The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of otologic symptoms and their relationship to orofacial signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorder (TMD), and the effect of orofacial myofunctional therapy. The study was conducted on eight asymptomatic subjects (Group C) and 20 subjects with articular TMD, randomly distributed over two groups: one treated using orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT Group) and a control group with TMD (Group CTMD). Patient selection was based upon the Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (RDC/TMD). All subjects submitted to a clinical examination wit

BACKGROUND: Bronchoscopy is a fundamental and generally safe interventional procedure in respiratory medicine, with recognized complications being predominantly confined to the airways. Traumatic tympanic membrane perforation, while a common form of barotrauma, is exceptionally rarely associated with bronchoscopy. This report describes a case of bilateral tympanic membrane perforation complicating bronchoscopy, aiming to enhance clinicians'awareness of this uncommon iatrogenic injury.

BACKGROUND: Orthognathic surgery is an established procedure for correcting skeletal dentofacial deformities, with proven benefits for occlusion, facial esthetics, and airway function. Despite its overall safety, it can be associated with complications, including transient or persistent auditory alterations, such as otalgia, tinnitus, and Eustachian tube dysfunction. These changes may result from altered peritubal muscle tension, surgical trauma, postoperative edema, or pre-existing conditions, like serous otitis media.
OBJECTIVES: To systematically review and quantitatively synthesize the in

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to form astute deductions regarding the presentation, treatment and mortality of otogenic brain complications.
METHODS: A systematic literature search of four medical databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Scopus) was conducted. Studies associated with otogenic brain complications were considered eligible. Fixed- and random-effects model meta-analysis was developed to assess the proportion estimate for each outcome individually.
RESULTS: Twenty-eight studies, with 1650 patients in total, were included. In 66 per cent of patients there was a known history of

Glossopharyngeal neuralgia (GPN) is an uncommon facial pain syndrome and is characterized by paroxysms of excruciating pain in the distributions of the auricular and pharyngeal branches of cranial nerves IX and X. Glossopharyngeal neuralgia characterized by otalgia alone is rare. Herein, the authors analyzed 2 patients with GPN with otalgia as the main clinical manifestation. The clinical features and prognosis of this rare group of patients with GPN were discussed. They both presented with paroxysmal pain in the external auditory meatus and preoperative magnetic resonance imaging suggested th

The incidence of sebaceous carcinoma (SC) in the outer one-third of the external auditory canal is considered extremely rare, and only eight case reports have been published. We present a case of a male patient in his late 70s known case of hypertension on indapamide. His medical history included a postspinal tumour that had been treated with surgery and radiation more than 40 years ago and current complaints of right ear pain and purulent discharge. A right ear soft granular tissue mass was found. Complete debulking of the right ear mass was done in conjunction with middle ear exploration, mo

A healthy 31-year-old train operator presented to our occupational health clinic reporting ear aches, headaches, dizziness, unsteadiness and even slight tinnitus. These symptoms first appeared when the patient started operating from a new train cabin. He described a sudden pressure gradient, experienced on some parts of the trajectory, which might have caused these problems. Although the cabins were equipped with a pressure equalising device, this was usually switched off because of the device creating an uncomfortable feeling in the cabin. The literature describes sudden pressure gradients as

OBJECTIVE: To present the rare case of a young boy with idiopathic intracranial hypertension presenting with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss developing over several months. This was accompanied by headaches, otalgia, tinnitus, and vertigo. Furthermore, we aim to provide a concise review on this matter, as this report represents the second case in literature of pediatric idiopathic intracranial hypertension presenting with hearing loss.
METHODS: Workup of a 9-year-old boy with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss, including (among others) physical examination, audiometry, diagnostic imagi

BACKGROUND: Secondary or referred otalgia can represent a diagnostic challenge to the otolaryngologist. Collectively, dental disorders are the most common causes of secondary otalgia presenting to the ENT clinic, and may account for up to 50 per cent of referred otalgia. Temporomandibular joint dysfunction syndrome represents the most common dental cause of referred otalgia. Decay and pulpal inflammation of posterior teeth can also frequently present as otalgia. The common embryological developmental origin of both oral and dental structures and the ear is responsible for their overlapping sen

A 30-year-old woman with a 10-year history of recurrent bloody diarrhea and documented colitis of the descending colon, consistent with Crohn's disease, presented with an exacerbation of her gastrointestinal disease and an 18-month history of recurrent facial and genital swelling. Her course evolved to include severe ear pain, dysphagia and colonic dysmotility. She was diagnosed with Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome and treated with multiple agents. The neurological aspects of her presentation are highlighted, and the Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome is reviewed.

A small series of pain syndrome patients shows that disturbances of the head and neck motor system can lead to various pain syndromes as the vicious circle between pain and muscle tension is initiated by a triggering factor. These pain syndromes include varying combinations of the following symptoms: headache, referred otalgia, arthralgia of the temporomandibular joint, styloid syndrome, tendopathia of the hyoid bone, carotidynia, cervical dysphagia and probably most patients with superior laryngeal nerve neuralgia or glossopharyngeal neuralgia. A detailed differentiation of those syndromes is

Thirty-one children between the ages of 6 and 16 years with otalgia but normal eardrums were investigated for temporomandibular joint dysfunction. Ear disease was excluded by microscopic examination, pure tone audiometry and impedance tympanometry. Dental disease was excluded by clinical and radiographic examination. Temporomandibular joint dysfunction was diagnosed by finding tenderness of the joint or masticatory muscles in at least two separate sites at one examination. Twenty-one patients were assessed as having joint dysfunction and in 18 of these the diagnosis was made when the child was

BACKGROUND: A woman in her forties developed intermittent pain in her ear and pharynx which worsened when talking and swallowing. Multidisciplinary approach confirmed a rare diagnosis.
CASE PRESENTATION: The patient reported left-sided ear fullness, followed by otalgia and burning pain in the palate. Numbness in the palate and nasal cavity, and soreness upon palpation of the external ear canal were noted upon examination. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with contrast showed a vessel located in close proximity to the glossopharyngeal nerve on the left side. A diagnosis of glossopharyngeal neu

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH) is an underdiagnosed and debilitating condition caused by a spinal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak. Although SIH can lead to substantial morbidity and disability, little data exists about patients' perspectives. Without hearing directly from patients, our understanding of the full experience of having SIH is limited, as is our ability to identify and use appropriate patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) within clinical care and research. The purpose of this study was to conduct qualitative interviews with confirmed SIH pati

The differential diagnosis for an isolated lytic mastoid lesion is broad, encompassing various conditions requiring careful consideration. These include granulomatous disorders such as Langerhans cell histiocytosis and sarcoidosis, neoplastic processes like multiple myeloma, leukemia, lymphoma, and metastases, primary bone diseases such as Paget's disease, fibrous dysplasia, and osteitis fibrosa cystica, as well as infectious causes like osteomyelitis. In this report, we present a patient with otalgia and an isolated lytic mastoid lesion.
