Circadian Control of Host-Microbiome Symbioses.

Life on Earth has evolved under the predictable rotation of the planet, giving rise to intrinsic timing mechanisms that synchronize physiology and behavior with the 24-h day-night cycle. These molecular timing systems organize metabolism, immunity, and cellular renewal into recurring daily programs that optimize energy use and defense. Increasing evidence now reveals that circadian logic extends beyond the host to include its microbial partners. Host feeding rhythms, epithelial renewal, and immune activity impose temporal order on the microbiota, while microbial metabolites and immune signalin

Accurate geometric albedo, shape, and size of Hi'iaka from a stellar occultation.

Stellar occultations, when a distant object passes in front of a star and casts a shadow on Earth, are a powerful tool to probe the physical properties of solar system bodies. They enable precise size and shape measurements and can reveal rings, satellites, atmospheres, or surface features. Here we present results from two stellar occultations by Hi'iaka, dwarf planet Haumea's largest satellite, observed in April 2021. The second event yielded the first documented multi-chord occultation involving a trans-Neptunian satellite other than Charon. Combining these data with photometric observations

The Emergence of an Urable Earth: How Early Planetary Evolution Shaped the Chemical Window for Life's Origin.

Earth's early history provides the only natural record for evaluating how planetary evolution can generate environments capable of initiating life. Here we review early Earth evolution through the lens of urability: the time-dependent capacity of planetary environments to support prebiotic chemistry progressing toward compartmentalized, self-propagating, information-bearing systems. We argue that urability is not a single globally habitable state, but a transient overlap among several coupled dimensions: liquid water availability, permissive temperature, ocean pH and salinity, access to bioess

Tolerances of Deinococcus geothermalis Biofilms and Planktonic Cells Exposed to Space and Simulated Martian Conditions in Low Earth Orbit for Almost Two Years.

Fossilized biofilms represent one of the oldest known confirmations of life on the Earth. The success of microbes in biofilms results from properties that are inherent in the biofilm, including enhanced interaction, protection, and biodiversity. Given the diversity of microbes that live in biofilms in harsh environments on the Earth, it is logical to hypothesize that, if microbes inhabit other bodies in the Universe, there are also biofilms on those bodies. The Biofilm Organisms Surfing Space experiment was conducted as part of the EXPOSE-R2 mission on the International Space Station. The expe

Earthing (grounding) the human body reduces blood viscosity-a major factor in cardiovascular disease.

OBJECTIVES: Emerging research is revealing that direct physical contact of the human body with the surface of the earth (grounding or earthing) has intriguing effects on human physiology and health, including beneficial effects on various cardiovascular risk factors. This study examined effects of 2 hours of grounding on the electrical charge (zeta potential) on red blood cells (RBCs) and the effects on the extent of RBC clumping. DESIGN/INTERVENTIONS: SUBJECTS were grounded with conductive patches on the soles of their feet and palms of their hands. Wires connected the patches to a stainless

The association between phenomena on the sun, geomagnetic activity, meteorological variables, and cardiovascular characteristic of patients with myocardial infarction.

It has been found that solar and geomagnetic activity affects the cardiovascular system. Some evidence has been reported on the increase in the rate of myocardial infarction, stroke and myocardial infarction related deaths during geomagnetic storms. We investigated the association between cardiovascular characteristics of patients, admitted for myocardial infarction with ST elevation (STEMI), and geomagnetic activity (GMA), solar proton events (SPE), solar flares, and meteorological variables during admission. The data of 1,979 patients hospitalized at the Hospital of Lithuanian University of

Research opportunities to advance cardiovascular health through a planetary health lens.

Cardiovascular health (CVH) across the life course requires stable, nurturing environments and a healthy planet. Increasing human demands on the earth's resources destabilize our world's ecosystems, compromising CVH. Unique research opportunities for cardiovascular researchers exist at the intersection of planetary and CVH. Using systems thinking can reveal cardiovascular and planetary health connections and mechanisms of action. For example, meeting global demands for water, food and energy threatens food, water and air quality at the local level, and with it, cardiovascular health. A refined

A second space age spanning omics, platforms and medicine across orbits.

The recent acceleration of commercial, private and multi-national spaceflight has created an unprecedented level of activity in low Earth orbit, concomitant with the largest-ever number of crewed missions entering space and preparations for exploration-class (lasting longer than one year) missions. Such rapid advancement into space from many new companies, countries and space-related entities has enabled a 'second space age'. This era is also poised to leverage, for the first time, modern tools and methods of molecular biology and precision medicine, thus enabling precision aerospace medicine

Is aromatic plants environmental health engineering (APEHE) a leverage point of the earth system?

It is important to note that every ecological niche in an ecosystem is significant. This study aims to assess the importance of medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) in the ecosystem from multiple perspectives. A primary model of Aromatic Plants Environmental Health Engineering (APEHE) has been designed and constructed. The APEHE system was used to collect aerosol compounds, and it was experimentally verified that these compounds have the potential to impact human health by binding to AKT1 as the primary target, and MMP9 and TLR4 as secondary targets. These compounds may indirectly affect human

Cognitive neuroscience in space.

