilage, currently the strongest available myringoplasty graft as well as paper, which is commonly used for simpler procedures.

To date, there is no optimal way to reconstruct an external ear in cases of microtia or after trauma or burns damaging the external ear. However, success in the area of tissue engineering has indicated that autologous elastic cartilage produced in vitro might be of great importance in the future treatment of these patients. In the present study we have engineered human, elastic cartilage in vitro by culturing chondrocytes in fibrin glue. Furthermore, the engineered elastic cartilage was seeded with human keratinocytes to investigate the possibility of combining these two tissues into one integ

Relapsing polychondritis is a rare multisystemic disease, of unknown origin, characterized by recurrent swelling, destruction of cartilages and connective tissue mainly of the ear and nose cartilages. Complications of the airways (laryngeal and tracheal stenosis) occur late in the disease. We present a case of a male with relapsing polychondritis which appeared initially as a tracheal stenosis (laryngeal stridor, exertional dyspnea) followed by cutaneous lesions, swelling of the ear and nose cartilage (deformity of nose septum in the shape of a saddle). Computerized tomography of the neck show

Background: An implant (porous polyethylene) is an alternative to rib cartilage for microtia reconstruction but carries a risk of extrusion. Objective: To evaluate the outcome of a hybrid framework of implant with rib cartilage for microtia reconstruction. Methods: Patients who underwent Nagata's technique for microtia reconstruction were reviewed for complications and aesthetic score. In stage 1, a rib cartilage framework or a hybrid framework of implant with rib cartilage was used. In stage 2, the framework was elevated and supported by an implant for projection. Postoperative outcomes were

Trauma and tumor are the causes of acquired ear defects that surgeons are frequently called on to treat. Trauma may result in hematoma or laceration of the ear. In addition, both trauma and tumor excision may result in skin or cartilage loss. Prevention of recurrence depends on complete excision of the tumor m both lateral margins and depth. Tumors of the ear (as well as the nose) are often incompletely excised because of the difficulty in reconstruction. The absence of subcutaneous tissue in the ear allows fixation and perichondrial involvement to occur early. The tumor affinity for perichond

Patient satisfaction after surgery to correct the prominent ear relates to the degree of retroposition of the ear. Angular breaks in the cartilage seen with other cartilage-transecting procedures (and even after conchal resections), which are noticed by patients, led to the development of this technique. It is an easy operative technique that may be modified to suit all prominent ears, including the constricted cup ear, and it does not leave any sharp, visible ridges in the region of the anti-helix or concha. The procedure combines and modifies a number of techniques that have been described p

Background: The treatment of microtia or acquired ear deformities by surgery is a significant challenge for plastic and ENT surgeons; one of the most difficult points is constructing the scaffold for auricular reconstruction. As a type of cell with multiple differentiation potentials, stem cells play an essential role in the construction of cartilage scaffolds, and therefore have received widespread attention in ear reconstructive research. Methods: A literature search was conducted for peer-reviewed articles between 2005 and 2023 with the following keywords: stem cells; auricular cartilage; e

The objective of the study was to assess the functional results after type I tympanoplasty with temporal muscle fascia, perichondrium/cartilage island and cartilage palisades. The records of 120 patients who underwent type I tympanoplasty operation between January 2003 and June 2007 were retrospectively reviewed. This study aimed to comprise a homogeneous group of patients to make the comparisons as accurate as possible. For this purpose, primary tympanoplasty cases with subtotal perforations, intact ossicular chain, dry ear for a period of at least 1 month, and normal middle ear mucosa were i

BACKGROUND: Prominent ears negatively impact the psychological and social health of individuals. Despite the availability of different surgical correction methods for this congenital condition, many of these techniques might result in significant risks of complications and the condition often reappears. Herein, we present log-term outcomes of our suture-free method that employs various strategies to reduce these risks and prevent recurrences.
METHODS: We analyzed the results of patients who had a bilateral double triangular cartilage excision otoplasty as an outpatient procedure. This previou