Humans are the most adaptable species on this planet, able to live in vastly different environments on Earth. Space represents the ultimate frontier and a true challenge to human adaptive capabilities. As a group, astronauts and cosmonauts are selected for their ability to work in the highly perilous environment of space, giving their best. Terrestrial research has shown that human cognitive and perceptual motor performances deteriorate under stress. We would expect to observe these effects in space, which currently represents an exceptionally stressful environment for humans. Understanding th

The sun--our friend or foe?

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Sunlight is the major source of the energy on Earth. Visible light, ultraviolet and infrared radiation are necessary to sustain life on our planet. However, besides the range of positive effects, such as photosynthesis in plants, warmth, vision, and synthesis of vitamin D, sunlight may also be responsible for negative biologic effects - sunburn, induction of photodermatoses or carcinogenesis. Ultraviolet is regarded as the major environmental, physical hazard to the human skin. ABBREVIATED DESCRIPTION OF THE STATE OF KNOWLEDGE: The acute clinical effect of ultravio

Detection of visible-wavelength aurora on Mars.

Mars hosts various auroral processes despite the planet's tenuous atmosphere and lack of a global magnetic field. To date, all aurora observations have been at ultraviolet wavelengths from orbit. We describe the discovery of green visible-wavelength aurora, originating from the atomic oxygen line at 557.7 nanometers, detected with the SuperCam and Mastcam-Z instruments on the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover. Near-real-time simulations of a Mars-directed coronal mass ejection (CME) provided sufficient lead-time to schedule an observation with the rover. The emission was observed 3 days after the C

Membrane Lipid Composition and Amino Acid Excretion Patterns of Methanothermococcus okinawensis Grown in the Presence of Inhibitors Detected in the Enceladian Plume.

Lipids and amino acids are regarded as important biomarkers for the search for extraterrestrial life in the Solar System. Such biomarkers may be used to trace methanogenic life on other planets or moons in the Solar System, such as Saturn's icy moon Enceladus. However, little is known about the environmental conditions shaping the synthesis of lipids and amino acids. Here, we present the lipid production and amino acid excretion patterns of the methanogenic archaeon Methanothermococcus okinawensis after exposing it to different multivariate concentrations of the inhibitors ammonium, formaldehy

Aqueous corrosion of phosphide minerals from iron meteorites: a highly reactive source of prebiotic phosphorus on the surface of the early Earth.

We present the results of an experimental study of aqueous corrosion of Fe-phosphide under conditions relevant to the early Earth. The results strongly suggest that iron meteorites were an important source of reactive phosphorus (P), a requirement for the formation of P-based life. We further demonstrate that iron meteorites were an abundant source of phosphide minerals early in Earth history. Phosphide corrosion was studied in five different solutions: deionized water, deionized water buffered with sodium bicarbonate, deionized water with dissolved magnesium and calcium chlorides, deionized w

Depletion of davemaoite in Earth's ambient lower mantle.

The mineralogy of the Earth's lower mantle is fundamental to understanding the planet's formation, composition, evolution, and dynamics. However, uncertainties in the elastic properties and phase transitions of CaSiO₃ davemaoite-the third most abundant phase in a pyrolitic lower mantle-have hindered quantitative links between seismic observations and lower-mantle mineralogy. Here we combine Brillouin spectroscopy with resistively heated diamond anvil cell experiments to measure the sound velocities of CaSiO₃ davemaoite up to 80 GPa and 973 K. We show that the tetragonal-cubic phase transition

Spectroscopic evidence for interstellar ices in comet Hyakutake.

Volatile compounds in comets are the most pristine materials surviving from the time of formation of the Solar System, and thus potentially provide information about conditions that prevailed in the primitive solar nebula. Moreover, comets may have supplied a substantial fraction of the volatiles on the terrestrial planets, perhaps including organic compounds that played a role in the origin of life on Earth. Here we report the detection of hydrogen isocyanide (HNC) in comet Hyakutake. The abundance of HNC relative to hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is very similar to that observed in quiescent interst

Sensing whales, storms, ships and earthquakes using an Arctic fibre optic cable.

Our oceans are critical to the health of our planet and its inhabitants. Increasing pressures on our marine environment are triggering an urgent need for continuous and comprehensive monitoring of the oceans and stressors, including anthropogenic activity. Current ocean observational systems are expensive and have limited temporal and spatial coverage. However, there exists a dense network of fibre-optic (FO) telecommunication cables, covering both deep ocean and coastal areas around the globe. FO cables have an untapped potential for advanced acoustic sensing that, with recent technological b

Microorganisms in desert rocks: the edge of life on Earth.

This article reviews current knowledge on microbial communities inhabiting endolithic habitats in the arid and hyper-arid regions of our planet. In these extremely dry environments, the most common survival strategy is to colonize the interiors of rocks. This habitat provides thermal buffering, physical stability, and protection against incident UV radiation, excessive photosynthetically active radiation, and freeze-thaw events. Above all, through water retention in the rocks' network of pores and fissures, moisture is made available. Some authors have argued that dry environments pose the mos

Status update of NASAs assessment of the biological contamination threat of crewed mars surface missions.

As we prepare for a future first mission to Mars with a human crew, the United States, under the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, has an obligation to protect against harmful contamination of the red planet and to protect the Earth from the potential harmful effects of material brought from Mars. In previous years NASA has partnered with the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR), the European Space Agency (ESA), the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and other space exploration organizations to conduct a series of workshops on identifying knowledge gaps for protecting Mars from Earth micro
